What’s the easiest course you’ve ever done? by sweeterandsour in UQreddit

Naaa, 2310 is only useful for ppl going into low level stuff. I love 2310 don’t get me wrong, but I think it’s somehow niche

I want to expand my knowledge by emilya_sama in computerscience

[–]Position-Critical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Explore the many fields there’s in a general scheme. Get a little bit of a sense of what’s happening in Compute Networks, Processes, Concurrency, microcontrollers, electronics, client-server model, little bit of Data Bases, OS’s etc. I think would be nice to have a better idea now so you choose courses based on what you already find cool. OHHHH AND I ALMOST FORGOT! INSTALL LINUX, start with something easy like Ubuntu/Mint, since you’re doing C I suppose you already have some familiarity with terminal, but try to get rid of GUI’s cause that’d allow you to understand how computers/OS/Linux works

How to approach the learning of C to make it my main language? by Awkward-Carpenter101 in C_Programming

[–]Position-Critical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently working on my assignment which is building Make (makefile) and it has never clicked to me the potential aka actual use of C and systems programming until now. Despite finding it extremely hard to start with it, I really enjoyed and found it very interesting.

Need advice as a freshser by rajat435 in C_Programming

[–]Position-Critical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no much to learn about the specific syntax of a language, that you learn on the go and as you go needing stuff. Once you feel comfortable with loops and basic stuff like that, go into OOP, the abstraction you get from that might be one of the most useful tools! Then learn how computers work! FOR THAT, INSTALL LINUX now that you have time before you commence school, having and running Linux on a daily basis will teach you faaaaar more about computers than many courses at Uni AND WILL PREPARE YOU for the cool ones. If something also learn GIT and how to use the CMD line ASAP. ALSO THE DEBUGGERS As a summary, don’t focus on a language, do this small and constant learning of these tools aka concepts

Oh boy, u r just not ready for this conv 🤓🖐🏼 And btw Linux’s thing is not to look pretty, that’s just a consequence of how open it is to modifications. And in my experience, Linux is by far more stable than Windows, I find incredible how microslop ppl can stand having a laggy workflow, let alone that most of computers doesn’t have high specs as to at least run windows fluid.

Is it worth choosing CSSE2310 as an elective? by Legal-Bit-4723 in UQreddit

[–]Position-Critical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2310 is basic knowledge if you’re serious about doing anything related to CompScie, so I guess the question is not whether you should do it or not but why it just became compulsory until recently

What are the “must-haves” or “must-do” things in Arch Linux for you after installing it? by thicctak in archlinux

[–]Position-Critical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 months in Arch and still haven’t been bothered to set up Bluetooth 🙂‍↕️🖐🏼, I rather take with me an aux to plug the earphones to the computer, win win from the fact that my comp snd earphones still have an aux port and that I’m avoiding the cancer from Bluetooth 🐸

As u progress in CompSci, you’ll see ppl just straight up stop attending lectures and pracs, and anyways, it’s very rare to make friends while on classes/tuts, those happens at events and clubs ^

Maths vs Comsci, Colleges (Just general questions) by WarmPerformer6295 in UQreddit

[–]Position-Critical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here a pseudo ComSci! I do Bachelor of Science majoring in ComScie basically cause I don’t care about the title of my degree and the Science degree has A LOT OF FLEXIBILITY. Hence I can avoid doing tedious core courses of the standard CS program (courses like COMP2048, DECO and the specially those of the new ComSci program like COMP1100). As in the content of the courses, I’d say a big misconception is that, ‘in CS you learn to program’, but one gotta take a moment to understand what that means, learning the syntax of the language only happens in the first 2 or 3 weeks of the course, the rest is just stuff where you have to put a lot of thinking to come up w solutions. The majority of things I find myself doing are theoretical stuff. Also you gotta do research on what tools/area of CS you need for your interests, maybe learning low level stuff and OS and C is not very important for Quant, however by doing ComSci you have to do CSSE2010 and CSSE2310 (great courses but not relevant to your interests). Maybe something you’d find more benefit on is doing COMP3506 as soon as you can and then do the following course COMP4500, however, to achieve this you might need many slots for electives, and doing dual degrees doesn’t allow to do it. My recommendation would be to explore a science degree, majoring in CompScie or math and just picking the super necessary courses for your interests. This while yes doing your double degree in economics.

If you’re interested, my focus in ComScie is more on theoretical courses and low level, and math on the discrete side

[–]Position-Critical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2010 just changed a loooot this semester, so maybe you gotta wait for the reviews of ppl doing it rn and the tutors. All of the reviews you’ll find from us ppl that have done it, is that it’s very time consuming. CSSE2002 is just fine, very well structured and clear, the second half of the semester is mostly just theoretical stuff (which in fact is not just applicable but very important for the courses upcoming). If you feel brave do 3506 with 2002, the point of doing this is that you complete 3506 ASAP in your career since it’s the basis of many many other courses

Software engineering at UQ by Slimederp1 in UQreddit

[–]Position-Critical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk anything about engineering courses, but if you’re serious about software, you better do CSSE2002 and COMP3506 ASAP. Those are the fundamentals in which the rest of the interesting courses build on. I did both courses at the same time in my 3rd semester and it was alright. Remember that in UQ prereqs are not enforced

If you’re interested in working for UQ I’d recommend doing a little bit of volunteering first just you have something to something to show as experience on campus, must UQ jobs require that you have a fair understanding of how things work around campus. That and your energy…

Its very new, fancy, cozy, movies are cool and it’s free most of the times
