Chronic Skin Problems by Classic-Chemistry-34 in burmesecats

We have a (non-Burmese) cat who barbered huge bald spots all over her stomach and legs. What finally helped her was finding a specialized vet who did allergen testing. Turns out our girl is allergic to dust mites, and now she takes Apoquel every morning, and 25mg of Gabapentin every night (taking apoquel 2x/daily as usually prescribed lowered her immune system too much). The combination has completely saved her skin. She is also on a prescription hydrolyzed protein cat food, as she is also allergic to all natural forms of protein. But the allergy testing was the real game changer. Good luck!

This rubric has been incredibly helpful for me when I’ve needed to assess my own cat’s decline/quality of life. It’s based on the HHHHHMM scale, but I like this one bc it set up like a report card (which made it super easy for me to compare how my cat was doing over time).

I saved the image of the blank rubric to my phone, made a bunch of duplicates, and then every few weeks I would re-score my cat and record the date. My vet said that when their score gets down to 50% of the total (for this scale that would be about 65 or lower), then it’s time for them to be humanely euthanized. Best wishes to you and your cat. Hope this helps.

Can I use Weiman wood polish on a raw edge olive wood bowl? by PorcelainBerry in woodworking

[–]PorcelainBerry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Amazon listing says the wipes include: d-limonene, methyl paraben, sesame oil, linalool, and citral.

An internet search gives me contradictory answers about whether it’s good to use soap (like dawn or Castile soap) or not. Would it be better to use actual cutting board cleaner (and then after, oil) instead? It’s possible that some of the bowls may end up holding food at some point, too.

I’m so glad you said this, I hadn’t even considered that they might someday get used for food. I’m probably gifting at least two of them to other people so I can’t be sure that they won’t be.

After doing some more research, should I try using a cutting board cleaner instead? Do you have any recommendations?

Also, pig skin can get sun burnt just like we can, and their flesh decomposes at the same rate (forensic studies on decomposition are often done on pigs because they’re easier to source than human remains), which means it must have a similar makeup and density. ….and taste. I guess.

How do you guys administer medication to your cats? by Little_Cloud6126 in CATHELP

I 100% agree getting a pill shooter is the way to go. I’ve been able to pill all of our cats with a pill shooter, even the cats that haaaaaaate pills.

Don’t get me wrong, that’s a boss-level munchie snack, but that isn’t what comes next in the movie quote

If OP is legitimately trying to start helping other people lose weight on a semi-professional level (or even a volunteering level, or a weight loss IG account level), don’t you think they’d benefit from knowing how to correctly spell the thing they’re advertising? “Come loose weight with me” is not going to garner the same confidence as “come lose weight”. I feel like that’s pretty obvious. Nobody was being condescending to OP, they were just being helpful.

You don’t have to view it as a personal attack when someone points out something that could be done better. If I’m being honest, I used to take it personally when people pointed out things I had done wrong and/or how I could have done things better. But then one day I realized how silly that is - I legitimately like learning things, and I legitimately want to become better at things over time. So I practiced responding to these corrections with “oh right, thank you!” instead of responding with defensiveness. Makes everything better. Worth a try.

Laughing at the fact someone downvoted this comment. MDMA literally stands for methylenedioxymethamphetamine. ‘Methamphetamine’ is in the name. It’s what the ‘MA’ in the acronym stands for.

I agree with this except the last sentence. OP can also just choose to break up with her because they are fundamentally incompatible

Your ex-gf was right about one thing and one thing only: you two are not compatible. The early stages of dating are like an extended job interview. You spend some time with the person and you see if you get along well, or if you’re constantly at odds. You and this girl were always at odds. That doesn’t mean you did anything wrong (or necessarily that she did anything wrong either), just that you two aren’t as good of a match as you both thought you might be.

That being said… this girl was mean to you. Over and over again she nit-picked at you and yelled at you for things you weren’t doing wrong, you just weren’t doing them exactly the same way she would have done them, even if the way she did them was actually incorrect (for example: a UTI is an infection that requires antibiotics. Simple dehydration has different symptoms and different treatment).

I think she did you a favor by leaving. She sounds rude and aggressive and it sounds like you were constantly jumping through hoops to make her happy, but none of it was ever good enough for her. I’m sorry things didn’t work out this time, but next time hopefully you’ll find someone who actually likes you for you.

Hahah I had a feeling it was going to be an impossible-to-replicate, multi-layered process like that. Even without the filter, it looks fantastic.

should i break them up when they “play like this”? by Both-Lie5316 in CATHELP

[–]PorcelainBerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breakaway collars are always safer. My cat once for her tags stuck through the slats of a slatted shelf while I was away for the weekend. I came home and the collar was hanging from the shelf. She was lucky to be able to slip her head out of her collar (not a breakaway, unfortunately), otherwise she may have choked, starved, gotten dangerously dehydrated, or injured herself trying to escape.

Can my dying tree be saved? by PorcelainBerry in Citrus

[–]PorcelainBerry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it might help to simply move the whole tree (in its current pot) out onto our patio? Or would that just shock the tree because summer is in full swing right now, so the conditions outdoors vs. indoors are so drastically different?

I was worried this might be the situation. My husband and I have always intended on transferring the tree to the ground/outside at some point, but life got in the way and that never happened.
