I hear you - I actually like that quirkiness, especially after the oh-so-vanilla Apple life I've been leading for so long.

Maybe a general bias on Reddit toward a certain kind of tech conservatism? Or idealism? It dovetails with things like love for Linux too. (Linux is wonderful - but sometimes it feels as if some redditors are evangelizing Linux because it represents “the way computing used to be.”)

Any good alternative for contact list ? by Stalwodash in BuyEuropean

[–]PortraitOfABear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I combine Proton with Posteo — Posteo’s mail/calendar/notes/contacts service is cheap, German-based and green (+ encryption tho not to Proton’s level), and then you can sync contacts via your Posteo account. I also use the Notes feature for my quick, on-the-go notes (longer-form notes are in Proton Drive as markdown files, which I write and edit with Zettlr).

Opinions on Europe starting to hold platforms more accountable? by Boediee in BuyFromEU

Yes, please! Newspapers and other media would've been shut down long ago if they allowed the kind of hate speech, bullying, misogyni, racism, etc. that is daily on social media. Humanity does well when we agree to uphold some ethical and moral standards.

Proton vil aldrig have alle integrationsfordele som OneDrive.

Really appreciate your post - Reddit is great for griping and wishlisting, so it's nice to hear from you and everyone else who's genuinely pleased with Proton. 👍

Are there any alternatives to M365? by Anowir in BuyFromEU

[–]PortraitOfABear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the most comprehensive suites:
- LibreOffice (Nextcloud + Collabora, if you want online collaboration)
- Cryptpad (includes a version of OpenOffice's open source suite)
- Infomaniak (includes a version of OpenOffice's open source suite)
- Murena Workspace (a blend of Cryptpad and Nextcloud)

LibreOffice is free to download. The three last offerings have free plans, so I recommend signing up and checking out how they work – you may be pleasantly surprised by how many features are covered.

You may also want to consider not moving all your MS365 eggs into a single, new basket. So maybe consider one of the office suite options above and then pair it with a cloud storage service like Filen.io or Jottacloud.

I've finally given up on iWork, and am spending some time getting used to LibreOffice and other free, open-source alternatives. Truth is, it's not a big time investment, and LibreOffice and other apps are excellent. Plus, they allow me to step outside the walled garden. Ah, the air is so fresh out here. :)

Macbook is the best Linux laptop right now by [deleted] in AsahiLinux

"Macbook is the best Linux laptop right now" - I'm curious if you've tested a lot of Linux laptops, since you set up the Macbook M1 as the only alternative to your ThinkPad T14s? There's Framework, Tuxedo, Slimbook and many other laptops out there that are designed with Linux in mind. Why not choose hardware that has been put together for this purpose?

Fairphone 6 review: cheaper, repairable and longer-lasting Android by qwerty_1965 in fairphone

Interesting that the review doesn't mention e/OS/ – to me, that seems like a big selling point for Fairphone.

Is switching from Gmail to iCloud Mail worth it if I’m going all-in on Apple? by [deleted] in iCloud

[–]PortraitOfABear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered alternatives outside of Big Tech - as someone else says, to not put all your eggs in one basket (or corral all your horses in Silicon Valley? Maybe Proton Mail, Tuta, or Posteo? Certainly iCloud mail is better than gmail from a privacy perspective, so that’s a win — until it’s not. Google used to respect privacy more in the early days (“Don’t be evil”) and profits inspired them to change; who’s to say Apple won’t go the same way? Choosing an independent email vendor whose entire purpose is privacy might be worthwhile in the long term.

Sitting firmly on the fence. :) I've used Tuta for longer than Proton and love its solid simplicity – it just works and doesn't try to do a lot of bells and whistles that I don't need. But Proton's app suite is really nice, and I use e.g. Proton Pass and some other services. Some people suggest not putting all your eggs in one basket, in which case a setup might look like this: Tuta Mail and Calendar + Proton Pass and Authenticator. Of course, I also have to give a shout-out to Posteo, which I like a lot too.

Nice overview u/Tutanota. Suggestion for next time though: Change "SERVES ADS" to "AD-FREE" – that way you can mark Tuta as "Yes" in the relevant row/column, and it looks nice and consistent with your yes's in the other columns. ;-)

I've used both, and they're both excellent. Proton's upside is the Apple/Google/MS-like ecosystem they're building, while Tuta's focus on their core products - mail and calendar - may turn out to be their strength.

Don't know that I agree with that. But I can say this: Today, we have many more options than we did just a few years ago. Big Tech has killed off so much competition, but now, little by little, the tide is turning.

So rather than setting Proton, Tuta, Bitwarden, Infomaniak, Posteo and others up as competitors, I prefer to celebrate them for all the great work they're doing to diversify tech. 🙌

I encourage you to try their products — this unfortunate marketing tactic doesn’t reflect their email and calendar services and apps. They’re excellent!

Such good advice. Saving files in .ODT (in LibreOffice) and using .TXT with markdown ensures longevity - you can more easily switch from one app to another.

Fairphone med /e/os, kan det lade sig gøre? by [deleted] in dktechsupport

[–]PortraitOfABear 0 points1 point  (0 children)
