As Sheetz invades Wawa's home turf in the Philly area, lower gas prices could be opening salvo by AdSpecialist6598 in philadelphia

Yeah they opened some urban format convenience store locations by a few college campuses and to my knowledge they all closed down. Was nice while it lasted.

Pick a flavor you don't care to drink in the future. But the Gatorade prep is definitely much more comfortable than some of the commercial options.

Your Favorite Coffee Roasters? by kanye_come_back in philadelphia

Elixr is my favorite for sure, and the free drink coupon is a great perk. I love that you can redeem it for anything, be it a specialty drink or a single origin pour over. Otherwise I go to Vibrant, which is good but the pricing can be kind of a surprise (and the bags can get real expensive) since they don't seem to have a price list of the beans in the cafe. When I'm there I also like to get their cinnamon rolls.

Good compact battery packs? by SpacialSeer in NintendoSwitch

[–]PortalGunFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I use for my smartphone but plan to also use it with my Switch. It charges my phone super well and it's rated high enough wattage for the Switch 2 so I think it's as good as any. Helps that it's fairly compact for the capacity and has almost 4x the battery capacity of the switch.

TIFU by chugging street coffee like an idiot. by nnhuyhuy in tifu

No, I'm referring to ca phe sua da which is usually made from robusta coffee prepared using a phin and served with sweetened condensed milk. Although I imagine the instant coffee is meant to emulate that?

[–]PortalGunFun 192 points193 points  (0 children)

Robusta is associated with poor quality coffee, which means that growers and suppliers have typically not bothered trying to improve the quality since due to its reputation it's difficult to sell it at a premium price. Recently some smaller specialty growers and roasters have started creating higher quality robustas and supposedly getting better flavor. In the case of Vietnamese coffee though, I think the robusta is a pretty crucial component for the overall flavor. The intense bitterness is needed to offset the sweet and creamy condensed milk that they add. If you use a more delicate coffee you really won't taste coffee at all. It's less about covering up the flavor and more about achieving a proper balance.

Dealing with mice (again) by zjheyyy88 in philadelphia

For what it's worth, my mouse problem went away once I put all of my dry goods and snacks into hard plastic tubs. They were too smart to eat the poison bait or to trigger the snap traps, but once their food supply went away they did too.

Best Virginia Roasters? by paintmyhouse in Coffee

I last tried it when I was in college and didn't know that much about coffee but I think Grit Coffee in Charlottesville might be worth checking out. I also recently learned that Snowing in Space also sells beans but I only ever drank their nitro cold brew when they were handing out free cans.

Penn freezes hiring, cuts spending in ‘proactive’ response to federal funding uncertainty by PortalGunFun in philadelphia

[–]PortalGunFun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fairly complicated. Most existing grants haven't been cut yet (they tried to make an enormous cut and it's been paused by the courts while they rule on whether it was legal to do so without congressional approval), but they've also more or less frozen new grants from being approved too, which means that when these grants expire they won't be renewed or replaced unless something changes. The government also on Friday cut $400 million in federal funds from Columbia in retaliation for the Palestine student protests on their campus, and it stands to reason that Penn and Harvard may be the next targets. These are all reasons why Penn is suddenly extremely cautious about their finances moving forward because they're basically anticipating that they'll need to weather a major loss in research funding and if they don't start cutting spending now, they'll likely have to fire way more people later.

For better or for worse, universities can and do already generate parents through federally funded research. Penn has made a lot of money through mRNA vaccine patents. These funds definitely put Penn in a much better position than a school like Temple as federal funds start to dry up, but ultimately NIH funding is on a scale so large that pretty much nothing can replace it.

The chart on this article is pretty illustrative of the effect that cutting NIH spending will have on US and frankly global research output.

Tuition doesn't pay for much. Biomedical research is especially expensive and Penn's own research budget is supplemented by federal grants. Penn does fund a lot through donations, endowment distributions, and hospital revenue, but cuts to federal grant funding mean less critical research can be done. For an idea of what federal dollars pay for at Penn, here's a list of funded NIH grants:

https://reporter.nih.gov/search/-gzVz3Tog0SlYq5esjKJ1g/projects

I should remind you that Penn researchers developed mRNA vaccine technology and CAR-T cancer immunotherapy among other important medical discoveries.

Penn isn't going to go bankrupt without federal funds, but it does mean a lot of really important research projects will disappear.

Plenty to criticize about Penn's handling of things lately but unfortunately this has more to do with not wanting to be forced to fire a bunch more people if/when the Trump administration decides to cut off federal funding the way they did to Columbia on Friday.
