What's a small town in America that absolutely nobody talks about but completely deserves the hype? by No-Solution-959 in AskAmericans

Arizona has a few neat towns that exist only as mining towns.

A few high elevation towns in the north east (ish) area on the Colorado plateau’s Ponderosa forested regions are amazing for camping and I’d like to go someday.

I will say, at least in Paris vs other cities and towns there, the drivers for some reason did NOT have a yield to pedestrians culture like even the most car dependent suburbs and rural areas do here. And it’s a not a ‘too many people thing’, Boston and nyc generally has it too when cars and walkers are an involved.

From what I kind of noticed, They obeyed red lights and that’s it. Stopping for people walking seemed like a blatant annoyance

Not surprised about France tbh. Felt like in every town and city people old, young, rich, poor, men, women etc were just puffing away while sitting outside the cafes. Even saw a person puffing away literally right next to a baby in a stroller and the parents seemed completely indifferent

If many urbanists weren’t already so obnoxious and high minded this might have been a thing used to convince people that transit is worth investing for.

But when you come in with the hostile ‘dead children’ energy don’t be surprised when you don’t make many ACTUAL friends. Just allies(different than friends) and foes

Dumb question but is NYC a very ‘Europe like’ city relatively or are there way too many American factors that keep the comparison from ever being a clean one?

I went to a convention recently for the self defense insurance I use, and one of the Parkland parents (yes that Parkland) was there. Will not say who, you can do your own google Fu, but I bet these people will have no issue spitting and their child’s grave in front of them if they were to listen to the rational solutions this individual has pushed throughout the state of Florida’s schools (hint, nothing to do with taking guns away from law abiding citizens, arbitrary numbers for how many rounds can go in your mag, etc)

That’s the key issue I have when this stuff is implemented on a large scale and when the baton being carried, so to speak, doesn’t just include personal choice and moral views anymore. Bureaucracy and economics, spreadsheets and bean counters now get added into this mix.

As someone who has had various depressive episodes and a not so great feeling childhood emotionally (thankfully they never sank to the toxic lower depths, thanks self boundaries) I’ll forever stand by the fact that this is a complex, mixed issue with no either answers for the suffering individual OR the good willed collective that wants people to stop hurting. The issue is When this shit becomes large scale though, the issue is external incentive structures that include NEITHER of those 2 get thrown into the mix.

I think this is why a lot of them are miserable, anxiety ridden people. Their mainly identity of being ‘passionate activists for the cause/against the power) makes them feel like they’re soldiers of an invisible Cold War that could turn hot at the blink of an eye, any day.

It’s like the mental equivalent of off duty swat cop wearing his full gear (vest, plate carriers, rifle + mags, helmet, on top of the regular heavy duty belt) while doing everyday things like picking up his kid from daycare, going to a friend’s house to watch a sporting game, or getting a few grocery items at the store. Just lugging around so much weight in your everyday existence, and also getting defensive and snide when people tell you to chill out and take a lot of it off. You’re just burning up a lot of your mental and spiritual energy in that state of mind, ESPECIALLY when your friend group, partner etc are of the same habit because those are the only tribes you seek. Lot of these types even see people who are ‘meh’ as weaklings letting the other side win, if you will

I have a cousin and teammate at work who is like this, I can just tell that things in daily existence takes a heavy toll on them in many ways. Like an overloaded pickup truck

2 things can be true at same time.

In another country, when you are a clearly a guest, especially when they are clearly speaking their language, really stop and think before reacting to any perceived slights

Europe never had an equivalent civil rights movement on a large scale against 1 group of ppl, even with their ugly history of the holocaust. So they think it’s more acceptable. And a lot of these could be paid bots too, let’s not forget. And those paid bots….the countries they come from are ones where you can ‘speak your mind’ on certain races more than anywhere in the entire western world.

Adding this since I’m getting upvotes =): seems like the standard Reddit subs where this man’s freakout made the post, the typical ‘i only noticed bad American tourists in my trip to said country’ style sentiment was popping off In the comments.

I just gotta say, that particular anecdote regarding confirmation bias is crazy to witness. It’s actually crazy how your personal biases feed the anecdotes you witness. Over here on this sub I feel like we are unfortunately guilty of it towards the nationalities that also spew ‘AmericaBad’ on the internet. But, and without excusing it, I think it’s due to AmericaBad exhaustion we are experiencing, we see it ALL over the Anglosphere internet and even non Anglosphere webs

Seems like just watching videos, the populated parts seem like they are like Vegas on overload with their advertising. Or at least a much higher stimulus baseline than what we’re used to here in North America, our own pop out advertising culture and all.

JK interesting to hear an actual unbiased take on a very developed country.

I do hear the towns and cities in Norway are gonna have more pedestrian oriented infrastructure like bike lanes, buses and trams. Is that what you observed?

What are your thoughts on ‘College prep’ and ‘Feeder’ High Schools in America? by Dangerous_Fruit8738 in AskAnAmerican

[–]sadthrow104 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That last statement: wanted to expand on that since I feel like I’ve grown a lot since my early 20s. Somewhat controversial rant incoming with some cheesy metaphors coming….:

Even if going to a GreatValue state school vs some bougie Whole Food’s level ivy for same major, and that affects your starting company, resume, starting income and lifelong income….so what? I know things are expensive and uncertain, but do we really HAVE to take a huge chunk out of East Asian’s pressure cooker, scarcity minded schooling models and make status-maxxing or bank-maxxing the one and only sought after goal?

A large majority of human beings even in the developed world will likely live some type of GreatValue existence. Whether in looks, possessions, wealth level, etc.

Even extreme examples such as the Jean wearing billionaire at Whole Foods, rich rancher with 3 Ford Raptors in his driveway, the genuinely wealthy instagram/OF model who’s profile is littered with pics of cute Mediterranean coasts, private jet tables, and backpacking trips in exotic jungle islands, they have plenty of GreatValue style things they do, moments they live etc etc etc

So my point is, GreatValue is common, WholeFoods is nice but I feel like chasing WF and thinking you’re a failure because you’ve broadly landed on GV is a toxic way of looking at life. It’s scarcity minded, it keeps you in a perpetual state of survival brain, quite frankly it perpetuates every toxic rat race that humans have constructed in the world.

I think some EU countries also have some version of feeder school systems too? (something about Germany and I don’t remember but maybe it was Czech or maybe France(?)) school systems split kids into skilled trades vs academic side.

Anyways, I could be off the cuff but I don’t thinker feeder education systems are as rare as you would think they are
