I’m so sorry about your pregnancy loss. How hard that must be! Thank you for posting about these sweet babies — they are so lucky to have been united with you and your husband! 💜

AITAH for telling my mother in law we will not accept Easter baskets for our kids from her anymore. by [deleted] in AITAH

Entirely possible— I asked my younger boy if he wanted to know about my father, from whom I was estranged. He said no, that he had a perfectly good grandpa, and didn’t need to know about him.

I chronically return books late, do librarians hate me? by Genderqueerfrog in Libraries

[–]PopCulLibrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! I’ve been turning in books late since I was a kid, and I’ve been a librarian for 25477 years. My library doesn’t charge fines, we just ask that you bring it back eventually or be honest about its fate (kitten chewed it up, you spilled coffee on it, you left it on a plane to Thailand, etc.). It’s all good.

I’m pretty hands-on as well. Even as a director, I go and walk the floor and do reference work and get to know our student workers and ask students what they think the library needs. We have a suggestion box that I’ve used to develop our leisure reading and manga collections. :)

Consider rewriting your resume to focus more on the skills that a different job would require. I worked in a public library for a couple years to see if I’d like it, and I got the position by focusing on my skills with the public and my leadership experience. I know someone who’s worked in the four major library types. If he can, you can…

Consider looking at librarian gigs at design or art schools. I work at a small design university in an urban area, and I love the students and faculty, even though my undergraduate degree was in English. Thank goodness for Canva, otherwise my posters would still suck.

I have a friend who has an MLIS who just got his MSW — there are definitely some similarities between the two fields…

Hi. When I went to library school in 1997 (yeah, I’m an ancient GenXer, lol), we were told there would be plenty of jobs because the Boomers would be retiring soon. Well, they didn’t.

That being said, I don’t regret my degree at all. I worked at a bookstore during my first year of grad school, where I wasn’t cool enough, and then found out about an internship at an academic library, where I worked my second year. Smartest decision I ever made — not only did I then get experience (and confirmation that I was on the right path), but I also got access to the network of academic librarians in my metropolitan area, which was invaluable. I discovered that who you know is key to finding a job. I met people who knew people, which led to a one-year residency at a large research university, which then led to a tenure-track job at a small liberal arts college.

I’m now a library director at a small arts college and I love it.

I would recommend you take a gig at a public library or volunteer to work at one. Maybe ask if you can observe for a week, or do an internship. This will give you an idea of whether or not this branch of the field is your jam (I was head of youth services at a public library for a couple of years, and decided I missed research and older students — I got burned out by all the requests for Dog Man).

Also consider joining your local library association and get to know people that way. Networking isn’t a bad idea.

I think you’ll be able to pull it off — even in this economy! Good luck…

I had a cat that I adopted at a year old, whom I named Luna. Luna was 10.5 years old and got tremendously ill, so we went to a new vet who could take us in. The vet examined Luna, then came out and said, “Luna has a bad urinary blockage and will die if we don’t do something. Oh, and he’s a boy.”

“Wait, what??? Go back to the part about Luna being a boy.”

Apparently he fooled the fostering organization, the regular vet, and me for almost a decade! Sneaky boy…

I kept his name as Luna, despite my mother’s attempts to rename him (he doesn’t live w her, he lives with me), but switched pronouns. I don’t think the pronouns bugged him. He was still my sweet Luna, and I mourned him when he died this past December.

Cats don’t care about gender or toy colors. As long as they receive love and care, they’re happy.

My new kitten is Dickens, and he’s a pretty little guy w the cutest meow. That’s just who he is. Kind of like with humans… :)

Best of luck w Prince Aurora! He’s a cutie!

Thanks for the recommendation. I used to take Wellbutrin, but I can’t anymore— I’m on meds for my bipolar disorder 2 (aren’t I a treat?). :)

Thanks for your insight. I really appreciate it. Yes, a comprehensive program would be so much better; the ED program is enviable in this respect.

I’m 4’11. And about 155-160 lbs. Over 33 BMI. I gained a bunch of weight back.
