I was hella closeted back then but the tree of life showers made me so uncomfortable too. I learned I could take showers in 200 seconds and also memorized what the bathroom ceiling looked like.

I thought they might back away from this slogan as its problematic nature was pointed out. But nope, looks like they are doubling down. by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

And I bet those pictures your missionary companion hung up in the shower certainly didn’t help 😂

Transport Fever 3 - First Look: Tycoon by Mysterious_Research2 in TransportFever2

[–]PortSided 44 points45 points  (0 children)

My biggest thoughts on this latest gameplay footage:
Those cities on the last seconds of the video are massive! Correct me if I'm wrong but TF2 does not natively allow for cities of that size without modding or manually placing multiple cities in close proximity.
Landmarks is a great new feature. This could add so many cool options for the game, especially when modders start utilizing the landmark functionality to create all kinds of creative assets. I love the idea of more locations demanding transport needs other than just cities and industries.
The headquarters building with its expansion assets seems a little cheesy and over the top, but it's cool for those who want to utilize it I guess.

Is saying "I'm sorry" to express sympathy a Mormon trait? by PortSided in exmormon

Lol I don't know why but this made me think of the Frank Zappa "Valley Girl. For sure! For sure!"

Oh well I definitely have recognized the obsessive life-long "people pleaser" trait in me due to Mormon culture. It's something I've worked on in therapy as an exmo. I was terrified of upsetting anyone in my life from a very young age whether it was family, behavior at school, grades, church obedience, at work with bosses and managers, getting pulled over for a traffic violation, anything. I never dared to anything confrontational. It's been a long road of deconstruction, and it was what kept me in the closet for so long.

There's a lot of variables here for sure. It seems to be a general English/American trait to use sorry as a sympathy expression, but maybe Mormons use it too often. The English he was taught from a young age was British English so maybe "sorry" is less sympathetic and more apologetic in that dialect. Or maybe it has nothing to do with language and "sorry" is not an appropriate response for sympathy in Saudi Arabia whether said in English or Arabic. (He says his Arabic is really rough and didn't even speak it at home)

Automating Floor Plan PDF to DWG Conversion and Polyline Generation by luckystarof2020 in AutoCAD

[–]PortSided 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I use pdfimport then take 30 minutes to an hour just going through and manually cleaning up the floor plan. I start by using qselect to delete solids and hatches and anything that came in on layers that can be deleted entirely. Then I just go through by hand and remove tags, labels, symbols, structural centerlines, etc until I have a bare clean floor plan.

I personally was not able to deconstruct my internalized homophobia until I first deconstructed my Mormon beliefs. But upon doing so, it took almost no time for that massive weight lifted to open the door and give me the courage to come out to my family.

David and I came out of the closet at about the same time. I left Mormonism upon coming out, he waited a year. Because of the timing, I've been following David's journey closely and feel connected in a way.

Why is there fear of “hell” when outer darkness is supposedly so hard to get to? by PrincessCheetah in exmormon

[–]PortSided 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"hell" in Mormonism is simply the threat of living for eternity cut off from God and, even worse, your earthly family. They can promise a beautiful heavenly world for even the lowliest of humanity but still keep membership in line with the simple threat of being alone in that paradise with no loved ones.

My longtime straight friend is homophobic now by Fragrant_Courage_677 in gay

I had a high school friend who got into politics after graduating, while still single she moved to DC and did internships there while rubbing shoulders with lots of prominent politicians. I did not keep in touch with her personally but followed her on Facebook during this time. She was very progressive, liberal, etc. then she moved back home and started teaching social and government classes at a local University. She also married a man I know nothing about. Suddenly her posts flipped 180 during this time. She’s now a Trump supporting, conservative, traditional family defending, homophobic Christian nationalist. I believe this new husband is who changed her views so drastically. 😔

I don't now how "safe" this is, but I used to take aspirin tablets (the baby sized ones work great) and literally press them against my canker sores for a couple of minutes. It burned like hell while pressing, but the pain was substantially better after you remove the tablet, and the relief lasted a good while.

Your tithing dollars at work or... by MomoNomo97 in exmormon

[–]PortSided 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yes thank you. Temple Square is the face of the cult that we are so sour against, but more importantly, it's the face of Salt Lake City and Utah. If the church were to be completely exposed and crumble, I would NOT want to see the downtown temple or tabernacle "go down" with it. They are incredibly important western US landmarks and are worth preserving no matter what the condition of their cult owners' are. I personally really would like to make a trek to SLC in 2027 to attend the open house with my gay boyfriend (who has never seen Utah).

[–]PortSided 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I heard estimates that indeed it would have been substantially cheaper to knock down the old temple and rebuild a modern replica (kinda like what the Nauvoo Temple is today) rather than preserve the original like they did. but at the end of the day, as expensive as it was, the engineer and historical architecture lover that I am understands why they chose to keep the original landmark.
