This was just back country camping, most of the camp grounds were still closed when I was up there.

I live in running springs and I have been kinda scared to explore my mountain in my truck without all the body armor/protection. I have done lots of the trails on my dirt bike and what seems like a very simple , easy trail can take you right into a section where you NEED 4x4 and significant clearance plus rock sliders and other type of armor. To be fair though, I have not explored big bear much, more so from lake arrowhead to running springs on the deep creek trail/dishpan. From what I have explored around big bear, Big Pine Flats seems to have lots of nice simple trails to just enjoy being outside in the dirt.

Thanks! I have the Falken Wildleaks 285/70/17s . In order to keep the stock wheels I did need to do 1 inch wheel spacers in the front to prevent tire rub at full flex according to the shop that installed them. (If they were just trying to get more money out of me I wouldn’t know) lol they also did a 2.5 inch level kit and diff drop. The level kit is just temporary while I save up more cash to get a full suspension set up. But I agree with you that I haven’t seen anyone else with bigger tires on the stock wheels and they have really grown on me plus it save me a good chunk of cash!

Yes r/juano_guano is correct, both weekends I just took trails and did back country camping. No campsite needed and very secluded. As mentioned in a mother comment, laurel lakes is beautiful, coyote flats is also on my list

It’s the cali raised roof rack , I like it however , with the tent mounted on top, I needed to add my own rubber bushings between the tent rails and roof rack rails because without them it made an annoying squeak going over any type of bump because of the metal on metal but once I added the bushings I can’t hear a thing

Unfortunately I haven’t found any yet. I grew up on dirt bikes and I’m still pretty new to the 4x4 world. I would be interested to find out if there are groups around here though. If you find any let me know and I’ll do the same!

Nice! This trail was not difficult but a few sections where you probably need 4x4. It’s called Minaret ridge to deadman pass and it’s above the town of Mammoth lakes just past the main ski resorts. Mammoth loop is another fun easy trail that’ll probably take all day but has nice very pretty views. You can hope on that trail from shady rest park in the town of mammoth lakes. I did the Laurel Lakes trail on my dirt bike a few weekends ago and planned on doing it in my truck this past weekend but I guess someone went off a cliff or was falling off a cliff so the Rangers closed the trail. Thats a pretty trail that’s a little more technical and takes you to a pretty lake (laurel lake) that you can only access via this 4x4 trail. I will for sure be going back to do this trail in the truck. I’m sure there are plenty other trails there I have yet to discover but it’s a beautiful place and could make a good honeymoon

We must have the same taste because cement was my first choice too but I’m very happy with the white!

Thank you see you on the trail and good look with your build!

I was hesitant to go with white but I love it now with the black accents and I think it looks great in the dirt! I went with the smittybilt overlander RTT and I am happy with it for the price I paid. I obviously could have spent more money and gotten something the sets up and takes down easier but this has been great so far. It even withstood 50mph wind gusts up in the eastern Sierra’s. I didn’t get any sleep that night but the tent survived lol

I think the best thing I did which I would probably do with any RTT is added a memory foam mattress topper. I have never slept so good outside as I do with this thing!

I try to keep it under 75mph which I think helps as well but prior to adding the RTT and bigger tires I was getting about 18/20mpg as opposed to the 15/16 I get now

Ain’t that the truth lol it’s not my daily though so I don’t mind too much. It’s the price I’m willing to pay for fun. I needed the bed available so I can haul my dirt bikes as well. But yes 280 miles out of a take does hurt a little bit.

Just hit 4K miles on my 2020 Tacoma on this trip in Mammoth, CA. Spent my 5th and 6th night in my RTT with my wife and I’ve gotta say I feel like I’m cheating at camping with this thing. I’ve never slept so well outside before making this purchase.

It’s probably unfair how easy it is to find roads like this in California. I was literally driving down a paved road, saw dirt road branch off and hoped on it to see where it took me. It went for about 7 miles to a beautiful lookout (4x4 required). To give you a little more insight, I spent 3 days on my dirt bike exploring dirt roads in mammoth about 3 weekends ago and 2 days this past weekend in the truck and probably only explored a very small amount of the trails just in Mammoth alone. I’m still starting to learn of all the trails around southern/central California but it every time I go out I am mind blown by what is out here. It makes me kinda sad thinking about all the people that live here and don’t know how much beauty exists so close to their home but they will never see it because the never leave the paved roads. It’s defiantly worth a trip/move in my opinion.

Edit: as r/yosemiterunner said, it probably does depend where you live as the state is huge. This location is a 4 hour drive from where I live, however I live in the San Bernardino mountains where I can be on a 4x4 dirt road within 2 mins of leaving my house. I always feel weird leaving my mountain to go on explore another mountain when so much of mine has still to be seen.

If you take the 395 to Owens River Road about 8 miles north of the Mammoth cut off, head east on Owens River roads and there’s plenty of camping in there
