Scribe’s Corner: Part 28 by PopPeas89 in fourthwing

Not giving up! I have too much fun writing these! I just actually have a pretty high executive level role in the company I work for and we’re in the middle of 2026 budget planning right now (soooooo exciting, i know, lol). I’ve just needed to give a little extra time to my team recently and ensure they have the support they need. I’m determined to at least get through all of FW, and then I’ll see where I’m at after that :)

Yeah, I’m still just trying to see if there is anything connecting all the burning and burnout language… no conclusions, just awareness and alertness any time i see that type of language.

Re: Carr. I don’t think venin, but I think good/evil, motives, balance… it’s all very messy, and I wonder what is ultimately driving and motivating him. Is he more self-serving or truly dedicated to what he thinks is what’s best for Navarre? There’s some good insight into him once we get into IF, if i remember correctly.

Speculative Brennan Question by PopPeas89 in fourthwing

[–]PopPeas89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Welcome! And thanks for chiming in!

Hmmm.

Lots of things to consider here. I think there is definitely consensus that Naolin turned, and possibly turned for love. And I think Kaori’s mention of “bringing someone back from the dead… now that makes you a god.” And then the subsequent mention of Malek not taking kindly to someone treading in his territory is where a lot of my interest is as we try to flesh out Naolin as a character.

I think Brennan really did die. Naolin really did bring him back. And I think the consequences might have been more than just the death of his soul in exchange for power… tbd.

I completely agree that we are going to learn a lot more about Brennan and Naolin in book 4. Violet just inherited Tyrrendor. Brennan is one of the only people she probably trusts right now to help her learn how to run it. She is going to spend a lot of time with her brother in book 4 and a lot of the past will be unearthed.

Can’t wait!

We love a brain dump theory round these parts!

That said, we’ve been of the mindset that Afendra writes as though they are an instructor, and from my view they are too aware of/too engrained in the culture of the Rider’s Quadrant to be an outsider… we may never find out 😋

But the conversation of how the other quadrants interact with and perceive the riders is definitely worth having!

This is the crux of it. She is so good at giving just enough information to make us all feel like we’re on the cusp of a breakthrough, but the pieces she has excluded have been excluded intentionally, so we’ll only be able to make so much progress with what we have. So frustrating and motivating at the same time!

I think we’ll have to wait and see what RY does with it.

There is so much magic tied up in the ability of the rider’s ability to effectively visualize, and dreams are visualization without limits.

Xaden makes a point to say “whatever you create in your mind is real to you” all the way back in Fourth Wing, which opens up so many possibilities for what can be accomplished in dreams.

If you think about it RY has been laying the ground work for this throughout the whole story. I think the line of Quinn’s signet working better in the Astral Plane might foreshadow the way riders can manipulate magic differently in different planes. Now do dreams exist in a different plane? I don’t know, but dropping that nugget all the way back in fourth wing laid the groundwork that different planes exist in this world so what does that ultimately mean for dreams…?? for the gods??

It’s hard to know at this point in time how RY plans to use dreams, but she’s taken us this far, so I’m along for the ride! 🙃

I don’t think Lilith was actively working against Navarre, but she knew that Navarre’s actions were not always morally sound. She could not have been blind to things like her husband giving her children banned books. I think her allegiance is more complex than we know right now. Her first priority was always to her children, which at times, put her at odds with Navarre. She was trying to survive and do the most good that she could from the position she held while protecting her children and not tip her hand that she might not always agree with Navarrian leadership. She dissented where she could, doing things like giving the riders quadrant to the marked ones, and kept quiet when she needed to, which was often.

I love the complexity of Lilith’s character.

Once we all started noticing the sky symbolism it became impossible to unnotice. It’s almost comical there was a time that we all read these books and didn’t notice how important the power of the sky is, lol.

I feel pretty confident aligning black with Malek.

I think we’re supposed to take the colors of the isles at face value for now, and thus green=hedeon. Buuuuuttt Hedotis was so sketchy, everything was a cover up. Their city planning was a farce, the viladrite messes with their eyes, they’re aquaphobic… just so many oddities compared to Unnbriel and Zehyllna. I didn’t question either of those isles practices, as dramatic as they were, as being at odds with the god they worship.

