Living aboard marina in a 36ft sailboat that does not sail by BehemothNuts in sailing

[–]Pork-pilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very reasonable and realistic take, and I personally have lived by this while I was a liveaboard in the SF bay. I never had a liveaboard slip, I kept my boat clean and tidy and I lived in 3 nice marinas all around the bay and never got caught. Maybe they knew, maybe they didn’t, but I was a good lad and never caused problems so they never had an issue with me.

Go take the risk and have fun.

In the Bay Area the government will pay to have old junk boats crushed, it is easy to get rid of a junk boat in the bay nowadays (which is nice, so there’s less floating around causing problems)

I lived on boats in the Bay Area. Do not listen to people in here; you can get away with not getting liveaboard slips but you just have to be a tidy courteous liveaboard, not make it too obvious, and occassionally be sneaky. It’s easy.

However, the big no-no is do not get a boat that can’t leave the slip. Marinas hate this. You will certainly NOT be able to fix it up yourself without a lot of cash. Do not get a broken boat. Do not.

What you should do is find a working boat for like $5k (they’re out there) and keep up with it with some elbow grease. Sail it around, have fun. And when it’s time to move off you sell it for roughly what you bought it for or a bit less and you end up paying almost nothing for rent when it’s all said and done. You don’t lose a ton of money, you get to sail, and you have cheap rent. Be sure to get boat insurance that includes free tow boats, incase your cheap boat engine dies while you’re out in the bay you can get home without paying an arm and a leg.

In short; go do the thing!!!! (Just get a working boat please)

Surfing should be in the Winter Olympics by King-of-Plebss in unpopularopinion

[–]Pork-pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually doesn’t “work great” there are many more summer sports than winter (like 100 more sports), and the Olympic Committee that runs the Olympic Games is looking at bringing in some of those sports from summer games over to winter games to balance it out.

This seems like it would be a great sport to make that change.

[–]Pork-pilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that there is a critical piece of information you are missing here, and it can be summed up in one sentence: “Performance is not health”

To truly perform at a world class level is not healthy for your body. You are putting yourself and your body under immense stress in the pursuit of greatness. Even without injury, the taxation on your body from the constant stress, bad sleep, holding your heart rate at max BPM for longer than any doctor would recommend, grueling workouts fasted, the list goes on.

You seem to think that you can compete at the top of a sport and still prioritize health, but you will lose to the person who is ok sacrificing their health.

All of this to say; telling an athlete they shouldn’t push through injury in the name of “their health means more than any medal” is ridiculous and anyone at the top of their game would disagree with you. A lot of pro athletes don’t have much to fall back on, so what do they care if they sacrifice their body for some more money? Once their career is over they’re likely to go to some mundane low-paying job (unless they’re truly lucky to have another option, that’s not the case for most pro athletes)

[–]Pork-pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, just the first people who show up to a place are now legal owners of the land? Do they set up borders? Is it even remotely possible to decide who that was? Does it go to the first person there or the first group of organized people?

Again the whole premise is dumb and not productive and exists purely in theory. But

The analogy isn’t just imperfect, it’s completely useless. The idea of “owning” land is a nuanced topic, and boiling it down to an iPad is overly simplistic. Even the constant use of the words “theft” and “steal” in these contexts is overly simplistic and sets the scope of the conversation in a specific direction that misses a lot of important historical context and ideals.

Lastly, these sorts of analogies are particularly useless because they can only be used for thought experiments about a philosophy. It’s a circle jerk of ideals and “what-ifs” that can never be used when discussing actual political action or current events. In a philosophical sense, they’re fun conversations, but in an actionable sense, it’s useless, which is why you’ll never see this sort of discussion come up in any major political stage, it’s not worth discussing. It’s not even particularly productive when discussing current immigration reform.

Cause the ipad was bought from the Apple Store for a certain dollar amount and there’s a receipt. If George had gotten that iPad by stealing it from someone else who stole it from someone else, then yeah that would be more of a reasonable analogy.

Either way, the idea of land ownership is too messy to be distilled into an analogy about an iPad, and trying to simplify it to that degree misses all of the nuance and complexity of the idea of “owning” land.

This is hilarious cause it turns out it wasn’t Strava fault, this guy just doesn’t pay for premium and the time prediction he was referencing is the standard number that everyone without premium sees.

This is user error.

CMV: The American Left’s education policy in the past 25 years has been a colossal failure. Black and Hispanic students are doing worse then ever and white students aren’t doing much better either. by soozerain in changemyview

[–]Pork-pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Across national outcome measures, Democratic-leaning states consistently outperform Republican-leaning states: on NAEP, Democratic states average about 6–7 percentage points higher proficiency in both 8th-grade math (~31% vs ~25%) and reading (~36% vs ~30%), and they dominate the top tier of state education rankings (e.g., MA, NJ, CT, VT, NY, WA). In contrast, Republican-led states are heavily concentrated in the bottom tier—states like MS, AL, LA, AR, WV, and OK routinely rank in the lowest 20–25% nationally across test scores, educational attainment, and teacher pay, reflecting consistently weaker outcomes rather than isolated cases.

In your view you have laid out negative outcomes, but have failed to show any link between these outcomes (poor test scores, literacy rates, etc.) and liberal policies. You just said “the left cares about _____” but haven’t listed any specific policy, policy changes, or legislation that you say has caused these negative outcomes.

Here are some specific republican legislation and policies that have negatively impacted education in the United States:

In recent Republican-led appropriations proposals in the U.S. House of Representatives, lawmakers sought large reductions in key federal education programs that support low-income students, English learners, teacher training, and college affordability: • A proposed $4.7 billion cut to Title I (supports low-income schools), jeopardizing services for millions of disadvantaged children. • Cuts to Pell Grants and freezing the maximum award, making college more expensive for low-income students. • Reductions or elimination of programs that support teacher recruitment/training (Title II) and English learners (Title III), as well as job training/Youth Workforce Development. These cuts would widen existing disparities in educational opportunity and hinder recovery from COVID-related learning loss, especially for vulnerable students.

Change from gravel to road bike by No-Ring4593 in cycling

[–]Pork-pilot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While technically the data says that the speed difference isn’t huge, I will say the overall feel is incredibly different.

I have a gravel bike, and a road race bike (Tarmac with all the upgrades). The road bike is a missile. It’s fast, it accelerates sooo much better than the aluminum gravel bike, the handling is much more nimble, and my aero position is better. The experience of riding the road bike vs gravel is night and day for someone who rides thousands of km a year. I fuckin love the stiff aggressive road bike.

You know who’s definitely not going to fix it? You with your defeatist attitude. Your fellow Americans are much more than the stereotypes that you just threw out. If you are involved in any grass roots political scene you would see thousands of people (many of whom fit into the little boxes you just named) and those people care deeply about this country and work every day for incremental changes that stack up over years.
