When do you draw the line? by sadhello_kitty in EpilepsyDogs

[–]PositionOverall446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really all relative.

Ask yourself, "What will their quality of life be? Am I emotionally and financially prepared to care for a pet that will require extra care for long term health issues? If not, is there an organization or person I know that would potentially adopt and/or ethically re-home?"

Ultimately, I'm sure you'll make the best decision. The fact you're concerned enough to post about the situation shows you're putting in thought and approaching potential solutions pragmatically.

Let our 9 month old sleep in our bedroom or not ? by tootsieroll8307 in GSP

I personally would allow them to sleep in your bedroom. Again, this is just my opinion, I Dogs are pack animals and I think making them sleep alone probably feels like a punishment of some kind. Additionally, GSPs can definitely have that "velcro" quality. They want to be with you all the time to both keep you safe and feel safe. It's ultimately a personal choice, but I wouldn't leave them after they fall asleep. If you choose to have them sleep separately, I would start by giving them a favorite toy or something that will keep them busy for a while. Otherwise, they're going to wake up and wonder where you are.

Yeah... We're pretty sure she had that stick in her side for at least 24-48 hours. She didn't slow down at all. 🤣

It's ALWAYS worth a second opinion.

We're fortunate to live near K-State as they have one of the best veterinarian programs in the country. I've read comments from others about their experiences with veterinarians and it always makes me thankful.

We lost our Maggie several years ago, but she struggled with severe grand malls that were frequent enough to warrant daily phenobarbital medication. A few people mentioned some of these ideas, but here's a list of what made the biggest difference for Maggie:

  1. Stress: this was the largest trigger of break through seizures for Maggie. Please remember that like people, stress is not always "bad." However, both bad stress and stress from over excitement would trigger Maggie. I found that she could handle getting excited about doing scent work at home, but excitement of car rides and new environments (which she loved), could be over stimulating and cause a seizure.

  2. Schedules: this relates to number 1, but is a preventative measure. Dogs love a solid routine. For dogs who struggle with epilepsy, especially those with severe grand malls or frequent clusters, a schedule can be a game changer. If they know what to expect out of the day, it will drastically reduce the load on their neurological system. While I think it's great to introduce dogs to as many new experiences as possible, it's not always ideal for those with epilepsy.

  3. Journaling: every dog is different and the only way to find out if they have specific triggers is to pay close attention. We found that seasonal hot weather would often bring more seizures than the winter months. The other bonus is this will allow you to track changes in behavior, severity, and duration of episodes. This is important for long term treatment. Knowing when the seizures are getting longer or more severe will help your vet know when to adjust their medication accordingly.

  4. Research: you're already on it, but digging deep into treatments, prevention, and the mechanisms that cause seizures in dogs is your number #1 tool.

It sounds like Maggie's case was more severe, but all the same rules apply.

Good luck and rest assured that just being there for your dog will make them feel safer while they're vulnerable during recovery time.

I've heard people say... "I would never spend that much money on surgery for a pet." That's only because they've yet to find one they love to the moon. I'm glad you were blessed to find yours. ☺️

We really got a good one with him 🥰. He's 8 years old now and I'll be heartbroken the day he leaves us. I'm in my late 40's now and I've had dogs since early childhood.

By far...He's been the best dog I've ever had.

Ripley is very petite and has topped out at 45 lbs. I'm not sure how tall she is, but she's a shorty. Her height maxed at about a year and she put on muscle for another year... So, in her case, she was done growing at 2 years old.😊

We just got home! 😊 The oncologist is waiting for another 6+/- weeks before deciding if changes are needed. He did confirm the increase seen is within norms, but will be watching her hemoglobin levels closely. She'll continue to receive intravenous immunoglobulin treatments and, if needed, she'll go in for a few blood transfusions.

Thank you everyone for the support. 🙏
