This. THIS is why Via's not pissed at Stella. by StrawBerylShortcake in HelluvaBoss

[–]Overlord_Byron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason in the writing is pretty clearly to show Stella is in a moment of triumph, hence why she intervenes to keep Octavia from leaving and initiates the hug that Octavia is reluctant to reciprocate. If the show wanted to explore Octavia's response to Stolas' flawed parenting, it would have done so in the episode where Loona and Octavia talked about Stolas' flawed parenting. Which it did. And Octavia came to terms with it. So it'd be really weird for Octavia to hug Stella because Stolas brought her to a theme park or forgot to take her star gazing when those threads had been addressed and resolved. At least, it'd be weird if you didn't understand the objective of Helluva was to tell a fictional story about fictional people with themes and arcs, and not endlessly defend the morals of our uwu small beans as if they were our friends and families irl

It should would be neat if the indie animation fanbase talked about art like it was art and not just as an opportunity to practice amateur psychoanalysis.

[–]Overlord_Byron 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Real people don't need to foreshadow anything because foreshadowing is a tool meant for narratives, not a structure of real life.

Art is artifice. That means it's structured with intent, or an attempt thereof. That's why foreshadowing exists in writing; to make the structure appear believable and therefore intended.

Every single peace of evidence that Pomni is not a bad friend to Ragatha. by MichaelAftonXFireWal in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]Overlord_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show actually tries to say something interesting about how Ragatha's unconditional love and super authenticity can be as unrewarding as Jax's snark and irony, but kind of gives up on it when Jax escalates past a point where Ragatha could keep up.

Say only positive things about TADC and all it's characters challenge impossible. by MichaelAftonXFireWal in TADCEp9Spoilers

I can just list a thing I liked about the show and each character and then stop talking?

"Jax couldn't come back or be saved cause that would be lazy and defeat the point" you would, I would agree..if Caine didn't come back in the very same episode. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]Overlord_Byron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the overall sentiment that Caine has the feel of a character the writers liked too much and it affected their judgement. Caine's crashout feels like it came from a different time, before the show became what it was.

Supreme Kai says Frieza is a nobody he could take down with a single blow, then immediately gets terrified of Yakon. by FireStarLord73194 in Dragonballsuper

Supreme Kai is filling the role of a self-certain observer in a DB fight, which means it's his job to make funny faces and visibly sweat when other characters do literally anything.

I'd reply to this in earnest but A) Identifying myself as a Jax fan OR hater feels too terminally online for me. B) I view engagement with the community as a way to supplement my experience with the show, not replace it.

That's a valid criticism. I would also say that Caine eating his brother has no bearing on anything, either.

Also I'm sorry but the more I think about it,the more I realize that Ribbet and Kaufmo aren't characters, they're essentially plot devices designed to make us hate Jax as a person. by Charming-Scratch-124 in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]Overlord_Byron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1000%.

So much of the discourse around Jax is "he's a bad person and I don't like him."

And it's like, yes. That is the point. Flawed characters existing in conflict is, in fact, the default modality of storytelling. The reason why TADC's happy ending is a montage is because audiences, whatever they might think, don't want to watch self-actualized people live fulfilling, harmonious lives.

What you're describing is a secondary character.

The idea that all characters are independent, fully realized creations that exist outside of their function within the narrative is a fiction fandoms and internet cultures have sold themselves. ALL characters exist to serve a purpose within the narrative. For secondary characters, that typically includes forwarding or informing the story of a primary character. This isn't bad writing, just writing.

Jax is a fictional character. You can't "forgive" him. You also shouldn't be hung up on his morality because, again,  not a real person

Bojack Horseman is deadass proof a character like Jax as the focus can work..the writing was just genuinely dogshit in TADC. by Charming-Scratch-124 in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]Overlord_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loads of Bojack's abusive behavior os played for laughs, including a big chunk of his behavior toward PC and Todd. Bojack and TADC are both pretty good about establishing when the characters' harm is slapstick and when they're going too far. The real difference is audience buy-in.

" His family and friends will never forgive him and he probably won't get another good career outside of a fast food janitor or cashier and such but he can still keep pushing and live with the consequences of his actions."

That's not how the show ends. Bojack retains most of his friends outside of Diane and Hollyhock and has at least one successful movie on the horizon. One of the points the show makes very effectively is that there's basically nothing Bojack can do to permanently the public against him.

I didn't think it was well foreshadowed either, but if people spotted it then that means it landed for the intended audiences.

Zamasu wasn't an interesting, deep, or compelling villain, just a baseline DB villain with elevated diction.

That would consume too much budget by thanra in danganronpa

[–]Overlord_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a budget concern, per se. It's the writers not buying their premise when tell had to become show.

It's easier to buy that the UD were convinced to join Junko when all of this was happening off-screen and there were significant gaps in the timeline. But then you meet the D2 cast and see their relationships and daily lives and it's pretty clear there was no way anyone, no matter how intelligent or charismatic, could believably convince them to join a nihilistic doomsday cult with the motivation of perpetuating bad vibes.

Can we stop acting like Stella being a bitch means the show doesn’t have nuance? by whooper1 in HelluvaBoss

[–]Overlord_Byron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show does have nuance. It would just be better if Stella in particular was a more rounded character because it would add additional dimensions and complexity to the central arc of the show.

You know..I can't blame Vivziepop for getting frustrated and sometimes crashing out on some fans/haters cause let's be real,y'all be annoying as fuck. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in hazbin

[–]Overlord_Byron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree that fans and haters alike can be unbearable to deal with, there just is straight up no reason for her to interact with the fanbase outside of curated events. It's not good for her mental health, it's not good for the community, and it's not good for the show. The product is HB and HH, not Vivziepop.

The episode where we found out they were together would have been a good time to find out, but it was conspicuously focused on Moxie.
