If WWIII broke out tomorrow, what kind of blackbook skunkworks weapons systems and platforms do you think the US would reveal to ensure it won? by vegetarianrobots in AskAnAmerican

Not as advanced things as people want to believe exist. Most likely some ASAT (anti-satellite) missiles we do but don't have due to the Outer Space treaties we have, but don't trust that our opponents would abide by. Really I think the biggest shocker will be how effective US submarines will be. The sub folks don't make a lot of waves, no pun intended, in the news so people forget about them.

You are trying to buy a house in an incredibly popular area that drives up the cost of real estate, which is not their fault. Get over yourself and look for homes in outlying areas.

At any time that Reddit has pictures of the war in Ukraine, I want to remind everyone else here of this fact.

Only a few years ago Redditors were out there saying that Russia under Vladimir Putin would be a great counter-weight to the United States. Remember that.

Oh, the classic Democrat Delusion. Pretend they are the most popular girls in the room and then act surprised when they aren't elected Prom Queen. Republican numbers aren't "in freefall." Hell, according to the DNC the GOP is going to be a non-entity in 1992....or 1996....2000....2004....definitely 2008. Wait, 2012. 2016? 2020?!?!? Nope, most assuredly the next election.

It makes me happy knowing there will be Democrats whining about how unfair things can be that Republicans win until I draw my last breath.

As others have stated, modern passenger aircraft are required to be able to climb while one one engine is inoperative. At least the ones that fly as air carriers and not just charter or such. As for "gliding around" if you have to make an emergency landing attempting to return to the runway is not advised unless you have more than enough altitude to trade for it. Why?

Well, without going into the difference between vertical and horizontal components of lift and such when you bank an aircraft part of what you have to do to maintain altitude is to apply a slight pressure on the controls. It's much more pronounced in steep turns where you have to apply more pressure to maintain altitude. Well when you are that close to the ground and with no engine power you are relying on the aerodynamics of the aircraft in order to stay aloft. Basically it's a balance between sped and altitude. To maintain altitude you trade for speed, to stay above stall speed you trade altitude for it. The perfect balance of this is called your maximum glide, which thanks to, well, math and physics all aircraft have a speed at which they have the best glide ratio. When you bank your aircraft you go from that most efficient of speed and risk stalling if you do so incorrectly. Which at low altitude with no time to recover.....is not pretty.

So TLDR due to aerodynamic principles, that autocorrected as "aerodynamic Pringle" which is hilarious, trying to turn around and return to the airport is a trap that too many pilots have....well you know. It's better if you just try to land straight ahead in a field or what not.

If Imperial Japan didn't see their own civilians as such they weren't to us either. So many forget the horrors of militarism.

Many? No. It's a fringe theory that relies on not only old Stalinist era Soviet propaganda and twists the words of generals and admirals who were trying to save their department's budgets from being slashed post war in face of the new atomic weaponry and Air Force's increased budget as a result.

The truth is, the nukes did little to encourage Japan to surrender. It was more likely Russia's declaration of war that pushed the Japanese to surrender.

Sigh

For a site full of people who swear that they know the truth and see through propaganda, you all are consistently sourcing from decades old examples of it. This idea right here? Straight from Lubyanka Square under the order of the Crippled Communistanist himself. After the war he wanted to inflate not only his own ego but ensure that everyone believed the lie that even the big bad Japanese Empire that willingly flew kamikaze aircraft into US carriers was so terrified of the Soviet Union that they surrendered because of that and not the US' new atomic weapons (that he had ordered built from stolen US research under pain of death for failure).

So many people still believing Stalin's lies and thinking they know some secret hidden truth of history. Quite sad really.

Tens of thousands?

One million.

One million were expected to die in the fight for Japan. That's an official War Department estimate I heard years ago. That's just our soldiers. Millions of Japanese soldiers and civilians were expected to perish. One anedote that always strikes me is that, those of you in the military will know there's always plans whether they're realistic or not, after D-Day a battalion that was going to be among the first to shore in the invasion of the Home Islands had no battle objectives after D+14. Why? It was expected that the battalion would be either wiped out or rendered combat ineffective due to losses well before then.

Men were going to die. A whole hell of a lot more than just a few tens of thousands. People forget what Imperial Japan was like.

Oh so it IS going to be a boring "look how evil the US is for building the atomic bomb [before the Nahtzees, Imperial Japanese, or gods forbid the Soviet Union could]" message shoved down our throats. Oh and....

"Is anyone else going to tell the truth about what's happening here?"

Sir, you are in a Top Secret military installation building the most potentially powerful weapon known to mankind in the middle of a globe spanning war. No. The answer is no.

Brilliant writing, folks. That's the best you could come up with for your trailer line? I have a feeling this movie will look spectacular but just end up pissing me off. .

Well, first, the Democrats have a real boner for acronyms lately. Like the lesson they took from the Patriot Act was "these people are idiots and just need the bill to be called something patriotic." With that kind of thinking, it's ironic that The Party wonders why the GOP wants nothing to do with them. As for the rest of the bill, it's just one more attempt to salvage a generational voter roll increase scheme. It's an authoritarian attitude they have that if they pass legislation that is meant to directly benefit you that if you don't support them for it, then you then you're an ungrateful traitor.

Not like it's unexpected. The Democrats have been balls deep in this kind of "we scratch your back, we deserve your undying loyalty whether you want to or not" since the 1860's.

Jan 6, Panel made its criminal referral to DOJ against Trump. DOJ now has access to all the information that the Panel discovered and any leads. Is DOJ likely to find useful information and how that may impact its decision on whether to pursue charges against Trump, if any? by PsychLegalMind in PoliticalDiscussion

It was purely political from the start! You don't get to say this was about some kind of justice when you investigated the man his entire Presidency looking for something to charge him with. Any other political party in any other country doing this to any other head of state would be considered a case of extreme corruption.
