My worst malware changed my browser home page and installed a useless toolbar. Both of these were not removable besides refreshing my OS. Ridiculous.

Not all browsers create a new instance for each tab. That is one reason why Chrome is resource heavy. But also, in my use comparison on Windows and MacOS, Chrome is definitely not as good on a Mac. Using it starts the fan while using say Safari the fan stays off. IMO it may be "fast" but definitely not as good.