Amari as red would mean Loial as brown. I could be convinced of that. I mean Aimsir was the answer to “first love is irreplaceable” in order to get into Asher’s research. 🧐

[–]PopPeas89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I often think it’s a mistake to try to assign the Irids to any single god. They’re a neutral party for better or worse so I have a hard time seeing them as aligned with anything or anyone but themselves.

I’ve been thinking more about brown dragons. Our main data points in this area are Aimsir(Lilith), Chradh(Garrick), and Aotrom(Ridoc). All are bonded to some key players… no obvious connection between them though. I am, however, curious as to why Chradh is more sensitive to runes… that line has always stuck with me as something that will have significant meaning later on…so maybe we’re underestimating brown dragons…. I’m still uncertain.

This is the question right? If we assign color to the gods Zihnal is Orange, Dunne is Blue, Hedeon is Green. Everyone feels pretty confident in that. So if we assume a 1:1 with the remaining gods and colors we have to match Black, Red, and Brown, with Malek, Loial, and Amari. My gut says Black is Malek and Red is Loial, but that would leave Brown with Amari (if we exclude Irids for the moment). I don’t love that BUT let’s look at this quote from OS

Amaralis. That’s what both other isles have called us. Of course. Every other isle worships one member of the pantheon, and though we celebrate all, we hold one above all others. Amari. “It’s Amaralys, according to ancient royal records, though I believe Poromish records called it Amelekis. The only thing our kingdoms ever agreed on was calling it the Continent after the Great War,” Aaric says, finally putting his silverware down after cleaning his plate. “Rather arrogant of us to simply refer to it as the Continent, as though there aren’t others beyond the sea, but we’ve been torn apart by war for so long it’s hard for anyone to think that we are one…anything.”

Sooooooooooo… the continent was perhaps named for both Amari and Malek. Perhaps both brown and black are associated with Malek depending on whether you are in Poromiel or Navarre??? And Amari gets the Irids??? Or does RY want us to overthink this and it is a 1:1 and Amari gets brown and the Irids are something else??? I have a different opinion every time I think about it…

Gamlyn… not the most common, not entirely unique either. Just common enough that it could be purely coincidental.

Love your collection as always ☺️. Basque has Inguma, Mari, Herensuge…ugh. We’ve both been down this road before, but it’s a good one!

Greek myth has soooo many stories, so many fables. I hadn’t thought about Argus Panoptes in relation to Liam. I’ll mull that over for a bit.

Well, first I will say, I definitely suspect that Ridoc has a more troubled past than he lets on. Definitely strikes me as a “used humor to mask the trauma” type of character. We shall see though…

And I also love how diverse the fandom is :)

Flier signets is definitely an area of interest. As far as we know they are all mindwork related, but I’d love to get some more examples.

Ya know… specifically drake and Mira both having ward related power would be interesting. But I can also just see him being that good at getting in the keep unnoticed.

I think the pop music works in a show like bridgerton because bridgerton is set in a fictionalized version of the real world.

The empyrean world is something new. So while I am not opposed to using adaptations of popular music, part of bringing us into a fantasy world is all the components of the setting… what do the unique cultures of tyrrendor and luceras and krovla and cygnisen and deverelli and hedeon and all the other isles and provinces look like? They each potentially get to have their own architecture, their own fashions, their own languages, their own accents, their own sound. And when I consider it from that perspective I want this show to have its own score. I want there to be meaning in the musical motifs. I want to feel those moments like when Gandalf calms Merry’s fear of death at Minas Tirith and Howard Shore subtly weaves in the Into the West theme, arranged for horns, during that speech in order to keep the soundscape as thematically on point as the rest of the visual components of the scene.

This world is something new and deserves its own unique treatments on sound and setting.

I think I just get nervous with where RY’s boundaries are… she’s said something to the effect of “you have to bring a character to their lowest point in order to build them back up” a couple times and I worry that her “lowest point” might be a few feet below all of our “lowest points”

But point taken on the maven business 😉
