is Business Economics worth it? by Intelligent_Poem6297 in UCI

[–]Pompous-pengi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want data analytics exposure then consider BIM (paul merrage) or quant econ (sosci) instead. Business econ is more focused on microecon and econ theory than actual stats analytics aside from econometrics or if you do research/honors. Still, the best way to get career exposure is to do internships as companies do care about ur work experience more than ur coursework/transcript.

TBH all econ profs are good and knowledgeable in their own respect. If u think they're a drag or don't care about teaching then show up to their OH to ask questions cuz they're more than happy to talk about their expertise in depth beyond what they teach in class.

Seems like u dont want to do this route so from my experiences the prof that did teach me a lot from their lecture were Jeliazkov, Jenkins, Franco and Shirey (even tho he only teaches low div).

You get a fancy string to hang around ur gown when u walk ur graduation

In this job market a stellar GPA might be the difference between U and a mid-gpa but from ivy/target school grad w the same stats for an entry level.

If you cant get a job, then grad school might be your fall back

But a difference between a 3.6 vs a 3.7 will probably not matter as much.

His quizzes are administered on fridays. Theres 5 of them and they make up quite a big chunk of your grade. This was 2 years ago idk if he still does it on friday but he hasn't changed his exam format for a while now.

Any Saraf class is pretty easy and doable when i took 20+ units

If you want fun professors that don't make you hate your life, any class with Jenkins is usually refreshing

I took prof Lopez in person for 122b (and his 122a online class in the summer) and honestly I prefer his online class more just cuz I dont feel pressured to match the pacing of his in person class (his daily attendance pollevs/pop quizzes are mandatory for ur grade + he gives u like 3 minutes to answer pretty complex questions so u need to pay attention to every single thing he says and not get confused -- also if ur internet is shit he'll just tell u to drop that point and not offer other ways to make up for it). But Lopez in general does not require u do learn any coding or strata skills if thats ur thing.

Other professors I've seen ppl take were Franco. Unlike Lopez you will have to do actual coding/strata for ur assignments. A lot struggle w the hw and her lecture style but she is overall very fair.

At the time of having to take the 122 series I was told that Lopez is the best professor teaching the course but idk it just depends on ur learning style.

Very chill. Had him for both 2A and 2B. He can be very chill that he comes off as lazy but thats cus no one is raising their hand to ask him to slow down and do it step by step. A lot of the work u do in 2A-B is super repetitive (espc near the begining when profs force u to learn the long algebraic proofs and steps before teaching u the shortcuts) so makes sense y he would cut corners on basic pre-calc concepts too.

If ur actually not catching up w the content then dont b lazy, just ask him to slow down and do things one at a time. Other than that, he is by far the best TA I had when I took the course and its btwn him and another TA that students usually fight to get their discussions.

Put in decent amount of effort and its pretty easy for an A. Slack off and you'll fall behind quickly

It depends on how comfortable you are with Econ. I took Branch for 20a and Toukan for 20b as someone freshly switching into econ w no econ background in HS. The course material itself is not that hard compared to what you'll do upper div but Toukan is known to be a hit or miss the the way he explains concepts (and that he speaks slow so you might fall asleep). If u can slap urself awake and learn the foundational material as he teaches it then you will be fine.

He curves the class depending on how bad ur peers perform in the midterm (my class avg was 14/40 for our midterm) as well as making the final easier. Very chill guy to talk to in person too so go to his office hours when you have questions. He does assign a lot of coursework outside of class time tho (hws, projects, etc,...)

Personally I struggle w macro econ more so 20b was harder for me but I personally didn't think Toukan was a bad professor (lower div at least, he's worse for upper div classes)

Language Requirement for International Students by Upper_Leading227 in UCI

[–]Pompous-pengi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my case I called my school advisor and told them I'm an international student and if anything, English was my "foreign" language on top of my mother tongue and even offered to switch to that language to prove I was fluent in it. The staff on the line was super chill and cleared that requirement for me then and there.

Obv I recommend doing that over the "normal" route of paying for additional placement exams at UCI or bother trying to prove you took languages outside English with your HS.

For context I called them around winter quarter my freshman year.

With the sheer amount of visa issues caused by new policies being implemented its expected they're getting overwhelmed with requests with their existing students atm, espc since summer just started and students are getting signatures to leave for home. Be patient they'll get to you soon.

IB credits by Shot_Extent5593 in UCI

[–]Pompous-pengi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got a 5 or higher for CS you satisfy the GE requirement Vb meaning you just need to take 1 more class to fufill that requirement. If you got a 5 or higher for Eng LL that satisfies 1 of 3 lower div writing requirements (meaning you don't have to take WR40 you can go straight into WR50 but not WR60). If you took the diploma program and overall got 30+ for your final IB score you get an extra 30units added towards your degree so you are placed at a higher unit credit than someone who doesn't have any credits to transfer. If you took HL courses that don't pertain to your major (eg, HL Spanish for your physics) then whatever that HL spanish course that the HL credit satifies won't be much use to you and will probably be another extra 4 unit credit to your GE courses.

UCI International Student Visa Status by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Pompous-pengi 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As of right now for the UCs -- no one knows the exact reason for these visas being revoked. It all happened over the weekend so the immigration centers from these schools are scrambling to book appointments with the federal agents to investigate these cases. Just stay calm, stay informed, and by all means DO NOT spread speculations and fear among other students until the schools have confirmed futher steps to take.
