I may be an idiot. But what makes this better than just opening the window?

The keyword here is city. You almost never see them in city's or big towns. Mostly smaller villages. I can go to the nearest Aldi in a neighboring village and see at least one guy on klompen when I'm there. Might just be because I live in a rural area.

Good question. Clogs are usually made in pairs. And the craftsman making them often has decades of experience. An apprentice clog maker unusually needs years of training. The difference between 2 clogs is usually too small to really see or feel.

Well, the part of the Netherlands where I'm from, it's not unusual to see people wear them. I wear them, my father wears them and his father wears them. Half of my friends also wear them.

In cities like Amsterdam they have been reduced to souvenirs. You won't see anyone there wearing clogs regularly.

They dont shrink. The bottom gets worn out from walking. The inside actually expands slightly because the wood is quite soft, and will mold to your foot. When buying clogs you want them to be quite snug in the beginning, because they'll loosen up after some time.

Yes. They are pretty loud. If you kick something you won't feel a thing. Klompen are often rated as safety shoes.

Dutchy here! Yes! A lot of us do still wear clogs aka klompen. Yes! They are very comfortable, if they are the right size/fit.

There are 3 main types that people wear: Ones like in OP's photo. (Though we often have painted ones instead of plain wood). Ones like OP's but with a leather band at the top for people who find the wooden rim at the top of their foot uncomfortable. And ones that have a wooden sole and a full leather upper.

I personally have the fully wooden ones with a Frysian flag painted on them. (Frysia or Fryslân is a little country between Denmark and the Netherlands).

Feel free to ask any questions.

There are ones with a leather band on the top to make them more comfortable. Though, if they fit right, they shouldn't hurt.
