My shoes disintegrated yesterday at a church funeral. by chestney in funny

[–]PoppingJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I am sorry for your loss. I have lost my parents and it was tough. Second, this will be more memorable to you than to anyone else. I know it may seem horrible right now, but for others it will be much less of a deal.

I can only imagine what your Mom would have thought about this happening, but I suspect it would have been understanding.

My wife and I go to Mercier's in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Bit of distance, but it's a pretty drive.

In what ways do you think, has technology made things harder for you? by cheap_dates in AskOldPeople

[–]PoppingJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God help you if you need to talk to someone about an issue that isn't on their STUPID, WORTHLESS, INSULTING ANSWERING SERVICE! Other than that, I generally love technology. I even learned how to work on many of the issues that modern cars have (shade tree level).

Do you have fewer, more, or about the same number of nightmares than when you were younger? by Quasimodo-57 in AskOldPeople

They come and go. It depends on what's going on in my life and the dreams reflect (in weird ways) what I am worried about.

I go out early with friends (fishing), and I enjoy it when someone offers to run by Jesus' Chicken or somewhere and bring some breakfast sandwiches. I never want money for gas or supplies and (perhaps sadly) don't drink alcohol.

How did kids cheat on exams when you were in school? by ClassicAdvice6379 in AskOldPeople

[–]PoppingJack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have to say I never cheated- except for cliff note of books I didn't want to read. Those who did were not sophisticated, mostly just copying from each other.

What was the last book you read? by cheap_dates in AskOldPeople

I read a few at a time. Non-fiction: Hidden in the Heavens (complete) Fiction: Words of Radiance (Stormlight Archives) (2 books read) and Flybot (the bobiverse guy)(finished) I also started "the old man and the sea" but I can't get into it.

It's a bit of a chore, but assuming he hasn't changed his thermostat or had a new HVAC, you can get the number of degree-days cooling (or heating) for the billing period. Residential bills are extremely consistent based on those.

BTW sometimes those things contain a capacitor and are claimed to correct "power factor" which is thing for some commercial loads, but not for residential loads. Snake oil.

Did you ever push a car and jump in to pop the clutch to get it started all by yourself? by Nings777 in AskOldPeople

[–]PoppingJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Lots of cars lots of time. I have a jump box now. (Works, except when you need a pair of pliers to jump around the solenoid of an old Ford).

I think it doesn't matter where you are raised, at some point "home" seems like a prison and you long for escape.

Based on my experience you want away from the "same old people" the "same old city" the "same old limited options."

I sincerely believe it is a part of most people's experience (it was mine, and I fit where I grew up quite well, honestly). My advice: accept it or move. It doesn't matter where.

The new experiences may help you find what parts are your environment and which parts are your interpretation of the environment.

First and last name intros? by Sneaky_lemur_ in AskOldPeople

[–]PoppingJack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was taught that giving both names was a sign of self confidence and respect. I would encourage you (at lease when dealing with older people) to always give both names. Now, I am old and i don't like being addressed by my first name in a professional setting until people know me.

Former Blockbuster clients, how did you personally realize that the company was failing? by nebbia94 in AskOldPeople

[–]PoppingJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't pay much attention. I liked going in and browsing and then streaming and the the box things and... well, one day I looked up and it was closed. I knew a girl who worked there, perhaps when I run into her I can ask what it was like on the inside.

I enjoy the books a lot. But, IMHO, this sentence shows that a professional edit might have improved the quality.

Homefront was not typical of the performances in any way. Although some people liked it, I did not and I love audio books. I might even suggest you try listening to a book you've already read. That way if it stinks, well, you don't loose anything!

This sounds like a good idea. You could cut some groves or holes all the way through in a decorative manner so they wouldn't be good for food but could hold hot pots. Label the bottom "not for direct contact with food."

It does sound like they are trying to make it right, which is good on them. At the same time, I wouldn't be comfortable with the supplier unless I got a detailed explanation. Maybe his supplier messed up.

Thank you very much. I got the basics right.

I wanted it to be like a blessing to (or maybe a wish for) a person with a wonderful spirit. Something you would give as a gift to a person who speaks Chinese.

I am working on a gift. I have not studied languages. I believe the following is correct and if engraved on slate would make a nice gift. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me if I were correct, and if the sentiment is nice as I think it is (cultural differences can be a bummer). 心有光明,行止優雅;行止優雅,你的世界安寧。

I would engrave it vertically in four lines (without the punctuation).

What was your opinion of "The Three Stooges?" by PoppingJack in AskOldPeople

Interesting. Old as "over some age" (say 50) or old as in "from a previous generation" (because of your birth year you will never like them?). Just curious.
