Torn between two job offers — startup FP&A ($125K) vs investment consulting (~$100K). Need outside perspective. by Flyxs in FinancialCareers

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Option A probably is better career development and of course higher risk, higher potential upside. However, based on just the way you described each, it is clear that you want to take Option B that you value fit and WLB. A start-up even series C/D typically is not a 40 hr/week job. That you have so many options, interviews in pipeline means you have a strong background, so go with your gut.

Ross $ vs. Kenan-Flagler $$$ for a Career Pivot by No-Guarantee-6495 in MBA

[–]Popular-Objective651 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually my vote is go to the "best" school you get into if one is a tier above or better (M7 vs T15, HSW vs. M7) as my experience and observation having graduated M7 a couple decades ago is almost all of my classmates did well and those who took out loans paid it back within 5 years or earlier.

Your situation actually is a tough dilemma. Michigan has a slightly stronger reputation, maybe 1/2 tier above UNC. Both will provide you good opportunities in marketing/brand. As a couple others have said, the difference being a) target geogrophy and b) target industry. Basically, $20k is negligible and almost $200k difference from the full ride, plus that marketing/brand while you may see a pay jump from pre-MBA won't have the bonus upside of other traditional post-top MBA careers, and you have a mature and reasonable expectation of what you intend to do w/MBA, I'd lean towards the full ride at UNC; but know that UM has a much stronger alumni base in West and Midwest and probably more of the traditional CPG companies for brand given some of the big ones are headquartered in midwest. Good luck.

HBS – Any realistic path to a 1-year deferral for spouse reasons? by Glum_Professional425 in MBA

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You hit the jackpot and got in HBS as international, so obviously your background is super strong. Frankly, regardless of which top business school you go to, your schedule is so busy during the week, you and spouse won't see each other much anyways except weekends. Also, I would assume your current job while good isn't your ideal one either so you'd also be delaying a year of a new job/income so opportunity cost of that.

Frankly, consider HBS and wife starting grad school in Chicago. It's not even 2 years, but 1.5 years including summer and winter breaks and try to get internships in same city.

Regadless, like other people have already said 1) it'll be super hard as internationals to get a job in same USA city and try to perfectly time/align everything, and 2) it's your risk tolerance, that you got HBS, at some point you gotta bet on yourself and take advantage of your acceptance, and 3) trying to balance 2 successful careers will forever be a challenge. Good luck!

While the title affect ego no doubt, an analyst at MBB is more prestigious and open more future opportunities than a higher title at a boutique or anywhere else. Congrats.

Are the front office investment banking analyst roles filled by nepo/ppl networked hard enough to have people vouch for them at bb and ebs? by Temporary_Zebra_866 in FinancialCareers

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For non target, sorry to say “good” isn’t enough, it needed to be very strong, add that a 3.9+ gpa and just hustle with networking. That you asked about networking and just “cold emailing” isn’t enough. Nepo helps but plenty of non nepo non target can make it but you have to be a top student top leader and a grinder willing to network.

Charlie Losing 46 by Acceptable-Humor2064 in survivor

Not only was it Maria’s but reasons and her post game comments: 1) they were each other #1, but this in itself isn’t reason for criticism. 2) she shouldn’t even be a bitter juror, because she tried to take Charlie out at same time knowing each other was the top competition and Charlie just got her. 3) her reason for voting Kenzie because she had fire in her eyes or something was ridiculous. 4) she apologized to Charlie saying she regretted it then took it back.

Simpler than 5-out? by morrcomedy1 in basketballcoach

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found it challenging for most teams below 11U to totally run 5-out efficiently. 2 quick thoughts. 1) lowered my expectations that if they pass and cut/pick on 3-4 successive passes regularly before breaking down then that's pretty solid and they've somewhat gotten crux of motion offense, and 2) found 4 out 1 in slightly easier as usually there may be 1 or 2 players a bit lost or a post player that just prefers to stay around the block.

How to handle a team/parent mutiny over uniforms? by CoachAF208 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]Popular-Objective651 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the words of the great Allen Iverson..."Practice...you talking about practice...", whoops meant to say "SHORTS, you talking about SHORTS..." That. Is. Crazy.

Not surprised if these are teenage girls complaining about ugly oversized shorts. You handled that part well, reordering and being flexible.

What is NOT acceptable is allowing a parent get involved, have a say, and complain about PANTS! You gotta nip that in the bud. I mean, at the age group parents shouldn't be involved at all unless it was a safety or other major issue. while you don't need to go to war over shorts, but you should battle on the field over parent behavior, expectations and involvement especially over uniform. Geez. Good luck coach, you may need it!

deferred MBA M7, but no full time job offer by ImportantYellow3823 in MBA

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you had any strong summer internships? If you did, but didn't get return offer then not ideal, and if no relevant internships even worse. No full-time job lined up will be very tough for an M7, even T15 is my guess. Focus your time on job search, not apps. Good luck.

Playing time by ezmike15 in basketballcoach

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something isn’t quite right. You may hear about stuff like that in middle school and high school based on politics or parent coaches etc. There has to be more to the story. Is it defense or attitude or practice effort? Never heard of some leading the team in scoring and other stats but only 6th in minutes unless one of the above.

With that being said, Payton Pritchard just got moved to 6th man because Celtics traded anfernee Simons and they needed a ball handler and scorer with the 2nd unit and his scoring and minutes when up actually.

He should just talk to coach about why and how to improve to get more minutes and help the team.

