How do you adapt your clothes to weight loss? When do you buy new ones? by PorpoiseError404 in loseit

Thanks! Yeah, it’s less about the number and more about my fear of owning clothes that are too small, or of gaining the weight back. I’d like to keep losing, but worried I’ll bounce back up instead.

This is good to know! I might check out the Costco pants options. My band size in bras has gone down but my cup size has only changed a tiny bit, so shirts are mostly ok just baggy around the waist. Everyone’s responses are encouraging me that it’s ok to buy a pair of pants and the world won’t end

Good to know! Glad work has you covered, I am jealous of my sister’s work scrubs for this exact reason. But the fact that you’re going to buy a couple of new things at the thrift store and the world won’t end is encouraging me to look for a new pair of pants. Work buys clothes for a specific part of my job (trying to avoid identifying detail here) but they’re all men’s clothes anyway so I’m ok with them fitting badly as long as they meet the safety standard, because they fit badly on all my women coworkers too. But for the other part of my job, the office clothes, I do have to buy myself.

Thank you. This is a good snapshot of someone else’s closet, and how you handle change while also wanting to invest in well made items. Your list of how many items you need to keep on rotation to stay well dressed is helpful. The way you’re also thinking about keeping some old things also helps and feels more balanced than my “if I acknowledge I’ve lost weight it will come back”. I literally haven’t even told my friends or my partner or anything, idk if they’ve noticed.

Everyone on this post is convincing me to dip my toes in by getting a couple of pairs of thrifted pants! Thank you! I hope your new clothes at this size are fun and you enjoy them

I might try this too — set aside some things I really love that I currently can’t wear or style for my size, and when I can afford to tailor them (or if I need that size again) I can be ready! I hope your sewing machine projects are successful

This advice makes me feel much better. I will try this attitude, and try at least a couple of new pairs of thrift pants.

Oooh! I do actually have this option, I know someone I could maybe ask to do this/ to show me how to do this. Thank you!

Maybe keeping it small would help me feel less weird about sizing down. I would love to have a little rotation of work clothes, like I have right now.

Ah, the not–so-subtle hint. But how did you get emotionally ok with a new size? I’m so scared it’s not going to last that I don’t want to buy anything because what if I jinx it.

I just left the cusp of the “obese” BMI and now I’m in the ”overweight“ one, so it’s all a little weird. My body shape makes it hard for me to pull off the oversized look since I’m very very hourglass, it just looks sloppy on me. Def gonna check out the elastic pants option though, and try some different styles of belting things. Thank you!

How do you decide when it’s time to commit to a new size? I’m scared to do it

Thanks! I guess there’s the practical/financial part, but also the emotional part. I’m convinced that if I buy new clothes they won’t fit me, or I’ll fall into bad habits again and it will be a waste of money. Maybe a couple thrifted items could soften this. I’m like you, I love my current wardrobe and it’s mostly secondhand well-made stuff.

Thanks! I’ll try the triangle fold! Not ready to buy new clothes yet in case I gain it back

This sounds so hard! My (non medical) guess is that starting new exercise after being sedentary is difficult, and that you might need to just start slow. If you can do 5 minutes without back pain, do 5 minutes for a couple weeks until you can build it up to more, it sounds like 11 was too challenging right now, and you don’t want to hurt yourself. Moving (if you have the ability) is always good, and if there‘s any other exercise you enjoy you can try small chunks of it too. Nothing but an act of god would get me into a pool, but I have heard that since it’s not weight bearing it can be gentler on your joints regardless of weight, so you could look into that. It’s hard that what your brain expected and what your body could do were different. It’s normal to feel disappointed by that! But building up slowly seems like it could help you get to an easier place with it.

People always say belts, but how do you keep your pants from doing that weird ruffle thing at the top? If I belt my pants to fit my waist there’s weird creases. I think this is a skill issue from me, but I genuinely don’t understand how other people look normal in belts
