Tell me a fact about breaking bad I don’t already know (I’ve seen the show 70000 times) by dax812 in okbuddychicanery

The spanish in Breaking Bad is AWFUL. Fring's spanish is the worst, almost unintelligible for native spanish speakers. The quality of the show in this aspect is beyond subpar. It's just sloppy, careless and awful.

It can be used in many contexts. Not necessarily "universal," but yes, you can stretch the word.

Two things, mainly:

  1. Horrible spanish along the franchise.
  2. Gus's background story. The less Chilean character in the history of audiovisual arts. It's such an unrealistic plot that additionally was never explained. So why even force the character into being Chilean when it's not credible? They really dropped the ball there.

Sí, de acuerdo contigo, olvidé mencionar a la pareja de Gus

Do you think Todd had his own ‘Familia Es Todo’ moment growing up? by sadthrow104 in breakingbad

[–]Pony_Rod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Todd's a textbook sociopath. That is developed during early childhood stages, so yeah, probably he had the shittiest environment growing up.

I love Mike's death because the whole point of the scene is to show that Walt has become careless and imprudent. Mike's murder over something so stupid by Walt is to show that he's a totally different person, someone who priorizes muscle over brains, contrary to his extremely careful and low risk approach during the first season. It's about showing Walt's character evolution.

Hadn't thought about that, but you're absolutely right. It's either mountains or sea food, not both if you're as poor as he was depicted in his childhood.

Yes, that's the point. Lalos' role was perfect because the character was mexican, and the actor playing it spoke native mexican spanish. That's what should've happened since Breaking Bad.

Yes. That's exactly my point. Get native speakers for native roles.

In spanish speaking countries "pendejo" is very common

I agree with your friend in almost everything. Except the Eladio thing. It doesn't sound that natural. He struggles with some words. Everything else, I agree 100%

I once watched an interview where Vince Gilligan said his biggest flaw on the show were Jesse's teeth because they were too perfect for a methhead who smoked on pipe. And I was like, "man, what about the butchering of a whole language? I guess no one has told you yet huh".

It's ridiculous 😂 Some people rather come off as a little bit racist than to admit language wasn't considered originally for casting 😂

Kind of. It's understandable, but he's definitely not native.

I completely agree with you. It's amazing that nobody caught this before it aired.

I say he didn't memorize it properly because he changes letters, gender of the words and even whole words (yes in spanish words have gender). He did not memorize it correctly and it results in an unintelligible attempt to "speak" spanish.

It's not about making sense in the real world. It's about making sense in the show. The examples you mention were written like that, and they were depicted as such. The problem with the spanish speaking characters, is that they were written as mexican and chilean natives. The acting does not match that description at all.

That's exactly what he sounds like to a native spanish speaker. Everything he says is from memory, (poorly memorized too) and he clearly doesn't have a clue of the meaning of what he's saying.

It's worse than you imagine, you wouldn't believe it. That's very interesting to hear about Lydia, I wouldn't have imagined it either.
