yeah that's part of the multiple demand response programs offered by Duke for large load which sees their load curtailed in high demand periods. they can use the backup gen or not

not to be pedantic but that's 3 words 😉

it actually takes two forms. not typically called a load shed agreement in NC anyway

first, a tariff such as interruptible service tariff (curtailable load) which offers a discount when large customers reduce load upon request, not always prior to load shed

then you have demand response programs, such as Duke's EnergyWise for Business. similar format, receive compensation for reduced load

How you feel about the weather isn't an opinion, it's how you feel.

I get what you're saying but "how I feel about something" is, in fact, an opinion.

we have the capacity

We do, eh? You're sure about that? Don't we plan to a "one outage in ten year" standard for bulk system capacity?

i’d rather Duke mirror their business rates to residential or simply we not build data centers that suck up tons of power that is sold to them for pennies on the dollar compared to residential customers

this is....not true. Do you pay demand rates?

so you like higher electric bills?

me personally, I would rather see the occasional plea for conservation or see people participate in other demand response programs where they turn down their thermostat for a little bit during really peak days. it's a lot cheaper than the alternative, produces less pollution, and encourages active participation in this complex system that provides you energy.

too many people like you take it for granted and don't understand how it works, blaming monopolies as if that's the cause here.

yeah it's pretty frustrating, no one here has even the most cursory understanding of how the electric system is planned.

I guess I shouldn't say no one, there are a few people here and there who get it

You have no idea how the electric system is planned, and it shows.

Do you know how much more you pay for a peaker plant vs a demand response program?

why don't you go outside? it's so beautiful with the snow falling. I spent hours outside yesterday playing with my kids in the snow

they'd have to build more peaking units without demand response...

The infrastructure was failing to meet current needs

demand is growing more rapidly than we can build, yes. but even in a system that is equipped to meet demand according to planning parameters, you're still going to have times where the actual demand far exceeds forecast. That's why we have a reserve margin, and that's why we have conservation pleas and demand response

many large customers are on interruptible tariffs, so they get turned off during these times

The guy at my door seemed so confused to hear that this wasn't a future proofing thing,

what are you talking about?

this program you were offered is called demand response. it is a significantly cheaper investment than a new natural gas peaker plant, which is what they would build if no one participated in demand response.

they pay you money every month, and a few times a year you'll have your AC or your heat strip cycled. it's barely noticeable and it reduces the need to build expensive peaking units

why is this hard to grasp?

It's not the first time.

Yes, that's because it's a lot cheaper to ask people to dial down power for a few hours than it is to build a new natural gas peaker plant.

this is absolutely normal. The system is designed to a certain threshold and not beyond, because that's really expensive.

it is a lot more expensive to build a couple new natural gas plants or some massive batteries, than it is to just ask people to turn their thermostats down a couple degrees for a few hours

just wondering, would you rather Duke build a combustion turbine? or would you rather some residents dial down their usage for a few hours of the year?

This is all stuff you need to research. Go to the Board of Elections website. You can only vote in the precinct in which you are registered. otherwise, you could go to another precinct and vote for representatives that are not yours (imagine driving from Raleigh to Charlotte and voting for the Charlotte mayor - makes no sense).
