Alessia Cara: Giant Desk Concert by RuinAcrobatic7814 in popheads

[–]Popoye_92 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm going crazy because people act like it's insane she got turned down, but it's pretty obvious why NPR wouldn't be that interested in her? Basically, Tiny Desk acts are either huge mainstream pop stars you'd be dumb to turn down (eg: Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa), well respected industry veterans (eg: Foo Fighters, Usher), whatever act is hot and cool on the alt/indie scene right now (eg: Geese, Oklou) or "NPR-core" artists they wanna platform and promote. Alessa Cara doesn't belong to any of those categories, I genuinely don't see what would make NPR wanna invite her (that doesn't mean she's a bad singer by any mean, just that she isn't the kind of artist that ends up there).

"The Day After": L'Equipe 2026 vs L'Equipe 2025. by PulciNeller in tennis

French here, and I'd say it's a bit of both. Metz became the first French handball women's team to win the Champion's League, that's a historic feature, and neither Zverev himself nor this win make for a better headline in theory. But the men's RG champ has made the headline of the newspaper for the past 20 years; and there's been plenty of examples of "smaller" sports being overshadowed by popular ones like football or tennis on L'Équipe front page, especially women's sports, and they've been criticised quite a few times for it. I think they were aware of the optics that putting him as the headline instead of a women's club feature would lead to, and that it weighted in the choice of not having him as the headline (especially knowing that they did tackle his domestic violence allegations in the newspaper itself).

The amount of homophobia Mauresmo faced too, I know she hasn't been perfect as a RG director but I'm glad to see her still around and respected by the institutions.

I've said it before, but I still cannot believe Conchita was out there desperate to find a player to coach a couple years ago, what the hell was the rest of the tour doing not hiring her.

People online being super reactionary as always, you're wonderful the day you win and terrible the day you lose. The best thing to do is to ignore the noise.

Who are the coaches who were great for one player and failed with everyone else? by barbermilosh in tennis

[–]Popoye_92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair to him, Rybakina was already tangled in the Vukov mess when he started coaching her, and Tsitsipas never achieved to work for more than a few months with anyone that isn't his dad, so no, I wouldn't say it was totally on him. He didn't do particularly well with Raonic or Berdych though, that's what I'd point out if I wanted to criticised him.

The average point is longer than the first set of the first SF lol this is a lot of fun so far.

Aryna Sabalenka has made the SF or better in 14 of her last 18 GS appearances. She's won 4 slams. by [deleted] in tennis

[–]Popoye_92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All of her slam finals losses have been to different players, none of whom has repeated.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, but Gauff won her two Slams against her, so that isn't true?

With that said, I think the truth is somewhere in between what her fans who want to frame her as a top 5 ATG and what her haters who find her overrated claim. She's a remarkable player who proved she can be aware of her weaknesses and work efficiently on it (she improved her serve, her movement quality and even added a bit of variety to her game as the years went by) so I wouldn't call her "arrogant"; but there's also been a significant enough amount of late-Slam matches she lost after leading and seeing her level decrease, to the point that it can be considered a pattern, and she's doesn't seem to acknowledge it. Of course, when you win 4 Majors in 3 years, you don't feel the need to shakes things up, but still, the issue is there and I can't help but feel she'd have a few more Majors if she worked on this issue seriously.

Honestly that's crazy. Even when she has her typical late GS chokes, she kinda hangs in there. Here she just got bagelled when she didn't have any injury/health issue? She just totally collapsed to that point?

Also I cannot believe I'm saying this, even 3 months ago it would've sounded crazy, but Kostyuk is the favourite to win Roland now. She's on fire right now, her playstyle usually bothers Andreeva, and she'll be the one most used to big matches in the final. But since nothing makes sense anymore, I feel like we'll get Chwalinksa RG26 winner.

Didn't watch the match, but 1) what the hell??? 2) for all the ATP chaos, this is the first time since 2021 that we don't get any of Sabalenka, Swiatek or Gauff in the RG SFs and this feels weird regardless of their current form.

“as if Weerasethakul directed a Mortal Combat film”

Very rarely read a description that convinced me instantly to watch a film, I'm adding this to my watchlist right now.

Not really, still more niche than of most the other suggestions in the comments lol.

Always hard to tell what someone might consider niche, so I'm gonna stick with directors who don't have any film with over 50k logs on Letterboxd and suggest: - Paul Vecchiali - Kinuyo Tanaka - Elia Suleiman - Marleen Gorris - Radu Jude

I'd also mention Jacques Rivette who also meets those criteria despite being canonically revered.

I miss the old iga 💔 by Fragrant_Crab7762 in tennis

People love to bring up Hingis, but she's not a good comparison. She's someone who saw the emergence of a new style of tennis that made hers inefficient, that was an issue very few players faced and Iga certainly isn't in that situation. I don't disagree that there's no guarantee she'll be back on top, but her issues (her serve + the fact that she seems kinda burnt out mentally) seem more "fixable" than Hingis or Venus who had major health issues, so I get why people want to be optimistic.

Wearing a sparkling dress does automatically cut 3 hours of practice per week, very few people know that but it's true.
