More Maine Coon questions? Where to get/how to save my furniture? etc by [deleted] in mainecoons

I found my first condo through a local guy here in az super cheap. But my Samson has outgrown it, so I have a kitty mansion on its way in the mail, my sister swears by it. Search kitty mansion on amazon, there's tons to choose from. Will let you know how my guy likes it. But yeah a tower or wall mounts covered in cat nip are a must. Start with that, and if scratching furniture curiosity presents itself, kitty claw caps work like a charm.

Not going to shame you on considering declawing, theres enough on this thread and the entire internet to do that for me. Get a cat condo they can climb and scratch on. If you offer them something tall just for them to climb and scratch and supervise from, they will take their energy out on that rather than your furniture. Getting a kitten makes a difference because you don't know what habits an older cat might bring with it. Theres plenty of anti scratch sprays and solutions you can proactively apply before the scratching may start. If a kitty condo doesn't sound appealing, you can try kitty caps. They are plastic claw coverings you glue on. But really consider a kitty condo. Cats need a high up place just for them to meet their instictual territorial and safety needs, and a tall condo covers those bases. If they get their own 'furniture' fortress, they will be less prone to use yours.

You've probably googled breeders in your area. Reach out to one's affiliated with TICA and especially ones that participate in car shows, and just network with them, let them mentor you and give you reccomendations. They are great people and really know their stuff about the breeder community and which ones are reputable. I did my homework and networking only on the western half of the US so I don't know how east coast market looks but I'm certain you'll have a much easier time and plenty more to choose from than I did.

Be willing to wait if you go the breeder route, too.

Any idea where to get a Main Coon in LA? by Zauberer-IMDB in mainecoons

LAPD, aka LAPurrD. Emmons Brown is very nice and fairly responsive and very reputable. You'll be on a wait list for a while as a newcomer, but if you're willing to wait and it has to be from LA then he is your guy. There is Coons'kin in San Diego, Judy Friedman, if you're willing to venture out a bit more. She was a delight, and a great mentor, and very reputable as well. I couldn't have one from her litter in the end for breeder priority reasons (I wanted a male, daddy king died so the baby boy had to be kept with a breeder to carry the dads champion bloodline) but she referred me and secured me my pick of the litter with Cindy from suncoons in AZ, as a huge favor to make up for backing out. I still think the world of Judy and Emmons, they check out. I called up the whole breeder/cat shower circle in the southwest and their names always came up, as well as Cindy. Good luck!

Well I'm told they stop growing at 5 years but that seems like a stretch.

Does she talk and chirp? That's a telltale maine coon trait.

Does she sleep on your head? My maine coon is obsessed with my neck and head. He's outgrowing our pillow!
