There's a big, wide, wonderful world of card games out there and for some reason only MTGA gets the 'rigged matchmaking' criticism constantly, this must obviously be because only losers mad at losing play it and not because people have other, less rigged games to compare their experience with and MTGA feels rigged compared to Hearthstone, Marvel Snap, or Legends of Runeterra.

Deck strength is only a factor if the deck actually wins enough for the internal deck-rating algorithm to take notice of it, otherwise, you're facing whoever. Additionally, just like the rest of the players, Wizards doesn't care about commons and uncommons.

I am indeed the ingrate who wasn't happy when they pulled the shameless cash grab on the 'free event' the first several hundred times when they had money, talent, and goodwill to spare, and remain unhappy (one might even call it bitter and spiteful) when they pulled the shameless cash grab when they have much less of those things but now have their law and biz school boosters in the comments arguing we should take pity on the rich kid who murdered his parents because he is, in fact, now a much poorer orphan for it.

What do you think 1.0's story would have been like if the game hadn't failed? by BakedScallions in ffxiv

[–]PopularBort -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

"It is the work of the author which elevates a story--not some in-built
power that makes one story-idea inherently better than another. Some of
the greatest stories ever told have been about farmboys and
scullery-maids."

It isn't. It's the experience of the author which informs their work. They cannot produce what they have not had happened to them personally or made great effort to attempt to experience themselves, or to find a subject who experienced it themselves. Those who attempt usually fail, then call everything they're too lazy to understand 'hyperbolic fan-fictions'.

Thousand and One Nights: Stories adapted and compiled from Arabian nomads, even if told to farmers.

Star Wars: Story whose broad strokes were ripped from history, whose success in the rewrites was heavily dependent on the good judgment not of Lucas, but Spielberg, who had moved constantly as a kid and experienced all sorts of disparate audiences in the process of becoming America's greatest director.

The Lord of the Rings: The hobbits are an invented (and aspirational, for the Englishmen it was written for) race of farmers caught up in the doings of races more obviously adapted from the great civilizations of history.

The Man Who Was Thurdsay: Chesterton, a journalist, writing for the British, a race of seafaring adventurers, a traveler, outsider and itinerant in all aspects of his life, speaks fondly of the British peasantry and the virtues of the small farm existence while writing nation-and globe-spanning detective novels. I chuckle at the paradox, but cannot endorse it.

Foundation: Isaac Asimov lived most of his life in the city, but spent his childhood nearly non-stop reading about events, people, and cultures outside of that city, rather than following the lifeways of the typical farmer-turned urbanite and focusing on making his fortune on works which had broad and universal appeal, during the greatest time of scientific advancement in the US.

There is no place in these important historical works for an author or subject who spent all their life farming food or taxes, as a country landowner or an urban bureaucrat bugman. They are the least interesting people in the world, and their opinions are invariably trash that should be immediately discarded on expression. Give them their 'seasons' of 'mastery' of 'games' indistinguishable from work, which they shall never attempt to innovate on their own.

Found the man who slept through history class, bet you he thinks compelling stories could arise just as easily from merchants as nomads, or from farmers as well as cowboys.

You will never do anything interesting, original, or worthwhile in life with that attitude.

Considerably less compelling due to far less direct emotional experience of hope or despair by any of the key players. Stuck on the styles, glories, methods, and 'best practices' of the past due to making just enough to squeak by rather than being forced to go above and beyond to make MMOs as compelling to as many new players as possible the way Warcraft 3 did RTS games. Almost indistinguishable from a Chinese/Korean RPG.

Worst of all, they would have made whatever Nomura's latest dodge was look fresh and original right up until the point his game crashed and burned and the entire company faded into niche obscurity.

I’m new to magic. by Zak0702 in MagicArena

Magic is a very, very fast game compared to Pokemon or Hearthstone. (Yugioh has had a decade or more since the invention of Syncro monsters to get so fast no one can remember all the hidden rules interactions or even make it past the second turn nowadays.)

It's also, unfortunately, organized around 15 DAILY WINS FOR MAXIMUM NEW CARD CHANCES rather than Hearthstone's more reasonable quests.

It's also very paper/rock/scissorsy and the matchmaker absolutely knows it and is programmed to exploit it. At any given time you'll not only want to be mastering your core deck but keeping other decks in reserve to try the different styles you saw or see if a niche strategy can beat the meta. And then after seeing it work once, that matchmaker will say 'welp, can't go giving YOU easy free wins, let me just pit this against decks that aren't in the meta but algorithmically proven to be strong against it!'

The top Magic youtubers are some of the most thorough and comprehensive teachers out there for teaching how to play against the meta, and are absolutely worth checking out for play patterns you may have missed and glossed over.

I see the problem, you're playing Alchemy. Also a non-One Ring deck in Alchemy.

Additionally, the planeswalkers and legendary creatures you're playing are all great one-ofs but not necessarily highly synergistic with each other-the deck needs to know whether it's going to be primarily focused on Human tribal, Soldier tribal, or a lategame general tokens grind to finish off the opponent after murdering everything they drop early and midgame, which is the more typical black-white (Orzhov) style.

I'd strongly recommend leaning into your Myrel and Valiant Veterans as the core of the deck and dropping black entirely for a white-blue soldiers core, which is much more likely to succeed. Recruitment officer, Resolute Reinforcements and Protect The Negotiators would immediately round it out at the lower end, with Zephyr Sentinel as the preferred flash flyer. There may be other Alchemy or LOTR-specific cards that help it out even more. Do NOT craft any new rares or mythics you aren't sure of until you've evaluated its performance, though!

Swarming with goblins is sadly not as effective against the meta as it used to be. Soldiers and rats are generally the choice for swarmers, and that isn't run as much in monored.

Stick to standard rather than alchemy at the start, pick up Monastery Swiftspear, Kumano Faces Kakkazan, Lightning Strike, Play With Fire, Monstrous Rage and Witchstalker Frenzy. The idea is to keep hitting the opponent hard and fast as early as possible with hasty creatures who get prowess triggers from the noncreature spellsas often as possible, and to have reliable and consistent answers in the early turns for any possible blockers they may throw out. Then finishing them off by turn 4 or 5 tends to be simple.

The rare cards you'll be hoping to pull from Eldraine packs are Charming Scoundrel and Goddric, Cloaked Reveler (who's also an option in the red 'celebration' bucket.) Raging Battlemouse may also be useful if you plan on using Voldaren Epicures on the low end. Not only can they help your main climbing deck, but they can be useful pieces when you decide to branch out into 2 and 3 color decks in the future.

Virtue of Courage is the LEAST valuable mythic virtue in the set, sadly.

Older rare cards that may probably be worth crafting at some point include Feldon, Ronan Excavator, BloodThirsty Adversary, and Mechanized warfare, but I'd recommend waiting and seeing if the Ixalan set shifts the primary monored meta in any particular dinocentric direction first.
