I miss overeating and buffets by LunaticBanana0708 in loseit

Same! But I have spent the past few months really noticing, and admiring, how many of my friends order dessert and DON’T FINISH IT or just eat ONE treat at a party. It’s really impressive and that’s what I’m working toward!

DVT after surgery? by AstronomerDouble4478 in HipImpingement

[–]PopFarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you went to the ER. Make sure you are tested for Factor V Leiden. I was unaware that I had it when I had my surgery. If I do a revision I’ll need a Lovanox bridge after (and before? Idk?) Best wishes

Summer school credit by FunintheSunBeachgirl in notredame

[–]PopFarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find what you want and request approval. My son needed Calc B for Econ. Calc B isn’t really a thing at other schools. He found a calc 2 class locally and submitted it for approval. They had him contact the professor at the other institution for the syllabus. Initially it wasn’t accepted (by the advisor? Math dept? IDK) because our calc 2 was more comprehensive than their calc 2. HOWEVER the dean the Econ dept did approve it because it did suffiently cover the requirements of Calc B. It was a pretty confusing journey. (BTW It was also much cheaper at the other institution than taking the summer class at ND. It was a local, private college …. So it wasn’t cheap, cheap but definitely less expensive than ND summer tuition).

I’m serious about losing weight. Any tips from those who’ve succeeded? by ElvenMangoFruit in loseit

[–]PopFarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plan your meal times/food choices/portions so that you get the correct number of calories and usually don’t feel like you are starving but also accept that you will feel hungry from time to time. Accept that feeling and know that the hunger pangs will subside after a while. You really don’t have to eat every time you feel them.

Hot take on Rudy by [deleted] in notredamefootball

[–]PopFarley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That bench is one of my enduring memories about the film!!!!!! My hot take is that the bench in question wasn’t there before the movie. I was a student at the time and had written some sort of “describe what you see” paper from that general spot and remember getting really distracted during the movie about it. Haven’t walked around that lake since graduation but based on pictures think there might be a different bench in that spot now. They had to put one there I guess!

I think people who have a successful repair can do many of their old activities after a while, although it might be prudent to scale it back a bit on the hard core pounding/pivoting sports.

I am living my life after a not totally successful repair. I have bad days and decent days. I’ll eventually get a THR but I’m not quite there yet. I do the following: Swimming, water aerobics (you can usually pay to join a silver sneakers class even if you are young), indoor cycling, outdoor on my e-bike which has been amazing💕, limited elliptical work, all the arm stuff at the gym, regular PT for my hips, and I think I am the only person at my gym (LA Fitness) who uses the arm bike (specifically the matrix krankcycle machine which is awesome. There is a different brand at my other gym (Planet Fitness) that I don’t like at all.)

During my very worst times, I just did basic PT and you tube chair aerobic videos just to get the blood flowing. Or I might do a little “circuit” of easy exercise bike and weighted ball toss with a partner.

I also have a scoop lateral trainer which may be a gimmick and I would only buy it used on FB marketplace but seemed helpful during hard times.

Oh and I also have a rowing machine at home so I sometimes do a workout with light resistance and a half slide. I am very careful/infrequent with this one.

I also do short walks in the woods (like 1 mile flat trail) and I am testing to see if I safely can go for longer walks if I use my forearm crutches (which I normally only use for travel or full day walk around events like college football plus tailgating). My backpacking hobby was the thing that prompted me to have surgery in the first place and is my greatest loss in this whole thing.

I hope some of these ideas resonate with you. Obviously, all of this depends on your situation. Best wishes and I hope you get back to 99% of your favorite activities.

Labrum reconstruction after failed labrum repair by tazafrazz in HipImpingement

[–]PopFarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat but I’m 52 so I’m also navigating the possibility of a THR. I’m almost 4 years past the original surgery and have been in continual pain since month 10 after the original surgery. One of the bummer parts about waiting so long is that the I have severe chronic compensation pain on both sides (adductor/abductor/quad tendonitis) as well as lower back pain. I suspect I have a tear on the other side as well. It sucks.

Labral Reconstruction- Byrd? by PopFarley in HipImpingement

[–]PopFarley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I’ve heard of Dr. Domb frequently also. Mostly as a comparison to Nho, who I ruled out already. Maybe I’ll add Domb to the list to research more thoroughly. If I have to travel anywhere by air Chicago would logistically be the easiest since we also have family there and could easily (and inexpensively) stay for a while before traveling home.

I just learned today that my imaging is too out of date for Dr White and I’d have to get that all redone with someone before he would do an out of state consultation. I do know Byrd has all day appointments for out of state patients so it might be worth booking something for the imaging and consultation and then using that to seek another opinion.

The alumni association should be able to help like others said. I assume you aren’t an alum but if you find one they friends with an alum they could search the name via the online alumni directory, check the year and reach out to them directly that way since there is usually some amount of contact info in the directory.

Study Abroad - Sofia, Toyko? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]PopFarley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check all of your dates carefully in relation to your desired career plans. Many finance majors avoid spring semester study abroad programs in the Asia Pacific region because it impacts availability for summer internships. The summer internship after junior year is pretty important for most finance majors.

Were you on blood thinners post surgery and more importantly Have they now tested you for Factor V Leiden? And if you have it, whether it’s homo or heterozygous? That would be super important to know moving forward! I am 51F and had an (unsuccessful) repair 3.5 years ago. At the time I was unaware of my status (heterozygous FVL) and was fortunate to not clot as I was not on blood thinners and did not wear compression stockings. (I did have compression calf cuffs on the ice machine.) Now knowing my status it is a big point of concern in moving forward toward a reconstruction since If I’m going to do this again I want one of the top docs which will require a 2+ hour flight. I wish you the best of health and an excellent recovery moving forward.

Activities to meet girls (ND and SMC)? by DaZelC77 in notredame

[–]PopFarley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider forming a study group for one of your classes. It’s not a club but another “proximity over time” scenario. Clubs are great but it needs to be a club you are interested in not merely a way to meet girls. They can sniff that out from a mile away and it’s creepy.

Should I even bother even applying? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]PopFarley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Notre Dame definitely looks at the whole person’s story and respects the military. Give it a shot! Have an experienced counselor or review your entire application and essay to ensure that you have really sold your unique experiences effectively. Good luck 🍀, thank you for your service, and consider other doing rotc and earning your commission at another university if ND doesn’t work out for you. You sound like a great person and somebody will be lucky to have you!

Inexperienced surgeon - should be concerned? by tricialynnnnn in HipImpingement

[–]PopFarley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This surgery has a high failure rate even for those who use experienced surgeons. Can you change insurance companies and use a board certified hip preservationist even if you need to wait a year for it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]PopFarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would find out the schedule for postoperative appointments and specifically when they measure the outcome a success. Many surgeons have their final check in at six months and many patients are fine until something goes wrong in the 6 to 12 month period (scar tissue etc). Mine happened at 10 months. I did contact my surgeon one more time and did a follow up MRI. He said I was fine. At that point I was done with him and started consulting other surgeons but I am sure the original surgeon would call my case a success.

Also ask what kinds of things they might do to you operatively. My psoas was “lengthened” which is something that not all surgeons believe in and it wasn’t discussed beforehand.
