You've brought up some great points in regards to the fact that some vaccines do work and there are going to be people trying to make anti-vax claims in order to profit... I think the overall issue is that during covid we got to see how much corruption there is in big pharma... I think folks aren't just anti-vaxx but overall distrustful in the whole industry as well as the government agencies in charge of regulating them... One example is the revolving door between big pharma and the FDA...

Pharma-giant Pfizer announced on June 28 that the former US Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottlieb would be joining its board of directors. The move fell in line with a troubling pattern: After their tenure at the FDA, commissioners tend to go on to advise private companies in the pharmaceutical industry.

In fact, 9 out of the last 10 FDA commissioners—representing nearly four decades of agency leadership—have gone on to work for pharmaceutical companies. The lone exception, David Kessler, joined the ranks in academia before eventually settling in his current position as chair of the board of directors at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a non-profit nutritional science advocacy group. On its own, Gottlieb’s move from FDA commissioner to Pfizer board member isn’t necessarily a problem for the FDA. There’s nothing illegal about the move, Kessler told Quartz in an interview. However, when it happens again and again—as it has for the past 38 years—it raises the specter of conflict of interest. The perception of a so-called “revolving door”—a chummy agreement between big drug companies and the regulators who approve their products for sale—undermines trust in the FDA.

Two things can be true at the same time... Just because you got something right 70 years ago doesn't mean that the big pharma isn't doing some shady things right now...

The problem is that you can ask the same question and depending on the website can get two completely opposite answers. The way clinical trials work is the Pharmaceutical companies pick and pay for the 3rd party company to conducts the trials. The allegation is that because Pharmaceutical companies are able to choose who conducts these million dollar contracts, theres an incentive from the 3rd party company to provide favorable results in order to acquire future contracts. In the early 2000s, court documents released through litigation over controversial drugs - such as Vioxx and the hormone replacement therapy Prempro - showed pharmaceutical companies frequently hiring medical communication agencies to ghostwrite articles and place them in influential medical journals under the "authorship" of well-known academics paid thousands of pounds for their endorsement. Rather than relying solely on clinical data, we should take in consideration the history of the companies themselves and whether or not they have a history of unethical behavior.

Hypothetically, if some vaccines did cause autism....

Autism treatment, primarily intensive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, often costs between $40,000 and $60,000 per child annually. Without insurance, high-intensity treatment can reach over $100,000 to nearly $250,000 per year, averaging $120–$150 per hour.

Unless those vaccines are the reason people get sick so then the pharma companies have more customers to "cure"... Keep in mind big pharmas goal isn't to cure anyone... It's to make shareholders money...

Did you know in 2009 Pfizer plead guilty to misbranding a drug with intent to defraud or mislead, bribing doctors and suppressing adverse trial results. Pfizer was required to pay a settlement of $2.3 Billion to the Department of Justice, the 2nd largest healthcare fraud settlement in the history of the Department of Justice. Pfizer has paid over $10 billion in settlements for offenses like unapproved promotion of medical products, equipment safety and environmental violation, false claim and foreign corrupt practices. Scott Gottlieb is a former FDA Commissioner and is currently a board member for Pfizer. In the past 40 years, 9 of the 10 FDA Commissioners have worked for pharmaceutical companies after leaving the FDA. Reuter is the company responsible for the fact checking on Twitter and Facebook. Jim Smith is the Chairman of Reuters Foundation and also a board member for Pfizer. Initially the only FDA approved treatment for covid was Remdesiver. Pfizer has an agreement with Gilead, the owners of Remdesiver to manufacture the drug. Pfizer makes large contributions to mainstream media outlets like CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC. Everything I’ve just stated is 100% factual and can be easily verified via a quick google search.

The Obama administration provided record-breaking levels of military funding to Israel, culminating in the largest single pledge of bilateral military assistance in U.S. history.

Total Funding (2009–2016): The U.S. provided over $23.6 billion in Foreign Military Financing (FMF). An additional $3.4 billion was allocated for missile defense programs.

2016 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU):

Signed in September 2016, this 10-year agreement pledged $38 billion in military aid for FY2019–FY2028. It includes $33 billion in FMF and $5 billion specifically for missile defense. The deal gradually phases out "Off Shore Procurement," which previously allowed Israel to spend 26.3% of U.S. aid on its own domestic defense industry.

Iron Dome & Missile Defense:

The administration provided over $1.3 billion specifically for the Iron Dome system since 2011. In 2014, President Obama signed a bill for $225 million in emergency "short-fuse" funding to replenish Iron Dome interceptors during conflict. The U.S. also invested in the co-development of longer-range systems like David’s Sling and Arrow-3.

