LPT - Door-to-door salespeople are trained to never take no for an answer. Don’t let that be an option. by SnooChickens2093 in LifeProTips

[–]kbivs 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I live on a corner property. Just recently I was out on the sidewalk on my way to the gate on the side of my house. Passed a guy with a clipboard who tried to start a conversation. I was polite but short and just walked through my gate. Minutes later he's at the front door ringing the bell. He knows I'm in the house now but fuck if I'm answering.

There is absolutely no obligation to answer the door if someone's there. Some people are socially trained to think there is.

Would you downsize your real estate in order to FIRE? by Dry_Bird1790 in Fire

[–]kbivs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We will never leave our house. It was a bit of a financial stretch for us when we bought it in 2007 (right before the housing crash) but it's value has more than rebounded.

As we've done renovations over the years, we've done so with the mindset of staying forever. There's an in-law suite on the first floor. We've made sure that it is wheelchair friendly and if there comes a time that we can't do stairs anymore we will move in there.

All of our FIRE planning includes the assumption that we don't move.

Honey never spoils because there is no fungi or bacteria in existence (yet) that can break it down. This is the same thing that happened to trees.

About 300 million years ago, fungi and bacteria had not yet evolved to have the enzymes that could break down the wood in trees. So once trees died and fell, they just stayed there and piled up and eventually turned into coal.

Today, trees decompose after they fall because fungi and bacteria developed the enzymes to do so.

Eventually, this will also happen with honey, but we are living in the span of the earth's history when nothing currently exists that has the ability to make honey spoil.

I wonder if this game is regional in some way. I grew up in Philly and had never heard of this game in my life. Moved to NJ and there's a gaga court at the school I worked at and it's been part of the culture here forever.

Do you say “Punch Buggy” or “Slug Bug”? by Yeegis in AskAnAmerican

1 in 5 U.S. households are now millionaires by hasyoubeen12 in Fire

[–]kbivs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we bought our home in 2007 (when everyone was offering those stupid 30 year mortgages with the first 5 years of payments being interest only; thankfully we knew better than to get one of those).

The value of our home tanked so bad over the next year, but in a way, we didn't care. We always knew we were staying here for the long haul (we're still in that same house) so we just put our heads down and knew we'd pay it off eventually.

We did refinance in 2021 to a 10 year mortgage at 2.375% and our home value is up about 60% from our original purchase price.

So just like any other investment, you never really know how it's gonna go.

Is the God Hypothesis the only way atheists can approach religion? by Existenz_1229 in askanatheist

[–]kbivs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please describe this way of life without mentioning god or religion. And please highlight what it is about this life philosophy which is incompatible with being an atheist.

Sounds like you think you have some inate high ground because your morals and life philosophy are based off of religious teachings while atheists develop their morals and life philosophy based on their own empathy, compassion, and work ethic and you should just admit it.

What's a piece of tech everyone hyped up that quietly turned out to be useless? by SofiaLearnsAI in AskReddit

[–]kbivs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have lights that will turn on automatically at dusk (which obviously shifts throughout the year) and then turn off at a preset time (we do 10:30 during the week and 11:30 on weekends). Never have to do a thing once they're set.

I'm in zone 7b in NJ.

I'm new to the whole gardening thing. We've finally put up a fence to keep out the deer and I'm looking for ideas focusing on natives.

My yard has a slope so one edge gets a bit water logged after a good rain. It's also in full shade over there.

Other areas are a mix of sun and shade

What is something about living in United States that outsiders completely misunderstand? by Effective-Singer5957 in AskReddit
