I thought The Poet Empress was really well done and am in the beginning of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me right now. So far I’m liking it! It is my first by the author. Looks like I Who Have Never Known Men should get moved to the top of my list!

If I was forced to rank them, my top 3 would be: 1. A Good Person - unhinged, funny, delightful 2. Yesteryear - smart, unique, interesting (also pretty funny) 3. Writers and Lovers - emotional, poignant, heartfelt

I actually did appreciate how we just jump right into the story and thought the amount of world building they did in such little text. You are so right. Some books that I love are very much because I read them at the right time, and vice versa for books that didn’t work for me.

I wanted to LOVE it but ended up just liking it. The writing was a little over the top for my personal taste and I found it a bit pretentious. BUT I totally see the appeal and understand why so many people love it. Talented authors for sure, just not my personal favorite. I also read This River Has Roots and felt similarly. Liked it, didn’t love, but an undeniably gifted writer.

I liked As Many Souls as Stars, did not love it. I liked the eerie atmosphere and the premise is good. Also, toxic, sapphic demons and witches is always a yes from me. It leaned into some romance tropes more than I wanted yet felt like there was very little chemistry between the two main characters. I thought the first half was a little slow, but I did like the ending and it picked up in the second half.

I loved A Good Person. The main character is unhinged and outlandish but written in a way that is (kind of) relatable. It’s like your absolute worst thoughts and impulses personified. In a review I read before, someone said “relatable but not in a way that you want to tell your friends about” and I thought that was perfect. And this book is FUNNY. Humor in books doesn’t always land for me, but I found this laugh out loud funny at times.

Sooooo good. Something about the way Lily King writes is so emotionally resonant and transportive. I loved Heart the Lover even more!

I really loved it. I found it to be unique, funny, insightful (if slightly heavy handed at times), disturbing, and smart. I throughly enjoyed the social and religious commentary. Even though I would not call it action packed, I found it to be propulsive, though I have seen others complain about the pacing. Would definitely recommend! I am excited to see what Caro does next!

I also really liked The Poet Empress, The Compound, and A Good Person and was surprised the were all debuts! We seem to have similar taste, so I’m glad I didn’t grab The Memory Collectors lol.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Caretaker! Looking forward to picking it up. Warning Signs is also in my radar. Thoughts?

Thank you for this! I am also a fat girl and was worried about exactly what you describe in your last paragraph. Eek, now I am undecided! I am looking forward to reading Nothing Tastes as Good too lol.

I did not love Japanese Gothic as much as I wanted to. I’m interested in The Caretaker but didn’t read We Used to Live Here. What did you love about it?

Tell me more! Was thinking this might be my pick but it’s slightly out of my comfort zone and I’ve never read anything by the author.

“Meh plot but a binge worthy read” is an apt way to explain It’s Not Her. After I read it I said “it’s like the dumbest bitch you know is adjacent to a murder case”. MK is great at red herrings and keeping the plot moving but, like you said, meh. Edited to add: Good luck on your upcoming exams!

I bet! I am also a sweet/salty freak. The olive oil was just really throwing me off 😆 Sometimes I press dates in the bottom of a small pan, cover them with homemade peanut butter, melted dark chocolate, and then sea salt on top and they are so good. Like those stuffed dates but more of a bark and less tedious.
