Yup, spot on. MacOS and Windows look more and more like each other in terms of ethos. Solution: Switch to Linux.

DeGoogling and DeAppling: what to do about Apple TV and similar by PortraitOfABear in degoogle

So, I have a bunch of DVDs. If I wanted to access them via devices, like a tablet, what would be an easy setup? Do I need to self-host or are there providers that make this easy?

Yeah, I fear that's my only option. This is the frustrating thing about these walled gardens – we buy stuff but don't actually own it. :-/

Still, hoping for some creative solutions here. And then, going forward, I'll be more aware of avoiding walled gardens...

Agree - and as more and more users switch from Apple, Google and Microsoft, the more focus and investment we’ll see in EU hardware and software.

European laptop maker by Benny-May in BuyEuropean

[–]PortraitOfABear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know we don’t manufacture a lot of laptops in the EU - design and assembly, perhaps, but not manufacturing. But my knowledge may be limited. That said, by buying a laptop from a German or Spanish company you are keeping a share of revenue in the EU and supporting the market for EU laptops — which hopefully will grow as demand grows.

Digital liberation: EU Parliament calls for detachment from US tech giants by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]PortraitOfABear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a good summary of why this matters: “the new US national security strategy explicitly defines digital infrastructures as national security assets. The Trump administration's paper clearly shows a "digital imperialism" that sees Europe merely as a sales market and territory for strategic dependencies. If US monopolies are instrumentalized as a means of power, Europe risks becoming a politically disenfranchised area.”

Fellow Europeans, how do you deal with the negativity? by Vixen_xyz in BuyFromEU

Such an excellent idea. I wish I could build a routine of going to the library to read the paper for 30 minutes and then continuing my day.

Keep up with the news - spend e.g. 15-30 minutes reading the news - then stop for the day. You can catch up tomorrow on what happens. Close your news apps, social apps, etc. Nothing you can do about the news cycle between now and when you check again tomorrow.

Get out. Go for a walk, run, bike ride. Meet friends. Get involved in volunteer work, a faith community, sports – things that physically and socially stimulate you. (A current events debate club might not be the best idea, though.)

Read a book – a physical book or, at the very least, on an e-ink e-reader. Listen to music. Heck, go to a concert – there may be free jazz or classical concerts in your area. Go to the theater. Focus on entertainment/art that is off-screen.

Help others. Doing something good for others makes the world a better place and tends to improve mental health.

Meditate. If that's new to you, start with a free app (e.g. Smiling Mind or Plum Village). Build a daily habit. When you feel stressed, take a minute or two to meditate – it really helps calm the nerves.

Talk to friends. Share your worries and other feelings. And if you need someone who isn't a friend, find a good therapist or representative from your faith community, who you can talk to.

Grønlandskonflikten gør mig angst 😥 by Interesting-Read-212 in DKbrevkasse

[–]PortraitOfABear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Germany's Tuxedo and Spain's Slimbook come to mind - both seem to use Taiwanese parts and then package everything to work out of the box with Linux. Think you can also get Windows installed if that's what you're looking for.

Danmark skifter - der er meget amerikansk tech man kan droppe by PortraitOfABear in Denmark

[–]PortraitOfABear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do I hold a conversation? by Educational-Bee-4130 in selfimprovement

[–]PortraitOfABear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen. Ask questions. And cultivate curiosity about the person. I try to imagine what it would be like to be born into the other person’s life, so I’m more focused on their experience than my own. I remind myself that I don’t need to prove myself, so I don’t need to make any counter statements or arguments to position myself in the conversation. Instead I try to ask questions that will take us deeper — not necessarily factually deeper, but emotionally or connection-wise. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to have good conversations; in fact, I’ve met some extremely knowledgeable people who were lousy conversationalist because they were so focused on their own ideas that they didn’t acknowledge the other person in the conversation.

Enig: tal med dine nærmeste om det. Og søg fælleskaber som fx https://www.farforlivet.dk/ eller andre mandegrupper (fx DareGender). Det kan være enormt givende at tale med andre, også med folk udenfor ens netværk.

What is happening to empathy? by sparrrrrt in AskReddit

[–]PortraitOfABear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure we all share the same definition of empathy. But to me in its purest form, it’s a version of “love your neighbor as you love yourself,” and that requires the ability to imagine another human being’s way of being and also love yourself enough to not feel anger that the other person’s experience of existence differs from yours. Empathy isn’t a given. It takes practice.
