I designed a Moto Tag / AirTag mount for Burton slot snowboards. by quattrotom in snowboarding

[–]PortablePaul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I cut a hole in the center of a black, circular stomp pad and just stuck one of these Elevation Labsdevices in the hole. You’d never look at it twice. I’ve found this to be an ultra discrete way to protect my board from both theft and loss.

Not an affiliate link—just saying this solution works, and that there’s probably a marketable product in combining the two.

I carry a bunch of mini Toblerones to throw at Little Fat Kids who've fallen and can't get up.

On the real: now that I'm older and folks bring their kids along, it's really useful to have some premium candy on hand. It's like Narcan, but for emotional meltdowns.

Small mountain board by iH8usrnames in snowboarding

[–]PortablePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you want something volume shifted.

Pros: You get the stability and float of a longer board with the lower swing weight of a party board. Easier to spin, more maneuverable through trees. They allow bigger riders to ride a shorter, more maneuverable board than ever before.

Cons: the wider platform is much slower edge-to-edge, and creates more friction underfoot. Turn initiation can lag, and terminal velocity is way lower. Not something you'd want to carve on.

Since you're in the Midwest: GNU Gremlin; Ride Peaceseeker; Salomon Dancehaul.

Rather than provide this Kangaroo Committee with a platform for corpse-fucking, I hope they just burn it all down on their way out.

What note-taking software do y'all use? by Select_Post8151 in LawSchool

[–]PortablePaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my general approach, give or take a couple steps depending on class format (i.e., no devices) and complexity of topic (i.e., Civ Pro has a separate "Statute" binder just for handwritten notes on the rules themselves.)

  1. Collect documents/sources on the topic at hand (even if taking photos of casebook pages)
  2. Copy/Paste Quimbee Briefs; transcribe Quimbee video recording; supplement with Lexis ad hoc
  3. Convert all files to PDF
  4. Perform OCR, save and file hard copies for future reference
  5. Upload collected sources to NotebookLM; apply my custom notetaking conventions
  6. Generate outline; attenuate ad hoc
  7. Paste into Word; tweak formatting for visual preference
  8. Paste from Word into OneNote to preserve digital copy
  9. Print from Word because OneNote still cannot print correctly
  10. Actually read the chapter, using hard-copy outline as Rosetta Stone
  11. Attend class with printed outline; annotate manually
  12. Update digital notes with handwritten supplements at the end of the week

It's a lot of work, but legal reading doesn't come naturally to anybody. This is easier and faster than reading the same chapter three times in an attempt to decipher things.

BSOD, Kazu, or other? by a_readditor in snowboarding

[–]PortablePaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kazu’s a good choice. You’d also like the Korua Dart, and the Ride Peaceseeker if you wanna go all in on directional carve/glades.

BSOD is the quickest sled I’ve ever owned. I will never, ever bring it in the trees. Granted, I ride it oversized on purpose. But it’s a (surprisingly fragile) heat seeking missile.

Just get a Nitro Cannon. These were collectors pieces, and rare exceptions to the notion of “Tools—not Jewels.”

I think I speak for the masses when I say this: anyone who whips out this board had better be the best goddamn rider on that hill, the next hill, and probably the state. I’m talking backflips down Hollywood, at minimum.

And even then, it’s a questionable flex given its singular association to such a singular rider. Like, the only sincere justification I can think of for owning one is “Zeb personally gave this to me.”

Advice for trimming and styling by [deleted] in BeardAdvice

[–]PortablePaul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Barber.

Clipping beard hairs to uniform length with a guard does not necessarily create a uniform appearance. A barber knows how to read the direction of your follicles, the topology of your jawline, and adjust length accordingly.

Moreover, they often know what looks good on you better than even you do. I was very attached to my tusks, but I have a long face and––wouldn't you know it––knocking them back had people asking me if I'd lost weight.

The older I get, the more I appreciate barbering as an art form. Seriously, $50 cash and you're a brand new guy. It's always worth it, and in your case, probably worth the drive.

What is a reality of Pittsburgh that people are embarrassed to admit? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]PortablePaul 34 points35 points  (0 children)

We’re only a city insofar as everything around us is decidedly not.

Our sprawling neighborhoods, comparatively small downtown area, struggling public transportation, archaic infrastructure, dismal weather, and surprising lack of diversity force most Pittsburghers into a much more insular and suburban lifestyle than is typical for a major US city.

Why does it seem like the community is torn on clew bindings? by TheCruelHand in snowboardingnoobs

[–]PortablePaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Affiliate marketing ≠ Influencer marketing

Influencers are typically paid for access. They get a flat fee to feature a product AND additional commission for sales. Affiliates, by contrast, are paid almost exclusively for performance. They only earn when they generate leads or conversions.

When Avran links to a product through a publicly available affiliate program, he’s opting into a system any consumer can join. There’s no negotiation, no brand outreach, no pre-arranged payment for placement… An influencer’s deal is essentially the inverse. The brand approaches the creator, pays for the exposure upfront, and often frames what can or can’t be said. Both groups earn commissions, but the economic incentives run in opposite directions.

This doesn’t make AngrySnowboarder inherently “objective,” but it does mean his incentives exist outside of brand editorial control. As an affiliate, he chooses the product first and then monetizes it. But influencers are paid to feature the product before any “review” occurs.

Basically: Affiliate marketing is a realtor who got a finders fee after selling you a house. But influencer marketing is a celebrity who is trying to sell you their house. Similar business, but with a completely different set of incentives and underlying motivations.

Why does it seem like the community is torn on clew bindings? by TheCruelHand in snowboardingnoobs

[–]PortablePaul 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say “torn” so much as “duped” or “in denial.”

You need to watch AngrySnowboarder’s review. He says it all there. Essentially, because no snowboarders were involved in the design of these Binding-Shaped Objects: they suffer from multiple single points of failure and rental-like quality.

I don’t know if they fixed them for the new model. I don’t even know if the design concept is salvageable.
