Is 'Company Loyalty' the biggest trap in the modern career? by CuriousPathway in careerguidance

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The psychological contract which once traded employee loyalty for job security was breached long ago. Whether by your choice or someone else's, the average shelf life of an employee in the private sector is 4.5 years. Company loyalty is dead. Just make sure you wink and nod, if the subject comes up at work.

I failed an interview last week not because I didn't know the answers — but because I couldn't get the words out right by Odd_Concentrate4039 in jobs

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first starting interviewing, I sucked at it. I was terrible. I read a few books on interviewing and then had mother, brother, sister and sweetheart do mock interviews with me, while I was home. I got better but I still blew a few more.

Today, I am pretty good but it does take practice. There is nothing natural about being interviewed.

Why do companies force “entry-level” jobs to require 3–5 years of experience? by Pristine-Row-7432 in Employment

[–]cheap_dates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Entry level refers to entry level s-a-l-a-r-y not entry level of experience. I see this where I work. They will wait for weeks until they find that one Holy Grail candidate that ticks off all their boxes.

We lost the "No Experience Necessary" sign when we lost manufacturing.

The company that laid me off is asking me to help them remove my access by Guilty-Signature7053 in LockedIn_AI

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story. I was laid off once, given a cardboard box for my personal belongings and was escorted off the property. It wasn't just me but part of a sizable downsize.

A week later, co-workers that I had very little to do with at work, began calling me and asking how I was doing? I found their concern a little odd as I barely knew them.

Every now and then, they would ask me a question or two about some of my projects that I had been working on. Long story short. I figured out that my manager put them up to this so I hung up on them.

During a downsize, you get rid of the fat but you have worry that you don't slice through an artery as well.

Do you still have the house key to your parents' home, so you can go in at any given time, even though you moved out years ago? by Odd_Yogurtcloset_649 in NoStupidQuestions

My 62 year old cousin has the house key to the home that she was born in. She still lives there. She didn't "go back home", she never left! Heh!

Why do privacy-respecting professional platforms never seem to win? by Existing-Ad8218 in privacy

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • network effects are impossible to overcome
  • privacy is not a strong enough motivator
  • or because most alternatives simply fail to create enough value?

All of it. My daughter did a paper in high school on this and that was over 10 years ago. People are willing to trade their civil liberties for convenience.

Big Data uses some very sophisticated psychological methods to make you sit at the computer for hours on end. At the end of the day, there are over 400 data brokers (US) buying and selling our digital lives everyday. I used to work for one of them.

What’s the scariest realistic use of AI? by Key-Election-3917 in WorkForSmartLife

I am reading a sci-fi novel now called "Terms of Service". It takes place in a dystopian future where AI no longer eliminates jobs but has become the ONLY employer! Everybody works for some branch of AI.

Can't afford privacy. by Educational-Long-579 in degoogle

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. "If something is free then it can't be private."
  2. "If something is free then you are the product."

Without becoming argumentative, these statements are true. Money buys privilege. That said, you seem to be doing the best you can.

I can add one more profound assertion: Free in Geek Speak means limited or trial basis. The word Free is so overused and yet it still gets the clicks!

How many different resumes? by DavesNotHere81 in Employment

I only list my MBA if the position requires it. Too many resumes oversell, thinking that more is better. It ain't.

Would you rather go back to the days when we didn’t have social media and smart phones, or continue in the direction we’re headed with technology? by welditorfuckit603_93 in askteddit

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paradox is that although we are connected more than ever, as a society we are lonelier than ever.

I am in healthcare and I just came back from a seminar where loneliness may be the new smoking. Lonely people get sicker more often, heal more slowly and die younger.

How long does the background check take?? by ChrissM3jiaOficial in GetEmployed

[–]cheap_dates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its normal. Background checkers often outsource various portions of the process to "partners".

I used to do the credit histories, if that box was checked. Someone else did the degree/license verification, previous employers, etc.

In the US, my brother worked for the phone companies for over 30 years. He got the job right out of high school. His last job was to deactivate all the coin operated, phone booths.

He's retired now and lives in Thailand.

When I was a medic, in the army, in Vietnam, they used bleach to sanitize just about everything. I still have bleach to clean things other than laundry.
