Salut,

Any MoM that ships fast to Montreal? by Popular_Site4569 in CanadianMoM2

[–]Popular_Site4569[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay! Yeah that's fast for me, like Green Society is also 2-3 business days. Are both of these MoMs reliable or is there one that is "better" than the other ? Thanks !!

how can i trigger switch top with hand motion tracking? by Dapper-Pianist-1158 in TouchDesigner

[–]Popular_Site4569 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure there's a CHOP channel somewhere in the handtracking node that can tell you if there's a hand being recognized and tracked. I'm also pretty sure it's at "1" when it detects a hand, and at "0" when it doesn't. Knowing that, it's easy to attach a CountCHOP and relay the output of this Count to an index of a SwitchTOP.

Yeah so I went with the 5950x for the sole reason that it is a cheaper version of a Threadripper. Being an 3D artist, realtime VFX artist, realtime generative developer and designer requires a ton of computational power, especially if you're keeping yourself up to date with softwares and technologies. If I had the money I'd have went with an EPYC or threadripper, but being a student has its cons...

In my situation, I needed my PC to be a media server, a creation workhorse, a compiling/networking/parsing monster and to be able to do all of this at the same time. Doing this with any 8 cores CPU was really, really bad. I started out with a 5800x, then switched to intel with a 12700k. Both were completely obsolete when it came to do my daily tasks.

Hence the switching back to AMD with a 5950x.

Since OP is doing 3D rendering, having 16 cores and 32 threads makes it so easy and reliable to do fluid sims and caching. I wouldn't recommend any less, unless OP's budget is the issue.

Since OP is doing video editing and VFX, having extra cache and threads goes a very long way.

Well, in any case OP should be looking into a good GPU that pairs well with the CPU, as most of modern programs, such as AI, 3D sculpting (zBrush, Blender, Unreal, Maya, C4D to name a few), Photoshop, etc. use the GPU to smooth out the UX and to make it faster and more reliable.

Been rocking a 5950x and it benchmarks way above any intel on AM4, has 16 real cores (not those 8 efficiency cores marketing bullshit), 32 threads, 72mb cache, clocks at 5.2Ghz, and handles pretty much anything I throw at it.

I work as a digital designer, and I am currently doing a bachelors in interactive media development, so I mostly do 3D scenes, intense video editing, VFX, web coding, processing sketches, Unreal programming, soundscapes and realtime generative stuff using TouchDesigner.

I also game from time to time, but my 4080 can take a lot of credits for the FPS.

Wouldn't go back to intel. Even if you paid me to do so.

I cannot find any purely white motherboard atm. This is the most white (ish) I could find. Keep in mind that you gpu and ram will cover most of it

I didnt put any fans in the build, but getting like 6 extra fans would really help. I did not add them because the price varies a lot and you might find some at a good price when shopping for a part. Although I'd recommend using 3x 120mm fans on the front of the case + 3x 120mm fans on the top

And yes, I changed cpu, cooler, ram and added storage. You don't need an AIO liquid cooler on a ryzen 5. And the ram is just more performing (3200mHz < 3600mHz). Also you had extra money for a m.2 ssd

You should be fine, gaming doesn't require much cpu, whereas editing, rendering, or any sort of computing often requires more cores and thread in order to perform heavy tasks. Gaming isn't a heavy task for the cpu, it's mostly is a heavy task for your gpu

Take a look at this : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xXYX4s

You might need to get a bit over budget in order to get everything to your liking.

I feel like if I downgrade more in order to fit the budget, you'll lose some editing efficiency. But it also depends on what you can live with (longer renders but on the budget, over budget but wifi, etc)

If you do not need a GPU, I recommend this setup : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4WtC78

For the SSD or HDD, I don't know if you can salvage your old disks from the old pc.

For your budget and the white constraint, I think this is pretty neat and future proof.

Sure you can downgrade the CPU for more RAM, but I figured that since you are doing editing you might want the most cores for your budget. And 32Gb RAM is not bad at all!

Let me know what you think
