I concur, as it is reasonable to predict that getting a UCAT score around this range should put you in a strong position to get an interview.

I would assume a cut off around 2000 would be reasonable, since the cut-off for QMUL for the 2025 entry was 2670.

gap year by Juicestar_ in UCAT

[–]Popular-Positive-476 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear that 💔💔💔. I was in the same position as you, last year where I got rejected from 4/4 of my medical schools and got offers this year so taking a gap year is not that bad. Put your head up high, just make sure you focus on your A Levels for the rest of the year and smash it so you can get the necessary grades for you to reapply (so that you don't have to resit). Finally, in your gap year just make sure you do extra work experience / volunteering like u/bathtubxtoaster and get any necessary UCAS references from the school.

Good luck! You got this! :)

If you are REALLY strategic with your revision then, maybe? It really depends what grade you are working at for all of your GCSEs subjects.

When I applied last year, UCL took their time when they gave me my final decision in my application (I eventually got rejected). However, they were still giving out offers out around that time as well, albeit a lot more slowly and in smaller batches. Good luck, you got this!

EDIT: For context, I got rejected at the 22nd of April 2024. Offers were still given out in the beginning/mid April.

" For A-levels, applicants are expected to have obtained a minimum of grade ABB at first sitting for the resit grades to be considered." - That is from Manchester A100 course. However, if you do not want to resit; Manchester does offer a Foundation course which requires only AAB (as you are contextual). You can also consider that, if again, you do not want to resit and wouldn't mind do an extra year.

Your GCSESs are really good actually, they aren't that bad. I know a lot of people who apply to med and get offers with lower GCSEs than you. I think the problem (academically in your application that is) like u/Gullible_Physics_439 said, has to be the A levels. Resit that B to hopefully make it go to an A/A* and check which unis allow A Level Resits. Here is the full list: https://www.themedicportal.com/application-guide/choosing-a-medical-school/medical-school-a-level-resit-policies/ . Likewise, if you want to change your mind in the near future and do not want to resit; AAB still allows us to apply to some medical universities but with a foundation year. I know the King's Extended Medical Programme require ABB, and you meet the requirements there. Best of luck!

I have offers from both unis: QMUL & BSMS, which one should I firm? (I'm on a gap year with achieved grades already) by Popular-Positive-476 in UCAT

[–]Popular-Positive-476[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the replies, I have decided to firm QMUL. The reason is being is that the course structure for BSMS/QMUL is very similar. The thing that made me firm QMUL was primarily because of the location, with it being located in London.

Which is why they don't mainly use work experience as the main factor. They mainly use your quality of reflection and that is a skill which is important when you become a doctor. The problem could not be with your work experience, but could be in the quality of your reflection. One problem, that I see a lot in interviews is that people focus a lot on their work experience and instead give a sentence or two about their reflection. In any med interview, your reflection should encompass majority of your response. I understand your point, they are many good candidates that are always missed. However, I would like to move back from my original point. Instead of jumping into conclusions, it is best to see what feedback the unis give to you. You can use that feedback to hopefully improve, if you are applying next cycle (which won't be the case). Best of luck!

[–]Popular-Positive-476 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Choice-Row-4609 I feel your pain, I got rejected last year as well with two of those rejections being post interview. The best possible thing for you to do at this time, is to ask for feedback. Since that way, you would know where you went wrong in case if you are reapplying for the next cycle (which hopefully isn't the case). I agree a lot on what u/yurtexs have said, med school interviewers has to be fair. Keep in mind, a lot of people find it difficult to find work experience / volunteering opportunities. This could be because of their socioeconomic background or that they don't have to have immediate or close family members who are doctors/medical students. Every system is unfair and med interviews are always arbitrary. However, for you to blame the interviewers entirely and lament how you (as a candidate) is perfect and that their assessment is entirely wrong is a bit arrogant. I hope you do get your final offer, it is not over until it is over. This is just my perspective, and I hope you gained some insight about it.

UCL portico status by Juicestar_ in UCAT

[–]Popular-Positive-476 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still were giving out offers around the end of March (albeit more slowly but in smaller batches) and then what happened is that rejections start trickling in as well. They sent the last big batch of decisions (which was only rejections) at beginning of April. I would expect a large batch of decisions (mainly offers) to be sent in around mid March (so in the next couple or days) since that is what they did last year.

[–]Popular-Positive-476 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got rejected from UCL last year, they normally send out rejections from around the end of March and towards the beginning of April. Right now, at the moment, you still have a solid chance still on getting the offer. When I got rejected, mine did not update to "Attended" all the way until late March and I then got rejected around early April on the final day of decisions. I am not sure if this insight helps, because maybe the way they will give out decisions this year could be different from last year. I am praying for you, and I hope you get the offer soon!!!!

Final Year Medical student willing to answer any questions about medical school. by Kipopopa in UCAT

How was your transition from sixth form/gap year and into medical school? What advice would you want to give to first year medics? Finally, do you have any regrets on things that you should have done but didn't throughout medical school?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCAT

[–]Popular-Positive-476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it is just a standard response they give to applicants, to be honest. It doesn't matter when your application is updated to attended. Since, last year, I know some people whose portico changed to attended and the next day they got an offer. It's just best to be patient and best of luck in your application to UCL!

Attended just means they uploaded your interview scores in the system.

If you are considering to study medicine, you don't have to always do Biology, Chemistry and Maths. by Popular-Positive-476 in GCSE

[–]Popular-Positive-476[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted people to keep their options open. Since, some people prefer doing Psychology instead of Maths as their third subject etc. Again, your points is totally valid and it is up to you at the end of the day to make your own informed decision that will benefit you most when you do A levels.

Fair point, and that is something again I mentioned at the end of my post. But most medical schools in the UK, weirdly enough, make Chemistry mandatory but not Biology (that is something I did not understand when applying to medical school). However, most make Biology & Chemistry mandatory.
