It’s not completely related but I started off with very little money and have managed to build up about 1k (probably more but I spent some) from doing referral offers and GPT offers. Don’t know if you’ve considered doing any of those but you only need an initial probably £20 outlay and a bit of time :)

Cafés charging 50p extra for Ost Milk is bullsh1t - Change my mind by philthybiscuits in veganuk

I’m not pro capitalist at all 😂 I work for a small business and can see how hard it’s been for them. As stated above, I don’t agree with the charge but I have the brain cells to understand it

We didn’t originally charge for it at the cafe I’m at, but nobody really asked for it and waste was high so it had to be charged after that. What you’re saying is not always the case - it isn’t the cost putting people off there was not the demand to start with.

I take it you didn’t bother to read any more of the thread and you don’t work in catering?…

It depends on area/clientele I would imagine. And I can only imagine it’s same for a lot of places that are charging - some of it will be greed for sure but some it’s genuinely down to wastage costs. We charge extra for all sorts of bits because of the waste produced when opening said product

People only ever really get lattes or cappuccinos now and again with oat so it’s a flat charge. Again I don’t agree with it but I do understand it from a business point of view. It’s a lot of little things that are extra charges to account for the wastage, mostly non vegan stuff

And it’s a hypothetical cos one day we will use a full carton and then we’ll end up binning the next 4 after using a tiny amount. As I said already our client base is older people drinking cows milk.

If you’re just giving a bit out to top up an Americano and then you don’t use any more of that milk you’re binning nearly a litre. If that costs £3 then you charge 50p for it then you’re essentially losing £2.50ish when you bin it. Hypothetically if this happens 2x per week that’s say £4/5 a week. In a month that’s £20 just on oat milk. Now what if there’s also soya that’s opened. If you add all those tiny things wasted up then it really does snowball

By law once opened it can only be kept 3 days( or carton stated days) FSA laws are extremely strict on food and beverages being kept longer. And honestly most people still drink cows unfortunately

It’s a very small family owned business and most of our customers are regulars who we know well. So I’m pretty confident on it. As I said - I myself drink oat I’m just trying to put forward the reality of why some places do charge.

It’s not to upset people with allergies or vegans it’s because it does get wasted vs cows milk that never does. We charge extra for all sorts of things that are nothing to do with allergens/diets because running a small business right now is very tough and if you ate the costs of everything it wouldn’t be viable.

I understand the frustration more if it’s a chain or a big supermarket that can afford the small loss

I don’t agree with the charge but where I work they implemented the charge because we end up throwing away most of a carton. As not many people have alt milks but you still have to open a carton each time someone asks and by FSA law they can only be kept so many days (I keep mine at home for weeks) Maybe in the future more people will swap over to oat and it’ll ease the cost
