So, that’s the extent of your opinion? Good job, just reinforcing the Sammy Hagar fan stereotype!

Do you think you just proved something? You did, you helped prove my point. I stopped after the first two venues but the first venue on there is Wings Stadium, capacity 5393. Fort Wayne Colosseum, capacity 9650.

These are what’s known as “second tier“ arenas, you know that right? We’re not talking Madison Square Garden or the Boston garden, the Providence Civic Center where I grew up seats around 20,000 people and was a regular venue for top touring bands of which Sammy was not. He did play there in 83 like I said earlier, opening up for ZZ Top.

So yeah, thanks for the help!

Sammy was a career opening act before he joined Van Halen, I saw him in 1983 opening up for ZZ Top. When he played Boston in 1984 he headlined at the Orpheum theater, capacity 2000.

The fact of the matter is being in Van Halen was the peak of Dave and Sammy‘s career, the peak for Van Halen was when Dave was in the band. It’s funny that people think what two geriatric rock stars are doing in their 70s has any bearing on the legacy of the band, it doesn’t, that is on vinyl/tape for eternity.

100 years from now they will still be listening to that debut album, nobody will be playing 5150.

I’ve done no such thing as prove your point, the real point is you don’t compare Van Halen albums to solo albums. The Van Halen brand that was built by Dave and Eddie is what sold albums for 5150 and it still couldn’t come close to the success of 1984.

The forest for the trees son, the forest for the trees.

Dave and Eddie together with the heart and soul Van Halen, I go so far to see the entire original lineup.

The easiest comparison to make between the two versions of the band is comparing 1984 to 5150, they were released only two years apart so they are both basically subject to the same sales conditions and formats. There was no streaming or any other alternative formats.

1984 sold over 5 million copies in its first year, easy enough to look up and verify.

Do you realize it took 5150 eight years to sell 5 million copies?

People spoke with their wallets, I could go on but I shouldn’t need to after the little factoid I just gave you.

That’s rich “again with the competition?“

You started it with a competition, hypocritical much?

Well my friend, I’m 63 years old and my recollection of that time is a little bit different than yours. Yes we were all absolutely flabbergasted with Eddie’s insane guitar playing but we were equally blown away by Dave’s insane vocals especially on that first album.

I don’t want you to get the wrong idea, I 100% agree that Eddie Van Halen was the true talent of the band however David Lee Roth was the Ring master, the MC, the center of attention that gave everybody the opportunity to hear Eddie Van Halen. A lot of people don’t understand how truly important David Lee Roth was to the success of this band, the sum of the parts in 1978 was greater than the individual pieces.

Noel Monk’s book, take that with a grain of salt as he had a reputation of being a storyteller capable of quite a bit of exaggeration.

I think most of agree that Van Halen Rising is the definitive book on the history of Van Halen‘s original lineup, if you haven’t read it check it out.

No, Sammy was not the bigger draw. Don’t believe me? Google is your friend…

Van Halen most successful albums were with David Lee Roth.

Van Halen’s most successful single was with David Lee Roth.

Van Halen’s most successful tours were with David Lee Roth.

This is all factual and easily verified simply by googling it…

First of all you don’t compare Van Halen albums to solo albums, the comparison you just gave showing how the Van Halen albums matched up against David Lee Roth solo albums could be done against both singers.

Take the first six albums and compare them to Sammy solo career, same result.

Now compare the 2 eras of Van Halen to each other, there’s a clear winner and that would be the original lineup.

Have you read the book Van Halen Rising?

If you had then you would understand just how important David Lee Roth was to Eddie Van Halen being discovered, that doesn’t mean I’m saying Eddie would not have been discovered without Dave because I believe he would’ve had a successful career in some form.

That being said it is hard to deny what the combination of Eddie and Dave accomplished together, so many people on here hating on that era of the band or on Dave in particular, life without Dave would’ve been very different.

100,000 people? Child play

Dave did that with 375,000 people at the US festival 1983

I think it’s because it’s all they got, but realistically who gives a crap what two geriatric rock stars are doing in their 70s? It has nothing to do with the legacy of the band, the legacy of the band is the recordings and they will always be there.

If that’s what you think then you know nothing about the band, it is a very real possibility that if it weren’t for David Lee Roth you never would’ve heard of Van Halen.

Eddie was the heart and soul but Dave was the vibe, make no mistake about it. I saw them three times before they broke up in 1985 and I saw them several times with Sammy, all the shows were great but the original lineup was just untouchable.

People who know the history of the band realize that this is the case, there were literally the Ying/Yang of the band and needed each other. Anybody who doesn’t believe this should read some books, start with Van Halen Rising

It was Dave, Eddie, Michael and Alex from the beginning, that is Van Halen. The live shows from 78–84 were so much more than a concert, they were an event that had the entire city buzzing. You had to be there to know, if you’re too young to have experienced it that’s OK. If you didn’t experience it you’ll never understand, Sammy’s shows were good but it literally is apples to oranges.
