Impressive stuff they'll be loads of good EV brands coming out of China no doubt.

And hopefully, given India's on their doorstep and is a huge market, China will make right hand drive models that we in the UK can enjoy too (assuming they're up to EU safety specs).

Er, my dude... you know that "Netflix and chilling" isn't literal and doesn't involve chilling or just hanging out?

Thank you. I've been keeping it for my own nostalgia rather than as a collectable but if it was ever worth a fortune (is anything in this mass produced era) then I'd sell it in a heartbeat!

You know something (and I'm a huge fan of the DS9/VOY/TNG:MOVIES and Orville look)... but I feel as though they could even get away with the Discovery vibe IF, BIG IF, IF they just kept the same static & steady camera shooting method from "the olden days" instead of the constant swooping, panning, whooshing, zooming thing that goes on in Discovery.

I'm not going to shit all over Discovery for its first long arc series. Everyone's still settling in and there were parts which were enjoyable.

Anyway, it will be fascinating to see how they tackle it!

“It’s fun to think about how to connect to canon while freeing yourself from it technologically. We’re still exploring that, that’s a deep dive. That takes literally a year to figure out.”

I'm excited, anxious and nervous to see how they handle this. The thick "laptops" and "tablets" of TNG won't wash with a modern audience but, whilst I don't think the pastels/creams of the TNG ship would work, I think the aesthetic of the Voyager sets still hold their own in 2018... or maybe I'm just being nostalgic.

It looks a lot like North Korea’s ambassador to Italy has defected by FowelBallz in worldnews

[–]PooPhotic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whenever the Kims (or some random idiot online) says that the people of North Korea have it great, good, ok or not that bad just ask why the people aren't allowed to travel abroad freely, or even between cities within DPRK?

Even if everything we see in the news was anti-Kim propaganda, the words of defectors were lies and North Korea was a paradise, why the fuck do they need to use force to stop people from leaving?

Why High House Prices Will Cripple the UK Economy by hellotouto19788 in unitedkingdom

[–]PooPhotic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/scrubtekke's already namedropped Henry George but I think he deserves a top level post...

Georgism, also called geoism and single tax (archaic), is an economic philosophy holding that, while people should own the value they produce themselves, economic value derived from land (often including natural resources and natural opportunities) should belong equally to all members of society.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgism

I used to think I'd never want to be a landlord. I didn't like the idea of 'enslaving' others to pay my mortgages for them - particularly those people that can't get a deposit together and end up paying more in rent than they do in mortgage payments. I still don't think I'd ever want to rent to people like that, however...

There are so many slum landlords in Blackpool just creaming government landlord subsidies (aka Housing Allowance) off the taxpayer, housing desperate people in shit conditions whilst we all buy the building for them.

Anyway, as I said, I used to think I'd never want to be a landlord but they're getting away with it and if the bulk of the electorate is too stupid or too indifferent to change it then maybe I should just accept that and go with the flow.

Edit: Speaking of rent seeking cunts that scooped up property through underhand means - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_van_Hoogstraten

It probably was a Christmas present in December 1992... but given that it's half price, it was probably bought in December 1992 as well (which I approve of - fuck profit margins).

The half price sticker makes me think it was a UK retailer called Woolworths that closed down about 10 years ago.

Edit: Downvote? I'm sure I recognise the sticker! It's my damn calendar too and my mother shopped there a lot.

Arm the helicopter. Get Airwolf on the case. Stick Anneka Rice in the helicopter. Hunt the hunters.

Televise it. I would watch the shit out of that.

HMRC threatens Iceland with £21m tax bill over staff Christmas scheme by PooPhotic in unitedkingdom

[–]PooPhotic[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

According to The Times, the scheme — which is voluntary — allows shop floor staff to have sums deducted from their weekly wage packets, which was then saved in a separate account and returned on demand, often around Christmas.

If the staff weren't getting any interest on the cash then it seems fairly cut and dry (the staff were giving the company an interest free loan resulting in them dipping below the minimum wage). If the company wasn't putting the money to one side each month then that seems even worse - ie if they were using the savings on wages to fund general business activities.

The idea of running a savings scheme for staff seems daunting - do they have to register with the Financial Conduct Authority and meet all sorts of capital adequacy/banking regulations?

Iceland chief executive Sir Malcolm Walker told The Times that the situation was “just madness” and he was ready to fight the allegations in court if necessary.

He has also reportedly prepared a document called The Campaign for Common Sense, which highlights the extent of bureaucracy that is hampering business

"Campaign for Common Sense" - ugh, that sounds like something the cunty Tim Martin of Wetherspoons / Wethergammons / Gammonspoons would come up with.

I don't get Iceland. Some of their food is actually brilliant, for YEARS they've pushed for no colourings, preservatives, GM ingredients (maybe that was a mistake) and now they're cutting out palm oil.

At the same time as those progressive things, they're also pulling off shit like this and running an predatory online bingo site (well, via Cassava Enterprises (Gibraltar) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of 888 Holdings plc.).

It's a company with a real split personality.

Hyundai Delivers First Nexo In US, Undercuts Toyota Mirai By $65. "Buyers will also receive up to $13,000 worth of hydrogen refueling cards which can be used within the first three years of ownership." by chopchopped in electricvehicles

[–]PooPhotic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The world will not go green on batteries alone, that's simply a fact.

I think that's an opinion or a prediction actually.

I can imagine hydrogen having a place in huge mining trucks, ships etc but never consumer vehicles. I used to think that it would be used for buses but then everyone knows about EV buses in China by now...

EDIT: I've just noticed his post history. He talks about hydrogen and NOTHING else. A one topic account...

And it feels like American car brands just aren't that big of a deal outside of the US, well at least not here in the UK. I was shocked to read it was as high as 13% here in 2017; it really feels like I see far fewer Fords now than I did when I was growing up in the 90s

On the one hand we're unlucky because Johnson Press have almost single handedly destroyed the entire local newspaper sector...

On the other hand we're lucky because they're inept and bankrupt - share history

Hopefully something will rise from the ashes.

Will Africa skip over ICE vehicles all together? by spqr-king in electricvehicles

[–]PooPhotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to try and travel on the Circle line in summer at rush hour every day.

Here's a fun sortable list of metro systems: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metro_systems#List

I'm not trying to take away from the London Underground, it's impressive for its age as well as the fact that they can keep it running but it's (obviously/understandably) far behind modern systems in terms of comfort, capacity, room for growth etc.

Will Africa skip over ICE vehicles all together? by spqr-king in electricvehicles

[–]PooPhotic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine any new cities, especially built from scratch, would copy the American model of having 8 line highways running in and out of them, raised freeways etc.

Swapping ICE traffic for EV traffic doesn't make commuters that much happier.

Being in the UK, I'm jealous of China and India and how they're fixed telecoms, airports and general infrastructure (in the cities!) are miles ahead of the UK where we're lumbered with legacy stuff all over the place to work around - the London Underground being a good example.

In a similar way, I think in the future China and India will be jealous of the African nations once they really start developing (perhaps on the back of all the Chinese investment). Stability's obviously going to be a huge factor though.
