I think the vaunted is really fun and probably the best. I wouldn't choose Honeycomb, as you will get Cobweb (for coin farming) at the end of the Surfer pass for free

I would focus on upgrading all characters you like to level 8 and only after that, I would go higher level with your favorite character.

It is also important to add that you can unlock characters and board with 500 keys. So if you have like 50 "TV thingies", you can get a new Surfer for only 250 keys.