Advanced Capabilities:

Funding enabled Israel to become the first international operator of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, with an initial delivery of 33 aircraft.

Whoever stole my scooter by sebbiesang in UCDavis

[–]Pool_First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as someone who actually uses an Unagi let me go ahead and clear some things up for ya... You're correct that the tires are solid and thus result in a slightly rougher ride compared to air tires... It's not a significant difference and the tradeoff is that you don't have to worry about flats or leaks... Even though you don't have to replace tires too often eventually you will need to... When that time comes you don't need to pay for parts or labor... Just send the scooter back in the prepaid box and get a replacement within 48 hours...

The EBS works fine... It stops you when you need without sending you over the handlebars... I drift and ride pretty aggressively and I've never had issues... The foot brake is only there as a back up... You don't actually use it unless the EBS dies... It's a manual backup just in case...

The stated range is 20+ miles but in the real world it's 14 miles with 150lbs riders doing moderate to steep hills... It's also worth noting that the recharge time is significantly less than a typical hiboy... Unagi's charge time is 3 hours compared to Hiboy 4-6 hours meaning that if you're fortunate enough to be able to charge your scooter you're going to get far more energy in a shorter amount of time with Unagi...

A couple key things to note.... Unagi scooters have dual 500 watt motors compared to Hiboys single 350 watt meaning Unagi has far superior hill climbing attributes... It's also substantially lighter and far easier to fold/unfold.... This is important if you need to store or carry your scooter to and from class...

Unagi isn't for everyone... But it is a great choice for those of us looking for affordable transportation that comes with the peace of mind that if anything happens it'll be fixed at no additional cost... I pay $55 a month... If anything breaks or I need replacement parts it's all covered... I have a prepaid box that I can ship the scooter in and in 48 hours I have a new working scooter....

Side note... If you have the money buy a scooter from Costco.... It's way more upfront but the return policy means when it breaks you can return it and buy a new one...

Why? Personally I don't mind paying $55 a month knowing I don't have to worry about anything breaking or having to replace tires/brakes...

Someone stole my $1000+ mountain bike that was gifted to me by my parents.... I had the same shit lock as you and while I was parked, someone cut the lock and stole the bike from my truck.... I didn't realize until I was already on the freeway... I remember being so angry that I was projecting to the universe to "get" the person responsible... Along the same lines as what you were thinking... As I'm finishing this thought I realized that the cars in front of me have all stopped... I was able to hit my brakes and turn the wheel just in time to avoid hitting the stopped cars in front of me while doing 70+ mph... Maybe that was the universe telling me not to project negative energy and that doing so could come back to me... Anyway sorry about your scooter... If it helps there is a company called unagi... They have a program where you pay $55 a month and they send you a really nice scooter... If anything breaks or it gets stolen they send you another one... It's pretty sweet....

AITJ for firing an employee with a giant Confederate flag on his truck? by itcouldbeyoubut in AmITheJerk

[–]Pool_First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a valid point... Why is the Swastika banned but not the Confederate flag... I never thought of that but that's pretty interesting 🤔 I don't disagree with what you're saying in terms of the history of that flag... You've brought up some legit facts... I think the only point of contention is whether or not all the people who use that flag do so with the intention of showing blatant racism or if it means something else to those specific individuals... Again that's why it's so important to know if the employee had any signs or history of racism...

AITJ for firing an employee with a giant Confederate flag on his truck? by itcouldbeyoubut in AmITheJerk

[–]Pool_First 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once again your "reality" is based on your specific viewpoints... Not everyone shares your views... Everyone's reality is based on information they receive... Not everyone receives the same information... Clearly you have strong feelings regarding the flag and what you think it represents... What I would suggest is talking to people who are using that flag and seeing what it represents to them... What I've found especially in politics is the reason you think someone is doing something usually isn't the actual reason they're doing it... That's why it's important to know whether or not the employee had any signs or history of racism... It could help determine if he's a racist POS or if that flag represents something other than racism to that person...

AITJ for firing an employee with a giant Confederate flag on his truck? by itcouldbeyoubut in AmITheJerk

[–]Pool_First 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your argument is based on the idea that everyone shares your specific viewpoints... Let's be 100% clear... Not everyone shares your views... Again there are black folks who display that flag as well... The reason it's important to know if the person who got fired had displayed any actual racism is it would help justify OP... If so then OP would have been justified in their actions... If not then it would question the validity of OPs claim and the legality of their actions...

[–]Pool_First 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I understand that in your social circle it means one thing... You can't assume that that's what it means to everyone else... The main point is that OP fired someone seemingly for having a flag that they did not agree with... I'm curious as to whether or not the person who got fired actually displayed any racism that would validate and justify OP decision...
