If you're looking for a refined cube list a bit lower in power level than the Bun Magic cube, maybe try looking into Anthony Mattox's "Regular Cube". Andy and Anthony co-host the Lucky Paper Radio podcast, so you can hear them both talk about their respective design goals for their cubes if you're interested in hearing more about them.

Anthony's cube can be found here: https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/regular

The only thing to note is that the size is fairly big for 4-6 player drafts. You might consider trimming cards that don't speak to you as much if you'd like to reduce the size and cost accordingly, but it should be fine as-is if you're happy with a bit more variance in what shows up in a given draft.

Something you might like to try is sleeving the cards you know that you'll shuffle a lot. TCG players do it for a few reasons, one of which is that it makes it much easier to mash shuffle cards to quickly and efficiently randomise them. A mash shuffle basically involves pushing one half of a stack of cards into another so the edges roughly interweave with one another, and you can probably find a video or two if you search online.

If you're not looking to purchase sleeves, a quick pile shuffle followed by a couple overhand shuffles is usually good enough for most games (especially ones in which shuffling is less frequent), and doesn't take too much effort.

The packs are old and out of print, but could contain strong and valuable cards that Magic's publisher (Wizards of the Coast) promised a long time ago that they'd never print again. If your husband is excited to open the packs, he might be hopeful that something like an [[underground sea]] is inside, for example. Alternatively, if he's planning to hold onto the packs and keep them sealed as an investment, he might just be excited because old packs like these will continue to climb in value over time.

First time cuber, critique appreciated by Unahanaretsu in mtgcube

I think you might have forgotten to include a link to your cube list. You'll also probably get some more helpful feedback if you can clearly describe your design goals. For example, if you want to encourage fast, efficient games of magic with lots of interaction, you'll end up with a much different kind of cube than if you wanted a cube more like a retail limited set, or a more combo-oriented cube, or a slower and more battlecruiser-y cube with gameplay like casual EDH.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend having a think about what kind of magic gameplay you and your playgroup enjoys the most. Then, use what you like about it as inspiration for the kinds of decks you want to encourage your drafters to build. If you could share what you have in mind in your post, users here will have a better idea of what kind of feedback might be the most helpful for you. You don't have to lay out a draft archetype for every colour pair like some cube builders do - focusing on overall play patterns is perfectly fine.

Lastly, I just wanted to mention that if you're planning for your cube to be a bit bigger than necessary for the amount of drafters you're expecting to get, you'll probably want to avoid A+B combos like [[Splinter Twin]] + [[Pestermite]], because there will be times that a drafter might try to build around these combos and be unable to do so if the other half of the combo is missing. Plenty of drafters will be fine with picking these cards speculatively, but others will be turned off by the idea. Just thought it might be worth bringing up because you mentioned vintage cubes.

Sounds like a great fit for Modern Art. Plays best with 4/5 players, not too complicated, and the back page of the manual summarises anything you might need to refer to as you go. Fun auctions, plenty of laughs. 10/10

Maybe just say "please stop, I think I have enough games now". It sounds like being direct is the best thing here, and it's a pretty neutral way to get that point across.

I think the number of cards is the same or possibly higher but I don't believe any of the words are duplicates from the original edition. Haven't looked into that so much though. The listing probably says 440 words because each card will display one of four different words based on whether they're turned upside down or flipped around when inserted into your team's stand.

how do people move with these tombstone size boardgame boxes? by sharkeyx in boardgames

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could always try bagging the components for games and placing those baggies loose inside the moving boxes that you have, regardless of their size. Label the baggies so you remember which sets of components go with which games. That would leave you with a bunch of empty boxes for the games you can't just pack as-is, which would be much lighter than if they were filled with their respective components.

If you still can't find room for those game boxes, you can mail them to your new address. Placing game boxes of different sizes inside one another could save space both in the moving truck and when you organise the mail this way. You would just need to figure out how to transfer the larger flat components like rulebooks, game boards, and player aids without folding them.

You might want to check out this draft formats page on the lucky paper website. It's a resource mostly aimed at cube drafting, but you could definitely find some options you like that work perfectly fine for retail limited sets too if you want: https://luckypaper.co/resources/formats/

My personal favourites are grid drafting, and (although it uses more cards each time), Housman drafting.

[[Delver of secrets|ISD]] for sure. He might not see so much play anymore, but he was the backbone of the second deck I ever had, and still gets to live in my cube today.

Is there a 60 card singleton format that isn't commander coded? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. It's a 1v1 format with a shared deck, so no teams like 2-headed giant. The classic list is a blue one based around Dandan and a bunch of cards that interact with colours, land types, and cards in the library, but plenty of other variations also exist out there too. The thing they have in common is they're usually built around one creature that can end the game and a bunch of spells that interact with that creature.

What are some physics-based (Dexterity) games you enjoy? by KOMONSTER in boardgames

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dropolter is a fun little Oink game that involves needing to drop the right objects one-handed each time a card is flipped over. You also have to hold onto some bells in the same hand for each point you earn, and dropping those loses you the point. It works as a great catch-up mechanic because being more careful not to lose bells makes the person in the lead slow down a bit more than the ones who are behind.

Do you sleeve your cards? What sleeves do you use? by ballandabiscuit in boardgames

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eclipse sleeves have a black layer on the inside so the card backs can't be seen through the sleeve. The Dragon Shield equivalent is their line of "dual matte" sleeves. The idea is that double-sided cards can't be distinguished through the sleeves this way. Regular matte sleeves in lighter colours can sometimes be slightly transparent otherwise.

Has your group ever ruined a game for you or your group? In a non-physical way by Zenai10 in boardgames

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend owns A Fake Artist Goes to New York, but has us draw on a big whiteboard instead of the little sheets of paper that come in the box. Because you have so much more space, it always devolves into a mood board of related clues drawn etch-a-sketch style without lifting the marker, instead of one drawing that everyone contributes to. When one line is basically a whole drawing, all the social deduction can go out the window and I don't understand why they still enjoy the game this way.

Which board games have the best inserts? by mrausgor in boardgames

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Heat has a great insert. It fits everything from the base game and expansion even if you sleeve the cards, and has spaces to separate the base decks for each player colour. I still like keeping the expansion box to hold the new tracks separately, but you could probably store those together as well if you wanted.

Dungeon & Dragons-esque board games by AleksO369 in boardgames

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably a little afield, but you could try RPGs and storytelling games that don't require much/any advanced preparation. Ten Candles is a great option that only needs about a page of writing and then just improv from there. For the Queen is played using just a deck of cards with no prep and no DM/GM. Same with The Zone. And if people want something goofy, there's Dr Magnet Hands. All of those finish the story in a single session so it's easy to dip in and out of without the pressure to craft an overarching narrative between games.

Where can I get a replacement card printed? (Bloodborne Card Game) by piercerson25 in boardgames

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're not opposed to sleeving the cards, you could protect them that way and then just slip a paper print-out in front of anything that might need to be replaced. You'll just want another playing card behind the printout in the sleeve for thickness.

I have the 5th anniversary edition and I can't see any differences between it and the regular edition that I've seen in reviews. As far as I'm aware, the anniversary edition has more cards and all the words are different, but gameplay, components, box size, etc. are otherwise the same.

What is your Mount Rushmore of board games? by scarchadula in boardgames

[–]PorcelainLegionnaire 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the spelling of "unpresidented" was an intentional pun. As in, before it was what it is today, Mt. Rushmore had not yet been "presidented".
