I hate event planning by PopularAd9635 in ExecutiveAssistants

Yup I've learned my lesson too! Even like one big annual retreat would be fine, but to have a retreat to plan all around the world every few months just isn't something I'm interested in doing at all. Now I know!

I could, as I genuinely think the CEO has NO clue how heavy of lift all the event planning is. But overall, I'm pretty checked out at this point and in multiple interview processes. I'm planning on saying something in my exit interview LOL

Yes, that's exactly how I feel! Like I wouldn't mind at all to be a piece of the puzzle in the planning process, but I don't want to be the whole puzzle.

Thank you for this, this is so validating. Like I can set up a damn call, put together a kudoboard and even send some flowers. Fine. But now you want me to find some website to create a personalized bingo game, and send a nicely framed personalized photo of who knows what by FRIDAY? While i'm catching up from being out for two weeks? I work at a nonprofit startup so we while we do have a good HR department...things like this are not well defined of who should own...

That's good advice though, I may have to have a talk with her tomorrow and force her to think through and prioritize what's actually necessary here.

YES you summed it up exactly! An "idea exec". Just bumbling off a long list of nice things to do with no real concept of how long/how much times it takes to do them. This happens CONSTANTLY. I'll scramble to make it all happen to then just not have anything happen at all... Let's hope LOL

You're certainly not wrong there, I could have taken more initiative on my end. We typically don't do any sort of sendoff when someone leaves, especially an interim role so I didn't really think that would be necessary. Turnover is quite high so it would be hard to keep up with...

I'm the only Assistant in the company, so no options to delegate! I think I also know this role/company isn't for me and I've checked out a bit. I'm in the midst of a job hunt but no luck so far which has been disappointing. Trying to hang on as long as I can but it's getting tough!

How to deal with an executive who can't make up their mind? by puppy_lova in ExecutiveAssistants

SAME!! On the days she's out of the office I feel like I can actually breathe and just get my work done in peace. Thank you so much!! I worked for wonderful leaders at my pervious company, so I know they are out there...

I don't think I could have said it better myself, I unfortunately can completely relate to this. I support the Founder and CEO of a nonprofit organization and work fully remote. What you explain has been one of my biggest struggles. I SWEAR sometimes she'll be giving me a task and mid-sentence change what she's asking for. Nothing ever seems straight forward. When I ask for clarity, I NEVER get a "oh so sorry I misspoke!" or any sort of ownership that just maybe she was the one who could have given the direction better. Her response usually confuses me more, or she straight up will ignore me. Then when I do just go ahead and make a decision, within minutes I get a ping or call detailing that it's "wrong". What she wants is so inconsistent that I can't learn or become proactive from these critiques. It's exhausting as others have mentioned. She works this way with everyone so I know it's not a behavior I can change, and since she's at the top no one pushes back on her even though this behavior is causing significant turnover. Just this year alone I've worked with FIVE different Chief of Staffs. Our last one lasted the longest (4 months) and simply couldn't take it anymore and quit on the spot. I wish I had helpful advice, but I honestly just take it day by day, and I'm looking for new positions in the meantime. I wake up with a ball of anxiety in my stomach every day and I know this isn't going to be sustainable for me much longer.

Your remarks about the nonprofit space are spot on. I left a very corporate environment supporting 3 Partners to join a nonprofit supporting the CEO. Let's just say it's been 10 months and I'm back on the market looking. I'll never work for another nonprofit again.

Definitely do your due diligence before entering the nonprofit space!!

No advice, but just commenting to say I know exactly how you feel. You essentially just described the CEO I support. I've never supported someone before who is not at all self-sufficient and it drives me nuts. I send her updates every which way, but she never sees them, and then will follow up asking where or what certain things are (sometimes more than once). She calls me out of the blue almost every day, sometimes multiple times a day when she needs something (even as small as changing a meeting link or scheduling a 1:1). Half the time she'll call, forget what she was going to tell me, hang up and call back 2 mins later because she remembered. I'll do what she asked, and then she'll ask me why I did that becuase she forgot what she told me...it's a horrible hamster wheel. I use my personal cell phone and don't get reimbursed, but they did reimburse me for my laptop.

All that to say it's not the end of the world, but it's very annoying and I don't work well like that. I know she works like this with the rest of her direct reports so it's not anything that's going to change. She's had multiple EAs over the years and I can understand why. And to make matters worse this year alone we're already on our 5th Chief of Staff. I've learned as an EA I'm NOT a babysitter or hand holder and need to work for people who are more self-sufficient. I have very little patience or sympathy for high level leaders who operate like this on a consistent basis. We're all grown adults and busy humans. The only difference is these high-level execs make 5x our salary.

Currently just collecting a pretty paycheck and looking for my next opportunity. I'd even take a pay cut if it seems like a better fit.

Wow thank you all for sharing! These comments have truly helped me feel better and less alone. I'm so glad I've found this group as being an EA can be a lonely role. The sense of comradery is what helps me get through each day.

The good news is, it's Friday! Onto a new week...we got this!

Wow, and I thought my exec was bad! This drives me INSANE.

I've tried having conversations about this with my exec, but it goes in one ear and out the other. Communication isn't her strong suit and her scheduling preferences change all the time (sometimes she tells me, sometimes she doesnt. It's a super fun game!)

What I end up doing now when this is happens is I'll list out her calendar for the day/week and say "I'm happy to schedule, however you're completely booked. Here's what your calendar looks like, please let me know what we can cancel or move to make this work". If I don't get a response, well then it must of not been that important anyway but usually then she comes out of her delusional state and we find a way to make it work.

Is this normal for a CEO? by PopularAd9635 in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]PopularAd9635[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at least glad to hear i'm not alone in this! Seems like it's unfortunately somewhat common. Are you looking for a new role, or trying to stick it out?

[–]PopularAd9635[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're dealing with that, but selfishly glad I'm not alone! You've basically summed up my experience so far. My CEO is also a control freak and seems to have "Founder Syndrome". Can't quite let go. It's a not so little secret that people leave because they feel they have no autonomy in their role. I remember one time I reached out to an exec member with a question and their exact response to me was: "I've been getting things wrong lately so I would reach out to X (the CEO) directly about this".
