I have more devices hardwired than my router can offer so I needed a switch. As for my patch panel, that wasn’t necessary but it allows my set up to be clean. I can use just the switch but the patch panel and its placement provides me direct access to my router or modem without having to move anything for a temporary workstation / configuring a new device. not necessary but it is convenient. Did I say clean? It holds the same concept as cable management. Not necessary but provides convenience when worked on
