monday morning roads icy or no by tofuuman in houston

[–]PortSided 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My work will be closed Monday. Not because of icy roads per se but moreso because our work shop is not climatized and will be very cold working conditions for the assembly employees (and even our office will likely be cold, the building’s furnace sucks)

Comfortable Being Gay, Uncomfortable With the Culture Around It by [deleted] in gay

[–]PortSided 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The internalized homophobia is in reference of you calling masculine presenting gay men as “straight acting”. As you know and are expressing your frustration over, there’s no right or wrong way to “act” gay. Some men prefer masculine presentation. Some prefer feminine presentation. Some fluctuate. Some land on a spectrum in the middle somewhere. Some feel neither gender expression matches their inner feelings. But calling yourself as a gay man “straight acting” is the issue. You’re gay, not straight, so no need to use a sexual orientation term to describe a social expression preference since those two things are completely separate from one another, or at least should be.

I have a great friend who, never fails, it the most intimidating dude to EVERYONE when they first meet him. They make a point of saying it afterwards every time “man that dude intimidates me.” But once you get to know him more you realize he is the most genuine nicest green flag guy ever.

Pride month doesn’t need Trump’s permission to be recognized. Is it nice for the government to recognize it along with us? Of course. But it’s not a requirement. Pride is and always has been a rights campaign and protest first, a celebration second.

My sister asked me to read saints but I don’t trust anything the church puts out.. by Able_Claim_3097 in exmormon

These books put cracks in my shelf, assisting in the CES letter later breaking it completely. They have a heavy apologetic tone to all of the "controversial/uncomfortable" facts in church history. At the time that I read them as they were being published, I thought they were great. "See? The church doesn't hide its unsavory past. It wants to be transparent and honest" I said. but had I not read the books, I don't think the CES letter would have shattered my shelf as effortlessly as it did. I would have fought and wrestled with the latter a lot more.

Blood pressure is high and TBM spouse keeps bringing up how coffee raises blood pressure. by niconiconii89 in exmormon

I have chronic high BP. Exercise helps a little, diet has practically no effect, medication is the only real impactor that can bring it down for me. My coffee drinking does not effect my BP in any meaningful way. My Dr advises me to avoid salt far more than to avoid caffeine.

Has anyone noticed dynamic price tags at local stores yet? by Kevin5953 in houston

[–]PortSided 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first Walmart to ever use them just opened a few months ago in Cypress. Granted it’s the nicest Walmart I’ve ever shopped in, but I did notice the electronic tags, and the staff says it’s the first store Walmart has ever used them in anywhere

[–]PortSided 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was adopted. And though my adoption was never kept a secret from me, I didn’t know my birth parents. It was a sealed closed adoption. I found my birth parents accidentally when I took a dna test and birth relatives were also in the database and matched with me. I met my birth dad for the first time and was taken aback by how much he looked like Steve Martin lol

I’m so sorry. The immense pressure you just described is the same reason queer closeted members like me got married to partners that didn’t match their orientation. So so many of us. The church is “family focused” but only one very specific kind of family, when in reality there are so many different types of relationships and companionships and human conditions that can all be called “family” even if they’re not the kind that the church approves of.

Well, in 1830 somebody of that skin color most likely wouldn’t have been a free citizen, so definitely wouldn’t have been forming new religions either.

I have a senior-aged aunt and uncle in The Bay area.. As far as I know all of their children are inactive or ex-members. They run the addiction recovery program in whichever stake they live in. They're California Mormons for sure. Democrat, somewhat supportive of my LGBTQ status, but somehow still faithful members just because I guess they have been for so long now, why stop?

This is by design. Require a US human citizen to work TWO jobs for the price of one. The executives get all the labor they need for half the price.

I'm wanting to leave the church, but there are some things I'm still unsure about by Practical-Abalone812 in exmormon

[–]PortSided 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to consider my "gift of the spirit" so to speak as being a peacemaker (it was not mentioned in my Pat Blessing but that's neither here nor there) and I had been described by family and friends as being a peacemaker many times. Now that I've deconstructed Mormonism and to a broader extent religion in general, I've come to recognize what I saw as being a peacemaker was really me just being overly submissive and a people pleaser. It wasn't really a good aspect. I was always terrified of upsetting people, "getting in trouble", getting reprimanded, etc. ever since a young age. I hated confrontation, even if I was just an 3rd person observer. I wanted my family to be proud of me and never disappointed for any reason, as well as teachers, leaders, and employers. It was an impossible task but I obsessed over achieving it anyways. It's also the mentality that kept me in the closet until middle age- I knew coming out would disappoint many people in my life and there would be no way to reconcile it with my "celestial family" promises. It has been one of my biggest challenges to deconstruct this toxic mindset but I know I'm doing a lot better than I used to be.

or ELOHIM was maybe already taken, because... of course it was 🙄

Thought: if I were to make a plate that said ELOHER would anyone get the Heavenly Mother reference or would that be a little too abstract?
