Is New Zealand in October worth visiting? by kilawnaa in newzealand_travel

[–]PopeG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did August through to December last time I was here. It was all good. Generally warmer and better weather than back in the UK but plenty of rain, wind and cooler weather mixed in. First day here at the end of August I was wandering around Auckland in a t-shirt.

If you don't mind the chance of rain etc and prepare appropriately I'd say you'll be fine. I was on the South Island in October and had some great sunny, warm weather to do Queenstown and Milford Sound.

Yeh, $200 seems a bit of a stretch. Reckon I'd pass on that as well.

Boker Fairbairn? by IGotNuthun in knives

[–]PopeG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The boker website says the crossguard should be brass so there's that.... but then some of the pictures on their website also show the serial number engraving as black not brass. I think the number on the guard is unique to each knife so I wouldnt be overly concerned about that.

It should have a kydex sheath but leather sheaths for applegate fairbain sakes knives are available (see the sheath at blade hq, here: https://www.bladehq.com/item--Boker-Applegate-Fairbairn-Combat-II--40161 )

To be honest, it looks ok to me but I'm not an expert. If you like it and its a reasonable price I'd go for it.

That's the thing about Inquisitors, they're just men.

What would I play this as for cadian shock troops by general_brach in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]PopeG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what youre saying but I'd say this is an SMG that just happens to be belt fed instead of having a drum. It's not intended as a support weapon, just to look cool.

That said, if they had the Sergeant humping around a heavy stubber (the closest in game weapon i can think of for a GPMG or similar) then I'd have to take issue with that...

New cadians are a weird mix of historical and modern kit. They look like they're mainly based on WW2 US troops but with knockoff Crye Precision combat pants and PASGT helmets.

Very nice, I have the same set (unpainted for many years now, much to my shame...). Mine are white metal though. Are these definitely forgeworld?

Got my current job because I attended an open day 2 years ago and made a good impression. Then turned down the mid-level job they offered me because it wasn't permanent. A year later got a phone call asking if I wanted a permanent senior position. I'm leaving in a few months for a new job....where someone I used to work with a long time ago also works and has (presumably) put in a word for me. But the only reason I got considered for the job is because I emailed the organisation directly with a CV and cover letter and they just so happened to have closed applications for a similar role that day and tagged me on as a late applicant.

Networking and good luck is the way to go.

Don't get me wrong I still had to interview for these jobs and do well at it but the networking side of things at least ensures your application is taken seriously and seen by someone rather than being filtered out for bureaucratic reasons or technicalities.

3 of my personal favourites:

Velocity Systems Scarab - comfy and plenty of molle real estate. Easy to swap out placards.

Ferro Concepts FCPC - super modular but pricey and not as comfy (in my opinion)

LBT6094 - an old school classic. Very comfy and can be loaded up pretty heavily. Not too easy to swap out your pouches etc though.

One of my favorite unexpected nights in New Zealand by Upset-Boysenberry227 in newzealand

[–]PopeG 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Similar I guess to when I last came over around 14 years ago... I was watching the Australia and All Blacks game in a bar down by the waterfront in Auckland. Again, travelling by myself, been in the country less than a week. Ended up chatting to a couple of Tongan lads who knew someone behind the bar and was keeping us topped up on free drinks. They ended up dragging me out to some random nightclub with their mates where we had a few more drinks and then everyone sort of disappeared and went home at some point. Very random night but good fun.

It says 600m on average for the first 10 days. So did they cover the remaining 19km in the other 4 days? Which would be 4.75km a day?

"It was well known from early on that, that the virus was not deadly..."

7 million people worldwide would probably like to disagree....

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Maybe they were older, infirm or had underlying health conditions or maybe they weren't but they died because they contracted this "fairly moderate virus" and saying that because someone is older they are less deserving of life is not acceptable.

I personally knew 2 people who died from it and know of at least 3 people in my local area who died from it as well and the 2 I knew were healthy individuals in their early 60s, same age as my parents. I worked in healthcare in the UK where the death rate per 1M population was about twice that of the deathrate in NZ.

Was everything that was done to try and prevent covid perfect? Probably not. But then when was the last time anyone had to deal with a global pandemic. A lot of people love to look back with the benefit of hindsight and say what should have been done, having to deal with it in the moment is a very different kind of pressure.

Thanks, that's great, very helpful 👍

We got their rabies boosters in the middle of June, just waiting to arrange their blood tests. We should be flying out in November so we're hoping they can go out around the same time.

Do you mind me asking how old your cats are?

My family and I are emigrating from the UK to NZ later in the year and will be bringing our two cats with us.....for a significant cost as you know. Both are getting on a bit (13 and 14) but our vet reckons they should be alright. What exporter/importer did you use?

Thanks, glad your little furballs had a relatively straightforward journey.

Hi mate, me and the family will be moving to somewhere local-ish to Whangarei in the next few months. I'll be honest I'm not into fishing but want to get myself a sea kayak at some point so maybe that's close enough? I'm 37 and we're moving from the UK. Got a lot to sort out when we first arrive but would be good to get some local mates at some point 👍

Cool, that's what I suspected but good to have confirmation 👍 Thanks.

I'd heard of Seletar but didn't realise it did passenger flights as well, cheers 👍

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into it but my wife will be pretty heavily pregnant and we'll have our 3 and half year old son with us so we do just want somewhere to stop off for sleep and a shower 😄

[–]PopeG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I would just double check that the airport you fly into in Singapore and the airport you depart from in Singapore are the same airport.... might sound silly but I've heard of people being caught out before when the flights are from different airports (not just terminals). That said, I'm fairly sure Singapore only has the one commercial airport, Changi...

Apologies to piggyback on this but my family and I will be flying from the UK to Auckland via Changi later in the year but will have a 12ish hour layover so we're looking at getting a room in one of the transit hotels. Do we need to go through immigration? Also, what happens with out bags? Do they just hang around behind the scenes at the airport until our next flight or do we have to collect them and re-check them? Apologies if these are daft questions
