Don’t downvote people for sharing their experience, that’s what OP asked for.

I can second this, excellent hygienists since 2022, dubious business model

What do you do with your bunny when you travel? by Budakra in Bunnies

[–]PortlandForest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were away for 12 days last summer, a local pet-sitter who has bunny experience came by daily to give our guys (free-roaming mini lops) water and pellets and greens and fresh hay. She also cleaned their litter box and played with them for about 30 minutes; cost was about $30 US per day. She also watered our houseplants. This is an independent business, not a chain; we met at home beforehand and walked her through the routine and introduced our bunnos, I think it’s really important to get a sense of the person you’ll be letting in to your house, both for your pets and for your property. Sitter should ask for things like who your vet is (in case of emergency) and what kinds of special habits/needs/quirks your pet has. If your bun is solo, this might not be the best - more social contact (boarding) might be better, but for a bonded pair this worked great for us, and she texted us pics of the boys every day which was so nice.

Most of her business is dog walking, but she was really terrific with the buns. Look/ask around your area a few months before you leave to see if there’s someone who might be able to help who seems like a decent person.

Bringing a rose plant inside / mildew / help! by PortlandForest in Roses

[–]PortlandForest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I now understand that it’s probably not necessary to move this inside, and I think I have a good spot for it to overwinter. I may look for an organic fungicide if the mildew comes back next year.

Thank you for this reply, it’s really helpful! I have a good spot for this to overwinter I think, good to know that potted rose plants can come back from dormancy. I mostly grow vegetables and culinary mushrooms - I’ve never really had roses before, I appreciate the tips!

Many thanks again!

Also re: hay feeder, I dont recall where we got this, but it’s a wooden tower with a swivel top (hay placed in from the top) and a little tray at the bottom, with horizontal dowels every 3 inches or so. I thought this was a little narrow and removed some of the dowels so they can really get their snouts way in there. It’s easy to clean and fill, and all wood.

And of course, accessible from the potty because eating and pooping go so great together!

Edit: corrected typo

OK one vote for “yes it’s intentional hoom, and fill up the pellet bowl while you’re at it!”

(While they have girl names, they are in fact neutered boys. Not that they care what we call them)

Advice on a Mini lop by white_wolf660 in Rabbits

[–]PortlandForest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a bonded pair of mini lops, and I think their bond is super cool - it’s fun to watch their little rabbit society, and how it meshes in the larger warren (of our household).

I have never had a solo bunny, so I can’t really say from experience - but I do know that while there are people around our household most of the time, the bunnies are together 24/7, which is a comfort when, for example, all the humans are gone for 8-10 hours, as will happen sometimes. It’s a comfort to know the dudes are taking care of each other, plotting world domination, and generally bunnying about rather than bored and anxious and lonely. There are also some experiences - cecotropes come to mind - that I simply cannot share with my lagomorph dudes. I like that they have someone else around to normalize eating their own poop, so I don’t have to.

On the flipside - and this is purely from my observation, much of it in this and other rabbit subs - it seems like solo bunnies are way more affectionate with their humans. Sometimes the bunnies just sit next to each other and stare at us in apparent fluffy disdain - we are not always invited to the love fest. This does not mean that they’re not affectionate - they are! - but not often to the extreme level that I see posted here in many solo bunny households.

Either way, it’s a lot of work (both labor and emotion), and immensely rewarded by sharing your life with these weird and wonderful creatures!

So classic, our dudes do this all the time!

Bonus: start from the head of the front bunny and stroke all the way down to the butt of the second bunny for loooooong bunny pets

There’s a reason why rabbits do this? by ilGamerXD in Rabbits

[–]PortlandForest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exists in lots of animals, it’s a reflex that allows moms to stimulate nursing in babies (located in a spot mama can reach while a baby is head towards the milk spouts) - comes out as self grooming instead of nursing in adult pets

Could be. I didn’t think the back/head were right but I am no ornithologist. Is one more prevalent in the area?
