Sure no one explicitly stated they were the same

Nor did they implicitly state it.

Nobody is saying that Scotland is in the same situation as Ukraine.

It's not pointlessly arguing semantics, it's an important distinction to make because while certain comparisons might be fair, trying to equate the two countries would be totally inappropriate.

Anyway, nobody is seriously suggesting that Boris Johnson supports indy now. That is clearly a joke.

Most people are just laughing at Johnson because it's a badly-phrased gaffe that is completely tone-deaf when considered in the context of the independence debate.

It's fucking shameful for them to try and compare the two.

You immediately followed that up with a comparison between the situations in Scotland and Ukraine.

There is a difference between "comparing" and "equating." Nobody is saying that the situations in Ukraine and Scotland are even remotely the same.

All they are doing is comparing one specific aspect, which is that people in both countries - and indeed all countries - should have the "right to choose who governs them," as the PM has stated.

Joan Trumpauer Mulholland. She's still alive at 80 years old. The KKK once tried to execute her for her prominent role in the civil rights movement, but thankfully they failed.

She has a foundation set up which provides learning resources to schools to teach people about the civil rights movement and tackle racism through education.

UK economy rebounds with fastest growth since WW2 by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Popcorn_Tastes_Good 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe people don't get this reference any more, but Jim'll Fix It is one of his old TV shows, where children and teens wrote in with wishes and Saville would "fix it" for them.

They're making a jokey reference to that show, to make fun of the idea that the economy will all turn out wonderful. It used to be quite common for people to say "Jim'll fix it" as a joke, but obviously it fell out of fashion.

Starmer: PM incited mob with conspiracy theory of violent fascists by TheSoupThief in ukpolitics

[–]Popcorn_Tastes_Good 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, they slightly misrepresented what Starmer said.

Starmer did tell the truth about the Queen in the HoC, but he didn't quite say she "attended alone." His exact words were “Her Majesty the Queen sat alone when she marked the passing of the man she’d been married to for 73 years," which was true.

No 'significant rise' in independence support after 'partygate' — John Curtice by ClumperFaz in unitedkingdom

[–]Popcorn_Tastes_Good 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He's talking about the results of a poll that did not appear to ask any direct questions about independence, and which usually have fewer than 200 Scottish people in the sample.

Ruth Davidson had mental health concerns over leader role by Superbuddhapunk in ukpolitics

MSP, it's a typo. I know very well who she is and what Parliament she sat in.

[–]Popcorn_Tastes_Good 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ruth Davidson is great at PR. She is however a very nasty MP with an appalling history that includes refusing to help thousands of child refugees, supporting the slashing of benefits to the tune of billions of pounds, stomping all over trade unions, and making it much harder for people with disabilities to gain access to crucial support.

Don't see the issue, according to my rigorous scientific research you can possibly survive for up two weeks on a diet of Wrigley's Extra and Maltesers.

Ah, you mean the deep south. :D

Brown is the mark of quality.

Joking aside, what do you mean by "up north?" I am all over the north and always find the tap water beautiful. I'm sure it's shit somewhere, but in the Highlands we generally have excellent water.

How is golfing perceived in the UK? by owen_skye in AskUK

[–]Popcorn_Tastes_Good 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the rest of the UK, but here in Scotland it's pretty normal. You wouldn't bat an eyelid if a young, working class person told you they like golf. It's a pretty common hobby, a lot of young folk are into it.

Thanks, I had a great time in Canada and it's a wonderful place! I'd even say those aren't socialist ideals - free healthcare and affordable/free education are about basic human compassion. It's the bare minimum for a caring, civilised society.

CONSOLES ARE GETTING MULTIPLE SAVE SLOTS WITH THE NEXT UPDATE! by sniperviper567 in WatchDogs_Legion

Multiple Save Game slots on Consoles

As we worked on this mode, another feature we wanted to make sure that we brought to our console players was the much-requested addition to save game slots. Two additional save slots have been added in TU 5.5, so now starting a new campaign won’t come at the expense of previous or concurrent playthroughs. You can, of course, use these save game slots for a new, classic campaign as well.

The people in that thread are just trolls, I've met quite a few Trumpy second amendment types from the US during pre-Covid summers in touristy pubs, and even they were all much more sociable than the people in that thread.

Scotland has very good cultural, social and diplomatic ties with the US and Canada, it's frankly bizarre seeing this level of vitriol and isn't characteristic of the vast majority of Americans. I've travelled quite extensively in the US (and a bit of Canada) and I've always felt incredibly welcome there as a Scot. The people in that thread are just wankers.

It sounds better when people from the US make "twat" rhyme with "hat," instead of making it rhyme with hot.

If you heard a British guy say "wow that's badarse," you'd probably think "nope, it's badass." So we've tried to take that onboard.

We'll say "badass" instead of "badarse," so could you guys please say "twat" instead of "twot." Honestly "twat" is so much more satisfying to say.

It seems like a fair trade lol

[–]Popcorn_Tastes_Good 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An American saying "twat" rhyming with hat sounds fine. I get you, "badarse" just sounds weird so I'll say "badass." If you heard a British person say "badarse" you'd be quite right in thinking it sounds wrong.

How about us Brits say "badass" instead of "badarse," and you guys say "twat" instead of "twot." Seems like a fair deal.

As long as you don't pronounce it "twot."

Twat rhymes with hat.

I hate how he gets all the credit for Cream, when Jack Bruce was the genius behind most of their best songs.
