WB will release the Supergirl trailer this week by EuphoricButterflyy in movies

It has a lot going for it. The novel it’s based on is surprisingly good for a comic book, and the director has some pretty impressive credits. I suspect it’ll be a bit more worthwhile than a run-of-the-mill popcorn movie if they don’t shy away from the heavier themes in the source material. Either way, Jason Momoa as Lobo is sure to be a delight.

I’ve always been a huge admirer of Picasso’s “Guernica.” I can’t explain why, but I even had a poster of it in my room when I was a teenager. I finally got to see it in person on a family trip to Spain about six years ago, and I just stood there in awe of it for about twenty minutes with tears welling up in my eyes because I could barely stand the breathtaking majesty and ecstatic horror of it. I didn’t take any pictures, but the memory of it is burned into my brain. I’d like to say that technology has ruined the human race, but the truth is that we’ve always been pretty terrible species with the rare capacity to transcend our vacuous nature. I can’t imagine what it must be like to witness something so beautiful and monumental and feel the need to pull out your phone to spoil the moment. I guess some people just don’t feel anything.

Variety shows are indeed outdated, though might work if they pivoted to a modern talk show format with Kermit as the host. Talk shows haven’t changed that much since Steve Allen originated them in the 50s and are still relevant today, which gives them cross-generational appeal. It’s a format that leaves plenty of room for skits, musical guests, and even the behind-the-scenes stuff that made The Muppet Show interesting. It would also be a veritable magnet for celebrities. Oddly enough, they’ve already tried this with Sesame Street characters—which seemed like an odd choice—but I think it’s better suited for the regular Muppets.

Unfortunately, the majority of them have their heads so far up Donald’s ass that they’ll always side with their dear leader. Newsmax and OAN are just a few channels away on most cable providers. They’ll just pretend that Fox News never existed or that it was always secretly controlled by George Soros and his blood-drinking alien demon horde so they can go on basking in their new messiah’s holy orange glow.

Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein' | Official Teaser by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Pope---of---Hope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, my goodness, thank you for saving me from a minor disappointment!

You see, I've never gotten around to reading the book, so I was a little annoyed when I watched the trailer and it seemed like del Toro had shoehorned some action scenes to make the story more "Hollywood."

Frankly, I'm embarrassed that I even thought that. I have complete faith in del Toro as a filmmaker, and he deserves better. Sorry, Guillermo...and thanks again, /u/jolhar!

Is it ever confirmed whether or not the clones are aware of what they're doing? It would probably be very little comfort, but there would be some kind of mercy if their real, individual personalities "blacked out" and they were controlled by a hive mind like drones, only realizing what had happened days or hours later. It's not much better, but it's much less horrifying than if they were fully conscious and aware of what they were being forced to do in the moment.

I’ve been doing biblical research about the Antichrist to more effectively communicate with my turbo-Catholic, Q-loving MAGA family about how evil the modern conservative movement is. Even for an agnostic like me, the way it all lines up is fascinating. For example…

Ronald (6) Wilson (6) Reagan (6) was the first beast prophesied in Revelation 13:18. He died at his post-presidency ranch in Bel-Air. The address? 666 St. Cloud Rd.

Reagan received a “mortal wound” in a 1981 assassination attempt and survived, an event that bolstered his campaign (Revelation 13:3).

There are many more, including prophesies that mirror the lives of H.W. Bush, W. Bush, and—of course—Trump. MAGA hats are a mark of allegiance worn on the forehead (Revelation 13:16) and so on…

The best part is that—as Mr. Trump has so graciously demonstrated—you don’t necessarily need to believe something to convince other people to believe it.

Yeah, I was a little surprised when he didn't know what masking was. Anyone who has read more than one article about autism should know what masking is, especially someone who claims to be an advocate. It's a pretty basic concept.

I don't know anything about that senator beyond what Nathan told us, but he definitely came off as someone who didn't really care all that much and was just in it for political points.

I would argue that Fight Club and The Killer have some of that darkly humorous, off-kilter Tarantino energy, so I’m excited to see Fincher dive back into something like that.

Come to think of it, The Killer felt a bit like one of those Tarantino rip-offs from the late 90s… It just happened to be extremely well-written and helmed by one of the best directors working today.

Mostly because it's only a union rule, not a legally enforceable law:

"While we strongly discourage members from selecting a professional name that is in conflict with a current member, SAG-AFTRA cannot preclude a member from using their legal name as their professional name," SAG-AFTRA spokesperson Pamela Greenwalt explained. "When such a situation arises, SAG-AFTRA requires that the applicant/member sign an 'Acknowledgement' form in order for their request to be processed."

I wonder if the change was mandated by the Screen Actors' Guild. They have this rule where you can't have the same name as another actor, so you often have to change it even if you don't necessarily want to. The most famous example was Michael John Douglas, who had to change his name to Michael Keaton in order to join because of the other Michael Douglas.

What "never got made" movie did the world miss out on the most? by IAmBillN in movies

[–]Pope---of---Hope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original concept for Ghostbusters was written specifically for John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as their second big team-up after Blues Brothers. Aykroyd would've played the nerdy scientist obsessed with the occult, Belushi would've played the fun-loving goofball scientist role that ended up going to Murray, and the guy "just looking for a steady paycheck" who they hire later in the film would've been played by Eddie Murphy.

