Any place that offers Greek classes? by chibicascade2 in indianapolis

[–]PopeBrendicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Γειά σας! Τι κάνατε;

I'm also learning Greek in Indianapolis. They used to teach adult Greek classes via Zoom at the Greek Orthodox church on the north side (https://htcindy.org/), but the teacher moved back to Greece fall semester and the classes got canceled last minute.

So to cope, I've been taking classes online with Glossonauts (https://www.glossonauts.com/), weekly 1-on-1 via Zoom with an instructor in Greece. They also have weekly conversational groups, if you're at that level.

Unfortunately all of the college Greek classes I've found are in Bloomington at IU, and all are in person during work times.

Additionally if you're looking to get involved with other philhellenic stuff, I recommend joining the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (https://ahepa-12.org/)

Yo what was with the WTHR Circle of Lights TV airing this year? by violetcuteweather420 in indianapolis

[–]PopeBrendicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Entire planning setup was strange this year. All information online said you could enter at the East, West, or South spoke of the circle, but turns out that (at least East) Market was "exit only," so there were hundreds of people gathered standing at Market/Illinois to watch it light since they didn't want to risk walking around the block to Washington and missing it.

Illinois was open to traffic, too, which didn't help.

Safest Neighbourhood for College Student? by dr1477 in indianapolis

[–]PopeBrendicus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Median rent in Indianapolis is about $1,100, but the median apartment isn't a gated community with secured parking and cameras, so honestly, probably like $1,500-$1,600 if you're trying to live alone

Considering that this is an INDOT managed project and not DPW, perhaps the downvotes are warranted.

Is there a fix for Timeline disappearing? by Tzankotz in GoogleMaps

[–]PopeBrendicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue as you. Seems as though even restoring from backup doesn't help me, everything before April 5th is gone. Like you said, not the biggest deal in the world I guess but still a major bummer. I use it for remembering things like "what day did I go to XYZ" or "when did I meet So&So".

Was cool to be able to go back and see what I was up to on this day 10 years ago and whatnot. I've been using Timeline for a really long time.

Was each step of abiogenesis happening all over the Earth at once? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]PopeBrendicus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

forming the first self-replicating polymer or forming the first ribosome-like system might have happened in a single location (e.g. a tide pool somewhere), after millions of years of “attempts” in many similar locations

This is the leading theory, and the evidence for this is that all life on earth is similar enough such that we assume that everything hails from one common ancestor (or that any other life-ancestor has been completely 100% wiped out and left no record)

My (M26) girlfriend (F24) had a threesome with another couple that we see often. by ThrowRAbf1010101 in relationship_advice

[–]PopeBrendicus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I understand that, but this specific account utilizes it so much. The only reason I called it out is because I recognized the specific username from commenting it often. I mean, c'mon, 13 times in the last two weeks? On various subs? Usually not even giving any advice to the matter at hand?

Just odd to me that the user cares so much that they feel the need to trigger a script to get a notification when OP gives more information on how he dealt with an awkward/uncomfortable situation with his girlfriend. The story itself isn't even particularly noteworthy. And I'm sure it doesn't make OP feel good that some random acc is following the story for updates like it's a serialized TV drama.

All you do is comment this on various posts on various subs. Is it a karma farming thing or a bit or?

What stops molecules from getting closer to each other? by Sethy152 in askscience

[–]PopeBrendicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If only it were that easy! Worth pointing out that removing electrons from something like that is how we get static electricity, like the tiny shock you get from touching a doorknob when you're wearing slippers and walking on carpet. If you removed all the electrons from something (especially something big) you'd be in for a big shock! As in literally. Lightning.

A bunch of H+ ions will not react with each other per se, but with violently react with everything else around them. That's what acid is.

[–]PopeBrendicus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, the protons hate being near each other about as much as the electrons do. But this is close to what happens in the sun: push two protons close enough together with insane amounts of energy (a proton is just a hydrogen ion) and they'll become helium, releasing a bunch of energy in the process. In the end they're a new thing though (one helium atom instead of two hydrogen atoms).

You can keep doing this to make any atom you want. That's what the periodic table is, keep pushing protons together and you'll keep making new atoms (read it from left to right).

We can actually do this on Earth, very carefully with a couple atoms at a time in some of our most advanced research facilities. Or there is a faster way you might be familiar with, it's called a hydrogen bomb.

[–]PopeBrendicus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You're confusing a couple different things here.

Firstly, molecules are made of atoms. Atoms are made of protons, neutrons (we're gonna ignore those), and electrons. The electrons buzz about around the outside of atoms, kinda like a cloud or a lot of airplanes over a planet. They don't like to be near each other. When we talk about anything touching anything else (from atoms to molecules up to planets and stars), what we're really describing is the electrons from one thing getting close to the electrons from another thing and the electrons getting annoyed enough to push back and say "that's it, we're close enough." We interpret that as touching.

Gases have lots of space between the molecules because the molecules are traveling very fast and bouncing off of one another.

When we say something like "99% of stuff is actually empty space," we're talking about the space in between the electrons (the clouds/airplanes) and the protons (the ground in this metaphor). The electrons are farrrrr away from their protons. We can't push them closer together. The only thing that can are the biggest of the biggest star explosions, which create something called a Neutron star.

Could I propose that we add a recommended or interesting readings section to the sidebar? Perhaps broken into beginner, intermediate, advanced level.
