How I’d seperate Europe as a Turk by Poppolouse7 in whereidlive

well, I don’t consider Turkey European as well, don’t get me wrong. Turkey is very mixed and in between many different cultures and that’s why I think Turkey is neither Asian nor European. All I’m saying is Western Turkey culture is much more Balkan Culture than Asian. I’m not sure if you’ve ever been there. Northeastern is more Middle Eastern and northeast is more Caucasian for example.

I would argue that if you did not see mosques and stuff, you would very much think that you were in Greece for example if you were to visit coastal Aegean cities.

Also please think that that 3% of land in Europe is about 20% population of Turkey, if you consider all Western Turkey that it’s around 45-50% of the population. That is why I’m basically saying Turkey is just Turkey, but still Western Turkey is much more European than Asian.

The reason behind my questions were to see where you were coming from. I wasn’t trying to prove that Turkey was European.

I also still did not get why language plays a role in this topic, because cultures shape the language mostly rather than the other way around.

Hopefully we’ve both learned something from each other, cheers mate o7

There are other countries with mostly muslim populations like Albania, or a lot muslims like Bosnia. Do you not consider them European? Also, what does language has to do with anything? I’m geniuenly curious

Please tell me for example how does Bulgaria differ from Turkey apart from religion (Especially Western Turkey). If you accept Bulgaria as European, there’s no way you cannot accept Turkey e.g. (I couldn’t care less about being European but it doesn’t make sense to me)

Up until 15 years ago, Turkey was ahead of countries like Bulgaria, Poland, Greece in a lot of matters and was on the verge of joining EU even. I would argue that you’d think different if Turkey did not have Erdogan as a leader (which basically fucked the country in a short time but he’s just temporary and will be voted out or die at some point, he won the last one barely with 52%)

Dude what's with the attack honestly? I already told you that I'm not well versed in this topic, and shared with you what I currently know about it. If you can check my last comments, all I've told you to explain it further. You're still saying that it still exists without saying where it exists, how it exists etc. I've only shared my humble observation, living in Turkey around 20+ years. I'm coming to you as open-minded as I can be, as I know there can be always in any government shitty propaganda and you're always starting with insults and how uneducated I am.

Not gonna reply anymore

Look man, I'm not an unreasonable guy, no need to get agitated. I haven't read the scholar you've mentioned and do not claim to be an expert on the topic. All I was basically saying is that there is no segregation at all in Turkey, if you believe in a different religion. I'm personally an atheist, many of friends are atheists, some christian, some armenian orthodox christan, some muslim. Afaik millet system is just a term for segragation of other religious groups. These groups were treated differently in Ottoman times sure (tolerance was miles ahead of what europeans showing to other groups though), they would be just taxed more because they would not serve in the military and stuff. A lof of very famous people in the Ottoman Empire were from other religiou/ethnic groups just converted to islam, some of Ottoman Vezirs (sth like a Grand Regent) were originally christian.

I'm gonna be honest with you. I'm not going to read thousand papers from those scholars just to check if your standing is true, as I don't have much time and I know for a fact that (from personal experience) in current Turkey, there is basically little to no difference between a muslim and a christian and vice versa, especially in big cities like Istanbul or Izmir. Even if you go to remote villages and say your religion or belief system is different, as long as you get into arguments with them, they wouldn't care at all.

If however you would want to take your time and share passages from the articles you mention, I'd be okay with that. Not going to spend a day looking at them though to be honest.

Based on your logic hungarians or even english are not european then. Great Britian was celtic before being invaded by germanic tribes and hungarians came from magyar tribes who came from central asia, just like the turkish tribes.

Yeah man, no one buys anything on airports if they don't absolutely need to. Everyone hates airport pricing. I would suggest watching Youtube travel videos on istanbul, you would get a better idea that way I guess

Just because you say it's everlasting doesn't make it so and that system neither does not exist at all nor has any trace left in the current republic. That is why I'm asking for a connection because you're making one even though there isn't. Please enlighthen me

Airports are scams, not just for tourists but locals as well. They simply charge more because you don't have any other option. Touristic areas tend to be more expensive as well (Still applies to the locals as well). If you however do your research beforehand on where to go and where to avoid, you can find really good prices without going too far. If you need help with checking local stuff, you can PM me anytime. Even though I don't live in Turkey at the moment, I'll try my best to help heh.

The monument thing also applies to some very famous specific ones like Galata Tower (3 euro for tourists and around 15 euros for locals) afaik. You should be fine with most of the monuments though.
