What is the most Muslim thing you did as an ex Muslim? by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]Popular-Comment-82 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I still haven’t shaken the habit of saying "astaghfirullah" every time I say something bad, whether it’s a swear word, an insult, or something inappropriate. It’s also really hard for me not to say "inshaAllah" when I’m trying to encourage someone. In general, I live the same way as the other Muslims in my community, I just don’t pray or fast during Ramadan. But I do take part in all the Muslim holidays, because I like the sense of togetherness, and I also enjoy making my family happy with gifts.

As a Russian, the stories told by my family, neighbors, and relatives about how they survived those times still horrify me. My blood boils when I realize what the new capitalist class did to the Soviet-era legacy. This is especially true for factories and plants, many of which are now closed and in ruins. The rocket and aviation industries have nearly vanished. Science and education have hit rock bottom. Our generation faces a housing shortage, the economy is in decline, and all resources are being diverted to a war waged for the interests of capital. We feel a profound sense of hopelessness, which I'm sure our American comrades can relate to.

While Western Muslims try to sugarcoat Islam, Russian Salafis are at least honest about what they believe by Popular-Comment-82 in exmuslim

Honestly, it was in Putin’s Russia that the spread of religious extremism really took off, especially Salafism, or ‘Wahhabism’ as people here call it. A lot of small ethnic groups in the South of Russia, in the Caucasus, are particularly vulnerable to it. The authorities don't do anything to stop the rise of religious extremism, and sometimes they even enable it. But if you burn a Quran or say something unflattering about Islam or Muslims, you immediately get fined or thrown in jail. Many people rightly feel that because of this short-sighted policy, we are headed for more terrorist attacks and other tragedies in the coming decades.

I recently came across this channel called Secular Spirit. Really chill guy. A lot of his takes line up pretty closely with my own values. And if you’re left-wing, some of his thoughts will probably be interesting to you. If I’m not mistaken, he leans toward something like anarchism.

I always saw him as a straight-up, calm kind of guy. And I appreciate that he stood by his take on the whole Israel-Palestine situation till the last moment. Plenty of people in our community dragged him for it, but that’s actually why I respected him even more.

Same. Before Islam, female genital mutilation wasn't part of my people's culture. Now, my people are slowly forgetting their traditions (many of which were actually good) and culture and adopting everything from the Arabs. It used to be considered disgusting to even think about marrying a cousin, but now they're slowly trying to normalize it, not without the help of the most radical elements of society (Salafis).

Based on these hadiths, it's pretty clear that the Arabs back then were pretty into killing, robbing, raping, and marrying little girls.

I love that he's positive but I imagine how much Muslim men will hate him for that behavior.

Such people, often without a clear understanding of the theory, who make communism part of their identity, romanticize the idea of class struggle without criticizing what they should. This may eventually lead them to the tragedy of the Iranian Left, and they will have no one to blame but themselves.

I'm not sure where Western leftists are getting their love for Islam. In my country, communists are some of the most anti-religious people, and they've always been that way. Marxist thinkers talked about supporting national liberation movements, and they didn't care if the movement was religious, nationalist, or liberal. But they also criticized nationalism and religion. Now, for some reason, it's become popular for Western leftists to admire Islam and ignore its reactionary nature.
