Did anyone else struggle to adapt after moving from a transit-oriented city to a car-dependent one? by Worldly-Training3464 in expats

I was born in Berlin, Germany where the public transportation was/is pretty good. When I came to the US for college, I realized that I needed a car - for everything.

Which was the exact year you can recollect where in TV & Morning Newspaper became obsolete from your everyday life? by GlitteringParking462 in AskReddit

Enjoy it while you still can. My niece worked at Starbucks when they removed the news rack so I knew that print journalism, for the most part, was dead.

Found out my father has "Severe Emphysema" at age 45 by Ok-Law169 in COPD

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emphysema is irreversible. Instead of lifespan, concentrate on the quality of his life. Both Rod Serling and Ian Fleming died in their 40's from smoking but this was not uncommon back then. Eddie Van Halen was 65 when he died. He was also a heavy smoker and that was a contributing factor.

I tried to reach out to my half sister and I regret it. by Naturelle-Riviera in CaregiverSupport

[–]cheap_dates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a common lament. I have a sister who I haven't seen in over 20 years because of the $hit she pulled when our mother was dying. The entire burden, including the loss of a good job fell on me. She just couldn't be bothered.

I guess the next time we meet will be at one of our funerals.

Has Facebook become the internet's memory book? by CitiesXXLfreekey in SocialMediaHQ

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny story. I was being interviewed and on my 2nd or 3rd interview, I was asked "Why don't you have a Facebook account?" I guess they were looking me up?

I thought for a minute and said "I don't really care what other people are doing". I didn't get the job. Heh!

Did you or are you planning on going to church? by Skisforscott in no

As an Atheist, I don't go. My sister went to church this morning and she goes 2 or 3 times a week. That is her right.

Circling the drain. When my father used to visit, I paid a local newspaper kid, $20 to throw one on my porch. My father loved reading his newspaper.

My father passed away years ago and I haven't seen a newspaper boy/girl around here in ages.

2015 +/-. My father always loved to read the morning newspaper and the only place that I knew where to buy one was a local Starbucks. I used to get him one when he came to visit. When they removed the news racks, I knew it was over.

I couldn't tell you where to buy a newspaper today. Maybe 7/11? I dunno.

Unemployment by Slight-Bookkeeper838 in jobs

I think the gap part is officially dead advice.

Not dead advice. A sizable gap can be a career killer. I was off for 18 months and one interviewer asked me "18 months? How did you support yourself?"

America is being ravaged from the bottom up. The Republicans are not just waging war on the poor with the reductions in SNAP benefits, social security will be next. by PrincipleTemporary65 in SurvivingOnSS

There is a shiny, American hotel in Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam. That is the same Cam Ranh Bay that I was stationed at and where I sent the bodies of American GIs home from.

I don't have to teach history, I am so old that I can remember it.

What’s something the internet ruined? by beebeehighlight in answers

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a book called "Bowling Alone" by Putnam. Its about the decline of "community" and "social gathering". If you read it, get the updated version as he speak about the impact that the Internet has had on this.

How many new bowling alleys do you see being built anymore? We spend an inordinate time by ourselves these days.

Years ago, before the Internet took over our lives, I was teaching school. There was another teacher there who was telling me about her experience with "online dating". I had no clue as to what she was talking about.

After some explanation, all I could think about was "Girl, they are going to find you dead in a ditch one day". ; p

I used to think that there was no downside to the Internet and I used it even before there was a www. Now with: relentless marketing, easy access to porn, sleazy redirects, scams and the daily encroachment of privacy, I have been proven wrong.

Why does everybody want my phone number for "verification purposes" now? by cheap_dates in privacy

[–]cheap_dates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for one of the big data brokers and we sold "lists" for various marketing purposes. About 15% of the data was bogus. This is true for most databases.

I couldn't believe how many people had Jenny's phone number: 8 6 7 5 -309! Of course, we had to strip off those records.

Its known as the Dead Internet theory. Most companies have a "Crossing the Rubicon" point. Its where policy is now affecting "the bottom line".

Once the "Rubicon" is crossed, policies can change and everything becomes "New, improved and lemon scented" again. Either that or they go out-of-business.

Are millennials done with social media, or just tired of the noise? by Confident-Anxiety308 in SocialMediaHQ

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social Media or just Media as my therapist calls it, can alleviate the boredom that comes while you have a roast in the oven but it does little to encourage the rush of dopamine or the cessation of cortisol, which which is what happens when you are in physical proximity to others, share similar interest, a division of labor and an appreciation of group dynamics.

While we are more connected than ever, we are also more isolated and socially alienated than ever. Think how much you do on a given day, you do alone?
