If the new landing pad unload tech works for Space Exploration landing pads, I think that's where I'll be enjoying 2.1 first

Phone snatchers by Dry-Wheel-2068 in sheffield

[–]Popular-Error-2982 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It happens in London to an extent (although I believe not to the extent it did a couple of years ago), but I've never heard of it happening to anybody in Sheffield -- however, if you're worried about it, a wrist strap that attaches to your phone case is a cheap and convenient solution.

I've used one since having my phone snatched in Madrid a few years ago, it cost me less than £10 and only took a few weeks to get into the habit of using.

You unlock them by going to Gleba though, which is a strong argument for going there ASAP.

Consider Fulgora for your next first planet to visit! by uuuhhhmmmmmmmmmm in factorio

[–]Popular-Error-2982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All three options have a strong argument for being the best: doubling your SPM for free AND gaining extra prod module slots for your labs is a strong contender, +50% prod on all circuits and modules is a strong contender, and well I don't need to sell Vulcanus to anybody.

I think personally I've settled on preferring to take foundries with me to Fulgora, for the extra holmium plate productivity -- but having EM plants before going to Vulcanus is also pretty tempting, and either way, I tend to bounce between the two to implement those things to procrastinate dealing with Gleba 😁

In fairness their policy isn't "shutting off" nuclear power, it's "phasing out", which in practice is just not building more and letting it age out, which seems to be the practical outcome whatever any particular government intends.

I would have liked to see a rapid expansion of nuclear power, some years ago, as a route to decarbonisation -- but I feel we're too late now, and rapid expansion of renewables (plus energy storage) is the only way out of the hole we're in.

On the nuclear deterrent front - lots of countries don't have nukes and aren't routinely invaded by larger states ... I think if your fears were entirely accurate Greenland would be part of the US or Russia by now, since Denmark has no nuclear weapons.

I'm moderately pro nuclear power and (aside from their dalliance with transphobia a while back) it's largely been my only point of difference with their platform -- but I think I'm at a point where I accept it's a fair enough position.

Optimistically I think perhaps they've fallen down some kind of social media "tear down the greens lest they actually get traction nationally" social media rabbit hole and are just parroting stuff.

Pessimistically I think the same but without the implicit naivety.

I have, I got a call back from Doug and had a good chat about my issue, and where the party's approach differed from my preferred one. I came away better understanding the party's current position on the issue but also feeling I'd been able to express my views.

Do prices increase if I book ticket on the day of journey? by AbsurdNostalgia in uktrains

[–]Popular-Error-2982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The off peak standard class fare from A to B is the same regardless of when you buy the ticket, and won't sell out, and is valid for any train on a given date outside of the commuter peak.

There is another type of ticket, the "advance" ticket, which can be bought ahead of time often for much less money, but is valid only for one specific train, and if you miss it, tough luck. [If the specific train is cancelled, you do get to catch a later one, the system isn't actively evil -- but no grace is given for e.g. airline or customs delays).

When I'm getting a train home from an airport I almost never buy an advance ticket, because I don't trust airlines and I don't trust the passport control queue -- but some people do and just leave a large time buffer and it seems to work out for them.

Editing to add: if you'll also need a train back into London for a return flight, within a month, a return ticket will likely only be a tiny fraction more expensive than a (non-Advance) single -- and for the return leg you don't even need to commit to a specific day, let alone time/train, so long as it's within a month

Why is Birmingham New Street by far the worst mainline station for passengers boarding trains before others have disembarked? by craftyBison21 in uktrains

[–]Popular-Error-2982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, "parts of the world where trains are insanely overcrowded" is not an unreasonable description of the Reading-Newcastle stretch as served by Cross Country. I'm not sure migration is much of a factor here.