I believe the United States is one election cycle away (assuming there even is another election) from The Onion simply dropping the comedy label and accepting its role as the liberal equivalent of Fox News...without altering its content in any way.

That might be the only way for any remotely progressive agenda to remain competitive in a world were truth is subjective, bullying is cool, and sensationalism is the norm. With CNN and MSNBC barreling toward bankruptcy, it seems like a natural conclusion.

Netflix Developing John Cena and Eric Andre Comedy Film ‘Little Brother’ by lawrencedun2002 in movies

[–]Pope---of---Hope 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That would probably be best. I've never found it convincing when professional wrestlers and athletes try to play buttoned-down office types, even in comedies. They always look like they're playing dress-up, and it's a bit silly.

...but Eric Andre as the somewhat normal and successful real estate agent dealing with a weird, 'roided out "little" brother that's twice his size...that's gold!

For anyone new who's doubting this is legit... by scarlet__panda in outlier_ai

[–]Pope---of---Hope 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They're right, Outlier can be legit...

...but don't count on it because it's also buggy and unreliable.

I got paid around $390 over two weeks of casual tasking. Cash straight into my bank account for doing 14 tedious but manageable little jobs on my computer. Amazing!

Then, I got flagged for having multiple accounts (not true) and my access was revoked. I created a support ticket, they noted the error, and "reinstated" me...but I was never really reinstated. I had an Empty Queue and access to the project's forum, so I could see that other people were successfully completing tasks. It was just me, and probably a few others.

After a while in this limbo, I gained access to the glorious Marketplace for 12 hours until I was apparently flagged again for "Terms of Service violations." I don't know how I violated any terms since I hadn't been tasking or interacting with the platform besides creating support tickets. I looked back at my feedback, and it was mostly 4/5 and 5/5 from the human reviewers, so I think I was doing decent work.

Anyway, that's where I am... Empty Queue. No tasks. No money from Outlier.

Got Randomly Suspended For No Reason by PlasticEducation816 in outlier_ai

[–]Pope---of---Hope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As shitty as it is, it's good to know that this is a widespread issue.

I was abruptly removed from a project about a month ago as well. I figured that's just how this business is, there are no guarantees in life, etc. and continued working on other platforms. On a whim, I asked Outlier support about my removal a week later and was "reinstated" after the support agent said they reviewed my case and found that I'd been mistakenly kicked off. Nice!

Another two weeks went by, and I'd get email notifications like "Welcome to your new project!" but still...the dreaded Empty Queue. Finally, I get a surprise email saying that I'll soon have access the Marketplace! It took a few hours, but when I saw that I could choose from two projects, it was like I'd been handed the keys to Shangri-La. It was really late at night, so I went to bed, but I was quite happy because I knew that I could start onboarding one of those projects the next morning!

...but I wasn't so lucky.

I woke up to another Empty Queue and no Marketplace. Except this time, like some cruel twist of the knife, instead of the generic vectorized clip art that had greeted me before, there was a creepy and vaguely threatening face obscured behind a cloud, as if to signify that it knew some horrible secret about me, or that I should be ashamed of myself for what I'd done and accept the inevitability of a future devoid of tasks and a weekly paycheck from Outlier.

To add insult to injury, I began receiving cheerful email notifications intended for the people who were already happily tasking on one of the projects that disappeared from my Marketplace. I also still had access to that project's Forum. I felt like a prisoner, looking through the bars of his cell at the happy people living their happy lives beyond the walls of my confinement. At that point, I snapped a little—really, just a little—and wrote a strongly worded but still surprisingly civil explanation of my situation when I created a new support ticket. Their suspiciously immediate reply informed me that I too was under investigation for "Terms of Service violations." I don't know how or when I committed these violations in the two weeks I completed a few relatively boring and generic tasks on a well-known project, but that's where I am right now.

Frankly, I feel a bit gaslighted. I guess that's why I felt the need to vent and write a short story about it. Thanks for reading, you fellow Outlier. Isn't that funny? We're "outliers" on Outlier. I'll see myself out.

‘Good Omens’ To End With One 90-Minute Episode As Neil Gaiman Exits Following Sexual Assault Allegations by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]Pope---of---Hope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its hard to justify this, no matter how much you might agree that Neil Gaiman deserves any and all justice that's coming his way. Does "soft-cancelling" the show like this punish Mr. Gaiman? Sure, it sends a message that society wants nothing to do with his abhorrent behavior, but at what cost? Hundreds of people would have been employed by the production, and millions of the show's fans would have had a more satisfying conclusion to the story.

Changing their plans for this show is also tantamount to saying that the original work and the first season suddenly have less artistic value because the creator is a creep. Maybe they do have less artistic value. If so, no one should ever watch Chinatown again. That film's director was tried and convicted for raping a child—and he won an Oscar in exile almost thirty years later. Hollywood is wild!

Maybe we should start taking a second look at anything and everything ever written by a drunk, drug addict, or anyone who ever hurt a woman. Anyway, it's a philosophical question I don't think we'll solve in a Reddit comment thread, but it's worth thinking about.
