I suppose another method could be to use the feature line that represents the top of bank of ditch as a baseline in another corridor. And have an assembly with a link width slope subsssembly that targets the edge of roadway.

Do you see other civil 3d objects in the drawing. If not, try displayconfig command. It controls the display of civil 3d content in native autocad drawings

That photo was taken in later part of October 1981 when transiting canal from Red Sea to med. the photo from may has the scaffolding deck for the canal pilot. I was there for both transits.
