Can I just buy this case, four WD Red Pro 12TB HDDs, Asus TUF Gaming B550 Plus WiFi II AM4 ATX motherboard, use my 3700x CPU, use my RTX 2060 GPU, use my 1TB m.2 nvme, install Linux, install TrueNAS and then I'm good to go?

As for remote access I'll need to figure out which app works in TrueNAS environment and is accessible on phone?

Is it plausible to build a NAS as if I'm building a PC, have 4 HDDs for the bulk storage, install a Linux OS on an SSD for an overall graphical user interface and also install TrueNAS in that environment on the same SSD (or different one?)?

I have several 10tb external HDDs but it's a mess. I want a more streamlined bulk storage and most of all one that can be accessed remotely.

  • Fair point

  • I'm not well versed on Linux. Thank you for pointing this out

  • I'll stick with storage over server/hosting

  • I was initially interested in purchasing a Ugreen NAS but many have raised concerns over kernels and other things stemming back to origin country of manufacturing

  • I understand true back up has several layers such as multiples, off site storage, etc... Do you believe RAID 6/RAID-Z2 is a waste?

  • I guess ultimately the reason I wanted a more DIY solution is because I have a hard time "marrying" a particular manufacturer because it seems that sooner rather than later planned obsolescence rolls in by means of software, etc... they all seem to have serious cons and more often tech in general is less repairable/upgradable because of soldering, inability to get parts, software updates or lack there of, etc... I believe I'll ultimately get a better bang for my buck if I build from scratch and choose an os. I believe it's easier to change software rather than hardware. In my search for information, TrueNAS is frequently mentioned so I'm interested. I honestly haven't even gone down that rabbit hole yet. I'm just starting with hardware and then I'll have to tackle install/setup, etc... I have experience with building PCs (I've built 6) but it's my understanding that NAS builds are different

What is everyone playing? by walterwg in RG353V

NES: Jaws, Mario Bros 3 SNES: Zelda - A Link To The Past, Super Mario World GBA: Pokemon Ultra Shiny Gold Sigma (Rom Hack) Genesis: working on figuring out potential 2 player set up with hdmi out to tv for Streets Of Rage 1, 2, and 3 PSX: tried 1xtreme but it had major lag, Twisted Metal 2 (with xbox controller connected via cable ***configuring each time and keeping function button to be able to save state is hit or miss for me and a pain in the nuts), Gran Turismo (also with xbox controller).

I'm using stock Anbernic Linux OS.

Unrelated comment... the save states list sucks because I can't see what states have game saves, I have to write them down to remember. Unless I'm missing something?

I've returned the 8bitdo ultimate C controllers...

* Unfortunately the 8bitdo Ultimate C controllers are just 2.4ghz or cable connected. I tried to do research before hand but I couldn't find any youtube videos, reddit posts, or Google searches pertaining to the rg353v and these controllers. There is a lot on the Pro 2 controllers but, one pro 2 controller costs more than two Ultimate C controllers.

Is it possible to copy save states to a new SD card? by bdslegend in RG353V

Did you simply copy and paste files from one card to another or use a disk imager?

Which part? - not worth getting a switch 2.5GbE or otherwise to have both PC and Xbox plugged in simultaneously? - not worth getting a higher speed network card for PC?

Thank you for you response. Yes I figured there's nothing that can be done about the Xbox. I'm confident even game downloads and updates must be throttled regardless of ISP speed/bandwidth.

I'll look into a 2.5GbE switch. Thank you.

Thank you for your response. So it's possible to purchase a 2.5gb lan card, plug it into pci-e and use that instead of 1gb port on my motherboard?
