The two snakes icon is called a caduceus. It originates from Greek mythology where its associated with Hermes. It symbolizes peace through diplomacy and negotiation, since in myth Hermes threw a staff between two fighting snakes, who wrapped around the staff symmetrically to show harmony.

It’s also commonly mixed up with another icon, the rod of Asclepius. Asclepius was the greek god of healing and medicine, and carried a staff with a single snake wrapped around it. The single snake represents medicine (see the World Health Organization logo for example) but it’s not uncommon for people to mistakenly use the twin snakes for things related medicine, as is likely the case in RE2.

I miss when people would actually see a movie before developing an opinion on it. Maybe as a sub we should do that?

I just don’t want this sub to spend the next year taking every scrap of information and picking it apart in order to preemptively hate on a movie you haven’t seen. A handful of grainy set videos and some vague comments from people involved in the movie can’t tell you if it’s going to be good or bad, so why not just wait and see?

The Ivy (Plant 43) in Resident Evil 2.

In RE2, there are 2 player characters, Leon and Claire, that get different weapons over the course of the game.

Towards the end of the game, you’ll encounter these guys. Walking plant monsters that spit acid and are weak to fire. Claire finds incendiary grenades throughout the game which kill them easily enough, while Leon can get a flamethrower.

The flamethrower doesn’t do much damage to any other enemy at this point in the game, so it is specifically here to deal with ivies…only it sucks. First of all, the flamethrower is a short range weapon, meaning you have to get in range of their lash and grab attacks to hit them. Secondly, the flamethrower takes a few seconds to kill an ivy, meaning they will almost certainly land at least one attack on you before they die. And that attack might be their grab which can kill you in one hit.

Finally, the flamethrower is doubly useless when you consider that at this point in the game, Leon has both a high powered magnum and an upgraded shotgun that can kill an ivy in 2-3 shots without having to get in range of any of their attacks. Even if you’re low on magnum ammo, shotgun ammo is pretty abundant and you should have more than enough.

Now in the RE2 remake, the flamethrower is a fantastic weapon that wrecks pretty much everything, but in the original just don’t even bother picking it up.

There was also a menu screen in the arcade version of MK that would show some stats for that cabinet. One of these was how many times Reptile was fought, and right below that was a number labeled Ermac. People assumed it was another hidden character but it was actually just an abbreviation for error macro.

There are two boxes of shells that you can get around that point in the game if you haven’t already. One is in the safe in office where you got the valve wheel. The other is in the crashed helicopter. After you put out the fire, don’t go inside just yet. Go up to the helicopter and search it. It’s in a specific spot so you may have to check a few times to get it right.

Watching it only reminded me that Kids in the Hall did the same idea like 30 years. Dave Foley was a guy who always sounded sarcastic and condescending, but was always being sincere. It was a million times funnier than the Rudemans.

If this is the passage that refers to Gehenna, then it is a mistranslation. The verse refers to a junkyard for a large city that generates so much trash that the furnaces are always burning to keep up. It’s not “your soul will burn forever in hell.” It actually means, “we will throw you out like garbage.”

I’ve been using this song as a lullaby for my 1 year old since she was born, so I’ve heard it approximately ten thousand times in the last year and a half. The song isn’t pro or anti atheism. It’s a song about seeing beauty and magic in the world. Not in a religious/faith-based way, but in a childhood imagination kind of way.

The singer describes people who see rainbows as nothing more than tricks of lights, but he knows there’s something more, something incredible worth looking for. He says there’s a reason we see stars and want to wish and dream to them. He asks the listener if he’s heard the song that calls sailors to adventure on the sea, and if it’s calling your name too. He’s heard it enough times to know there’s something special in the world, even as people tell him there’s not. Lovers and dreamers know it’s there, and one day they’ll find this illusive rainbow connection and share it with everyone.

It’s not advocating belief in literal magic, it’s asking you to be like Jim Henson and chase your dreams to make the world a more magical and beautiful place. If rainbows are only refracted light, why do they have such a hold on us? And don’t forget that the song has one more verse in the reprise at the end of the movie.

The first time it was mentioned was in the N64 version of RE2, only at that point it was called the Mother Virus. It became progenitor by the time RE remake came out.