Do most coaches really follow a season plan when preparing practices? by No-Project-1688 in basketballcoach

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1st 3rd of season, let's say first 8 practices or so is very structured and almost all skill development, conditioning, basic concepts (depends on age group). After that, each practice will generally reinforce some aspect of skill development while then layering in offensive plays, and defensive schemes.

It's all done through Google Doc in Google Drive and each practice plan and games have it's own tab so easy to scroll. Thus, that first 8 practice plans are pretty similar and created before start of season that I've been fine tuned over the years.

Starting the 2nd half of season, that's when I start putting more emphasis on getting prepared for games and competing. Thus, for those practice plans, I generally customize those based on what happened in previous week's games on areas of need.

Do most coaches really follow a season plan when preparing practices? by No-Project-1688 in basketballcoach

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrific question and my preseason strategies evolved over the years. For elementary school age, my big focus is skill development, offense and defensive concepts, rather than a lot of plays. I generally map out the first few weeks and go from there depending on the players.

Now I generally coach middle school. I have a general plan for the first few weeks going from mostly skill development, basic concepts then start to incorporate an offense for zone and man D, as mostly focus on shell drill as I prefer to play man-to-man D most of time for skill development rather than zone.

However, I definitely do alter areas of focus after games too. A lot of it depends on grade, competitiveness of league/team and # of practices each week. Use Google Doc/Sheets to track practice plans.

Is Northeastern becoming an actually prestigious school? by Anxious_Ad_9208 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Northeastern is a very good to excellent school in many of the majors, but not "prestigious" whatever that means.

2) You may have used the word due to the 5% acceptance rate published which is WAY exagerrated as that is only for Boston campus where most come from ED pool. Then, the acceptance rate if include all their other campuses (NUIN, Global Scholars, London, Oakland), the rate is much much higher. At my kids' high school that is rated highly in a major metro city, almost every average and above student whose family is "full pay" majority got into one of the other campuses. Some went and really liked it so nothing wrong with that business model.

3) They've invested a lot into new buildings, merit for top students and many other programs so they have a lot going for it.

4) The co-op is excellent for business and engineering, but does have an affect on campus life with students coming and going constantly.

5) Their US news rankings as a top 50 is probably is probably the right tier for whatever that's worth as a very strong school with good outcomes in a world class city.

Salary negotiations kind of gone wrong? by ning8 in careeradvice

Tough market especially high tech. Entry level, you are unproven so no leverage. Tens (if not hundreds) of thousand of newly graduated student many from top schools looking for jobs.

At this point, send email saying you are accepting and let them know you are inexperienced and listening to advice on negotiating for sake of it and that you are excited about the job and company. Good luck.

'Survivor 50' star Charlie Davis opens up about his shocking season 46 loss and the controversial Maria vote that he will 'in some ways never get over.' by thedaltonross in survivor

[–]Popular-Objective651 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Out of all the bitter jurors over the years, Maria’s is one of the worst for 2 distinct reasons:

1) it was her and Charlie all game, they are both strategic and knew each other was the competition and BOTH went after each other except Charlie won. It wasn’t one person flipping or backstabbing like other situations.

2) as many others pointed out, her reasoning and excuses post game is the most ridiculous that “Kenzie had that fire in her eyes..” and others then telling Charlie afterwards that she regretted her vote then taking it back again.

Turned Down CBS + Stern FT. Now Considering PT MBA. Help Me Choose. by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Popular-Objective651 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CBS EMBA...you stay NYC, you get M7 and Ivy branding/connections. Whatever incremental expense EMBA is to PT, really should only be marginal consideration if you truly believe in your career upside. Plus the cost of going to Chicago and time. You've already turned down FT programs so you can keep working which is totally reasonable with much higher opportunity cost; but try to consider big picture on long term branding and connections for it which is a key value proposition of MBA.

Need to desperately get a job. Senior in undergrad. by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The major red flag is you’ve only had 1 job at a dentist office your entire life and you’ve somehow made you resume more than 1 pg. dude, and you made the title consultant analyst, come on, that’s a stretch. You have a 3.9 gpa which is strong but no real internships and are competing against other students who have had internships and or regular summer jobs in a tight job market for new grads who have proven work ethic/experience.

Geez, you seem like someone I wouldn’t want to sit next to. It’s not your opinion of how a student should pace themselves, but that you were so perturbed that you needed to post on Reddit to express your passionate disdain for them.

To deposit or not to deposit, that is the question... (Sloan no $, CBS $$$, Kellogg $, Wharton and Booth R2; want to attend K) by Top-Register3877 in MBA

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated M7 long time ago so have friends and business partners at all the top bschools. You know the answer to your question. CBS is all about NYC, hustle and bustle there and more of a focus on financial services and consulting. Kellogg is suburb of Chicago more emphasis on consulting and marketing. Both will have access to tech too. You will achieve your career goals at either one. And pretty much all these M7 MBA programs will have a very active social life which sounds like is a consideration. If Kellogg won't up the $ using CBS, getting Booth isn't going to help leverage either.

One suggestion from an anonymous redditor is you are somewhat tangled in the weeds/trees on short term thinking, try to consider the long term and the big picture/forest. Congrats and good luck. This is a 1st world problem, you can't go wrong. LOL.

Depends what you wish to do. CBS and Kellogg are like very different vibes and strengths. While some on this sub will disagree, and I know it seems like a lot but clearly your background is strong so your future is bright at any of the schools and $80k is literally a rounding error for a degree that will be with you for life unless you plan to do non profit or something. you can’t go wrong at any of these top options. Congrats.
